I’m using Logic Pro since version 7. it’s like I never even used it really... i’m binge-watching your channel and have never found something so clear and useful!! THANK YOU!
I feel like I've said this before but sir you really are the best instructor there is on everything Logic, I'm learning something new and pleasantly surprising every time, thank you so so much!!!
Man, what a monster of a daw this is. Incredible! Every episode i keep getting blown away and I already thought I was an experienced user. This series is a must-follow course for anyone serious about working with Logic.
I'm convinced that I've seen a view that shows all the automation simultaneously in the Automation/midi window of the piano roll. Am I imagining things? Excellent tutorial as always.
Just want to give big thanks to you sir! I love the tutorials, your overall philosophy on making them and genuine sincerity in trying to help people get better and more efficiency in their creativity. If you haven’t already I’d love to hear your thoughts on the insert channel strip and where plug-ins should sit in the chain. I’d love to know your stance on sends vs insert for delays and reverbs etc as I often just see inserts of space designer etc than sends etc. Just ideas for you to mull over. Thanks so much, I have leveled up over lockdown thanks to your channel. 👍🏻
Absolutely fantastic, I have been waiting for some tuition on automation and 'boom' as always you come along and show how it's done, thank you, thank you, thank you so much, all made perfectly clear now.
Thank you Chris! This solved an issue that stumped me. I could see a thin vertical grey beam in the midi track which was triggering an expression parameter on a plugin when the playhead crossed it. It simply didn't show up anywhere in the midi track drop down parameters and because I couldn't find it I couldn't work out how to delete it until this gave me an insight. If anyone has the same issue: drop down the parameter lanes as Chris explains, then double click the midi track so it opens in the edit pane below, then (in my case) I could now see in the parameter lane under the midi track an active horizontal yellow line begin at the exact point of the vertical grey beam, which was labeled 'modulation' (confusingly instead of 'expression'), so now I could delete it. The thing is I couldn't find it anywhere in the track drop down menu. It was only by going into the midi edit window that this parameter even appeared. Thanks again Chris!!
I have been using logic (inefficiently, and sometimes just plain wrong, it turns out) since it became Apple-only. I know it mostly says pretty sad things about my life, but there are life-changers in every single one of these videos. Many thanks.
Thanks for this video. I'm new to Logic. I was trying to do multiple patch changes on an external synth and I couldn't figure out why newly added sections were reverting to first patch on the track. Now I see that it must have been a track automation that carried over to new regions that I was adding.
one thing you can do as well if you want to adjust the volume automation and preserve edits is to hit shift + control + H and create a folder stack. Then you can still adjust the track volume with a fader in the mixer.
Hey Chris, You are amazing, thanks for all your help on your channel. Could you please make a video on how to copy and past 'Region Automation' between tracks? This has eluded me for way too long. Big thanks from Chicago!!
Also big thanks from Chicago! And yes, PLEASE tell us there's a way to copy and paste automation. Or better yet, why can't we open two region automation lanes (let's say Volume and Pan) at the same time, select the automation in one of them, and then paste it into the other? Why, oh WHY can't we do this????????????? (and for good measure, more '?') ????????
You could try this: In Logic Pro, hold down Shift while dragging a selection within the automation area. Choose Edit > Copy (or use the corresponding key command). Select the track you want to copy the automation to. Choose Edit > Paste (or use the corresponding key command). 🤔
@@RokhartMusicThank you, but you really ought to try this yourself. You have definitely described the method anyone would try first. You can imagine our surprise and frustration upon discovering that this does not work. If you select an automation lane (example: Expression) in the Piano Roll, Copy, and then pull up a different automation lane on the same track (example: Moduation), and Paste, all this does is duplicate what you copied (Expression) to the same lane it's from (Expression). In other words, the selection of the lane is irrelevant-it's just going to copy it to the same lane it's for. Yes, this is the same for using Region automation in the Main window. In fact, there is where you can truly see that your suggested functionality doesn't work-if you have more than one lane open, you'll see you can only select the top one, and you can watch your Copy action do exactly what you don't want it to do.
Just spotted this, must av missed it some how as I follow the 30days each day? But wow! So well explained and really have to start using automation now! Thank you Chris
Excellent as always. I seem to recall Logic has an ability to show all automation at the same time in one window at the bottom of the screen. Is that right?
thanks, i noticed that when drawing midi automation in the piano roll (region automation), there is no marquee tool. Is there a way to make a shelf shaped automation without the marquee but without the need of clicking and making 4 automation dots?
Hi Chris, great video. I don't know if this happens to you too but say I have 4 lanes of automation for 4 different parameters of a synth. When I hit "A" to switch to automation view, I hit the "plus" sign to expand to show all 4 automation lanes of different parameters. But when I leave automation view and come back to it later, I see maybe only 3 lanes and have to hit the "plus" again to see all 4 lanes. Sometimes, I do see 4 lanes but 2 of the lanes are repeats/clones of the same parameter. Has this happened to you and any idea how to work around this? Thanks again for all these nuanced tips!
Hi! thanks for this video! I really want to know if is there any form to maintain this disclosure triangle configuration active always? (9:30) When I deselect the automation window and reopen it, I must press the triangle again :(
Is there a way to automate switching between live instruments? Like if I want to record a live set and switch between guitar and keyboard, can I automate the live track switching?
This is very helpful but I’m not able to select a line between two nodes and drag that section up or down to create a trough or it’s inverse. I’ve tried various key+click combos but I can’t figure it out. Help!
I really hoped to see you breakdown EQ automation. When I automate my EQ low pass filter, I hear this annoying pop within my track and for the life of me I cant figure out a way to get rid of it.
Because of the maths involved, SOME Eq's will have clicks & pops when changing parameters. But Logic's Eq has always been good for me. I've done very smooth frequency sweeps with it, and it sounds great. Are you using the regular channel Eq or the linear phase one? Linear phase might not sweep as smoothly.
...I have a song with 8 string instruments and I have been clicking and dragging each track oh so carefully the Dozens of nodes for each track... now I know trim exists.... *stars drinking heavily* lol jk *drinks lightly*
I can’t believe it! How many of these useful things are you going to show us that I had no idea about. Logic Pro is a kaiju, a monster of a DAW...
Great tutorial. And he didn't even show the "curve automation tool" where you can draw curves (as opposed to free-form pencil drawing)
That trim function is a new discovery for me. The times I’ve selected all automation and then adjusted. Many thanks for a great series.
This man needs a tip jar. Honestly.
Or an Onlyfans (;
I was looking for the trim option! Thanks man!!

