The format for this video is a bit different than the typical animations on this channel. I'd love to hear what you think of this style of presentation. The full interview with Dr. Shanna Swan was 1.5 hours and I edited her answers down to the concise core of her message. But to get the full picture of what's going on, I highly recommend her book, "Count Down". Dr. Swan was a joy to work with and I am so grateful we have kind, dedicated, courageous minds like her in higher academia.
The subject matter in this video is extremely important for the future of humanity. We're currently being sterilized. Please share this around if you can and if you enjoyed this presentation and want to help create more, please consider supporting After Skool on Patreon. Thank you! www.patreon.com/AfterSkool

Look up sleep hygiene and adaptogens. Easy way to help manage stress. Transcendental meditation is good too. Don't pay anyone for it, it's super easy. Don't need any custom mantra or anything. Just pick any word and repeat. Can even not do that and stare into the flickering of a candle flame or something. Lotta methods to help get you started, eventually you can just do it at will. It's really useful and even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference.

Exactly, this may be called the plastic civilization in the history, if we could survive. It is all of our lives, every production is like plastic. Seems rigid but when we stand on it it shrinks or breaks apart. Simply everything rises sharply but they have a really short life time, from celebs to political aggreements. Many crumble into pieces in a short amount of time. I hope we can recover from this point.

Thank God I got pregnant two weeks later and so far the baby is healthy, but everywhere I look younger women are having miscarriages and trouble conceiving, whereas my great-grandmother had 11 children. This is very real.

There're also societal differences to consider with what you've said. Society was vastly different socio-economically speaking back when our grandparents were born. I'm 25, and my four grandparents were born between 1918 and 1932. Back then, tons of people still lived rurally working lives of agricultural subsistence, contraception was not nearly as widely available, and the western economy was vastly different. Women were not expected to work (and this remained the same until the 70s basically) and were instead expected societally to be homemakers while the husband was the breadwinner. Not only was the workforce different, but each of those men who won the bread for families with numerous children had a job which could pay for that, a house, a car, etc. Like I said, vastly different society and economy. Biological fertility is not the only factor as to why people used to have like 10 ten kids.

This is nonsense, they simply didn’t talk about it as much back then. My wife and I just had a stillbirth at 20 weeks and when she opened up about it, her aunt, and her grandma told her about miscarriages they both had that they never told anyone about and my mom told me that my grandma had a stillbirth as well. All of those people went on to have many more children. It’s not that it is happening more, it’s just talked about more because it was a societal norm to keep that a secret.

Takeaway for best actions to take as a mother to have a fertile, potent baby:
    - Do not smoke
    - Do not drink alcohol
    - Avoid stress
    - Do not consume products that came into contact with industrially processed materials/chemicals.
The only way you can check these boxes is to just move away to the country side and live like people lived in the old times when it comes to nutrition.

I mean, my whole life *will* be influenced by all the chemistry that is happening around me, and I do understand that I'll need to grow and breed my own food - but I didn't realized a bit how dangerous and urgent it was. I think the problems started a long time ago, when people started believing man-made stuff was superior to natural stuff. Baby formula is a good example. Advertising told us it was better than breast milk. And alot of people believed it and bought it...some (like my mom) were urged on by a doctor and hospital staff. Now we know the benefits of breast milk, and we say, "duh, it's natural". But people back then who trusted advertising and the science they spouted bought the baby formula! Some people still believe it's better.
I also remember when alot of groceries came in glass containers. Then in the early 80s plastic began to take over. Now we have all kinds of problems from it. Maybe if we had known about bpa and other chemicals back then we would have chosen to buy stuff in glass, then plastic wouldn't have survived as a container because they wouldn't have sold their products.
But the problem isn't plastic, or science. It's arrogance, greed, and whatever it is that makes one person not care about the next. What we need is a solution to the evil in mankind. But in 10k+ years of civilization we haven't been able to fix it. Why? What would that solution be? Love. If we all loved one another, we would share everything and not want to hurt each other, there would be no need for money or greed. Jesus Christ said that's what we should do. Can you imagine a world like that? Where there was no money, no hate, no crime, no fear, no greed, no hunger, no rejection? It would be awesome.

Boy am I glad my mother was an anti- plastic advocate. We recycled everything by 1971, and chemicals were few and far between in our house. As a child I had chemistry sets, microscopes and telescopes. Everything had to be examined by my brother before I could handle it. So, I am fine, and so are my brothers and sisters. I still worry, that at some point, the plastic will be so prolific in our environment that it will be hard to avoid, even for the most cautious parents. We need to change our ways before our ways change us!!!

So do you limit your consumption of products with plastic in particular? I heard that the ‘recycling’ symbol on most plastic is an outdated piece of misinformation from the industrial era after finding out that most plastic can’t actually be recycled. Apparently less than 10% of global plastic is recycled.
I’m quite interested in your mother being an anti-plastic advocate. For not just simply throwing plastic into one bin, rubbish the second, but for actually caring about the impact it has beyond our homes.
Not to sound like I’m carrying out an interrogation… but have you any strong views on sustainability and how we, as a community could promote sustainable packaging for products in particular? I’d love to hear your input and perhaps mention your outlook in my technology project on sustainable packaging. It would be nice to include some different ideas and outlooks on the matter!

