ASD and ADHD were actually showed in many studies to have significantly high comorbidity rate, that is 50-70% of people with ASD also have ADHD and vice versa. ASD is more about the inability to shift attention when neccessary, rather than focusing on 1 thing. So a person can have a short attention span, but also hyperfocus on irrelevant details and be unable to change their attention to appropriate ones. Therefore these 2 characteristics are not mutually exclusive. Furthermore, the diagnosis for ASD and ADHD can be based on other factors besides attention as well.