Used automation many times, but you always find a way to give me "that thing" I didn't know, cheers.
" I hope this was useful for you" It was. As usual. Thanks.
Always.
I knew most of this stuff, but the stuff I didn’t know was SO HELPFUL! Thanks for another great video!
I know everyone says this, but I had no idea I could do some of this stuff (parallel auto lanes, region-based auto). Thank you!
Oooooh my gosh! I just learned two HUGE things from this video, thank you so much!! I've wondered about trim function for YEARS!!!!
I'm convinced that I've seen a view that shows all the automation simultaneously in the Automation/midi window of the piano roll. Am I imagining things? Excellent tutorial as always.
This channel should have at least a million subscribers 😍😍 I love your videos .. you are awesome thank you
25 years on Logic and still feel like a novice sometimes. Thanks for these videos. Never knew about autoselect in automation. Very useful.
I love that I have more professional clients using logic then pro tools now days.
Oh my goodness this was sooo helpful!! You're one of my absolute favorites for figuring out Logic's amazing features!

Thanks for that. I’ve used automation many times but learned a lot of features I didn’t know about here.

Best Logic Tutorials in the world!!
Thank you! I can't believe I never searched for this earlier in my Mixing Years ? :) Thx You, George ( Had to learn the LONG WAY/ HARD WAY ) :)

These videos are superb Chris. Thank you for freely sharing your knowledge, it is really helping in my journey with Logic ProX.
these videos are an absolute godsend
Absolutely brilliant tutorial, mate..
Thank you..

@@drauncj Sorry I only copy and paste one track or region and one function each time.
That Like/Dislike ratio speaks for itself. So crazy! Thanks for the knowledge 🙏🏽
Thank you. But can you add some info on copy and pasting automation between lanes /tracks?
Love Logic, but this is the least intuitive function in the whole program.
Just spotted this, must av missed it some how as I follow the 30days each day? But wow! So well explained and really have to start using automation now! Thank you Chris
This was 700 kinds of helpful. Thank you!
Excellent as always. I seem to recall Logic has an ability to show all automation at the same time in one window at the bottom of the screen. Is that right?
Thanks! This is exactly what I needed. Have you done a bit on tempo automation for getting more realistic performances? That would be helpful.
Chris these are so helpful, thank you! You should have a pay button on here so we can buy you a beer!
Wow. Did not know most of this. Thanks!
Ha ha ha 🤣🤣🤣 holy crap, I love Logic’s automation and have been using it for years... never seen ‘Trim’ before 🙃 whoopsie
same here dude!
I've been using the gain plugin, like a clown!
elimooremusic 🤡 yup, got some pretty big shoes over here too! Gain plugin 🤡
Incredibly helpful! Thank you!
No response needed now. You can only do that with marquee-selected instances. Thanks again.
Absolutely incredible. Logic and your videos both

Excellent series, thank you!
Thanks a lot. This was super helpful!
the trim mode doesn't work on my track volume automation like you... I'm using Logic 10.4.2
Hi! thanks for this video! I really want to know if is there any form to maintain this disclosure triangle configuration active always? (9:30)
When I deselect the automation window and reopen it, I must press the triangle again :(
Great Video / Tutorial - thanks
Great explanation!
Can you group tracks to automate or do you have to do them separately 😢
Great reminder, a superb vid
Hey Chris, how do region & track automation compare to CPU load? Any more demanding than the other? Thanks!
Is there a way to automate switching between live instruments? Like if I want to record a live set and switch between guitar and keyboard, can I automate the live track switching?
Thanks for the great video!! I wish logic has automation just like ableton 10 tho

I LOVE LOGIC, but FL Studio have beter features for Aotomation.
Yeah. But Logic has a better stock piano than FL