I try not to use plastic bags or anything plastic in the way of packaging, I try to use paper cardboard, foil, or just hold the product in my hand. I do not throw away food with trash. I separate the two, so food can be put out for fertilizer, mulch, or taken by waste management!!! (I have septic, so, no sewage, and I put a lot of food scraps down the drain.) And the paper, boxes, etc. can stay until there is enough to haul off to the county landfill. I compact everything. In the last 15 months, I threw out 8/39 gallon trash bags worth of trash. That includes, trash, moving boxes and related trash, food garbage, bottles, and car trash!!! The idea is not so much too recycle, but, not to use so much packaging in the first place!!! Start a garden and can your own foods. My grandparents lived in town and had a small backyard. They filled that backyard with asparagus, raspberries, tomatoes, beans, lettuce, spinach etc and they also canned enough food that lasted them through winter. They also bought grass fed beef and had a pig that ate table scraps. They ate healthy and were fit with no ailments. They had glass insert thermos for their water and would fill it every day when working outside. I now have that same garden and can or freeze the excess vegetables. I make my own spaghetti sauce with shredded carrots to replace the sugar and it tastes awesome. We need to stop eating processed foods and drinking bottled water or having coffee from a Keurig.

The middle group has been too stupid not to invest in their pension. Indeed, on an individual basis it's very reasonable to plan children, because having to neglect children isn't good for their future. However, when you look at the society in general, it's actually a good thing people keep getting children, even if they can't afford them individually. If the people that can afford many children don't (unlike Elon Musk) while the poor people can't due to financial shortage, then the middle class has fix it, which they can't insufficiently. This video is so important and eye opening. We constantly surround ourselves with nasty chemicals all because 1) businesses don't understand the chemistry of the products they are using most of the time, and when they do, they care more about profits than safety. 2) Governments also care more about money than about health as well. They don't want to be held accountable for allowing the use of these products/ using these products. Both business leaders and government leaders are afraid to look into things like this because it means more things to worry about, more accountability to be had.
All of these points are extremely valid and the literature tied to her points are all well-done, critical studies. Denying these pieces of information shows fear and ignorance. And at the very least, even if these issues aren't occurring, conversations should continue to be had, and investigations should continue to prove these chemicals don't affect us. It never hurts to better understand human biology, which we definitely don't fully understand yet. If you aren't worried about this, you aren't paying attention. Declining sperm count happened too dramatically, widespread, and too quickly to be due to genetic factors. It is most certainly environmental factors. And guess what, nature hasn't ever created a mass swath of chemicals that cause this -- only people.

I did a joint paper for a project on Phthalates (plasticizers) 2 years ago, and you would be surprised just how common, and harmful they are. None of the studies and research I based the paper on were my own. Now, we are looking at Atrazine, and actually doing tests and research on rats. Even at concentrations below federal standards, we see higher rates of developmental abnormalities in male and female reproductive tracts. Previous studies and research show many other harmful effects of atrazine, they are similar to the effects of Phthalates. Atrazine is a common herbicide, the US alone uses roughly 100 million pounds of it each year. It's water soluble (7mg/100ml) and easily finds its way into the water supply.

Out of all the plastics, as far as I know, Polyethylene and Silicone (sans plasticizers) are the only 100% truly non-toxic plastics... and even then, that's with the right synthesis pathways - some processes will leave residues of toxic manufactory co-factors into the finished product, while other are completely pure.
PETE and Polycarbonate are made OUT OF Phthalate (former) and USING BPA (latter) as a primary part of their synthesis pathway. No good. Irredeemable. (Unless chemists can make a pathway for polycarbonate that somehow avoids using BPA, or guarantees its 100% exclusion from the finished product.)
And don't even get me started on Plastic Textile Fabrics. I went of a big kick a few years ago of filling my wardrobe with everything "Synthetic". Big mistake. I'm rapidly replacing everything with natural fibers. More comfy, no static electricity, easier on the skin. No microplastics.
Plastic isn't the problem - cheap humans who 1) buy low-quality products, and 2) participate in the Industrial Race-To-The-Bottom are the problem.
We can produce and recycle / reclaim / dispose of anything we want... it's just a matter of intent and effort.

This is very interesting because i've always believed the chemicals they put in our food, the plastics we drink from and the lifestyle we live has been bad for us, but i didn't attribute it all to the declining reproduction rates. I was simply referring it to the massive increase in other issues like depression.

Sorry to burst your bubble of hope but microplastics have been found all the way in the poles, in areas where there has never been a human presence. When plastics break down, they just don't disappear, they become microplastics and the wind and water can carry those anywhere on the planet. There's even a study which found insane levels of microplastics inside newborns since we ingest and absorb them and then mothers pass those down to fetuses...

    • @minutemansam1214

Declining reproductive rates have more to do with increased access to contraceptives than an actual decrease in individual fertility. Not saying microplastics and the like cannot decrease this, but we still have countries with EXTREMELY high fertility and honestly greater risk of exposure to things like pesticides.
