    I appreciate you not only talked the price point, how it felt to work with it, but the experience FROGGING said yarn. It was validating because I had yarn where it was IMPOSSIBLE to frog and I thought I had did something wrong. No other video I have seen so far ever talks about it, so I just assumed I did something wrong!

    • @dave6794
      @dave6794 Год назад +3

      yepp, i agree. there are more videos out here about the topic, tl yarn crafts test the frogging too for example when reviewing yarn, but it should be done more to help people like you that think its your faul. many people start to get frustrated and quit the entire hobby, wich is sad. its always a yarn issue, not ours when it comes to frogging. that also doesnt always mean that you have bad yarn, its quite normal for specific fibers(like super fluffy mohair-hard to frog no matter what) or many tweed yarns. yarn can be sooo different and there are so many pros and cons for every material, but most channels talk more about patterns and color schemes. im glad that we have people like her that educate us and let us realize that sometimes its just the yarn and not what we are doing :)

    • @ecouturehandmades5166

      I had some super fluffy yarn that became a hat bc a problem arose and there was no frogging to be done (it was just STUCK!).
      Kept going and turned it into a hat. The person that bought it loved it, but I thought/knew "it's gone,🎉 not my problem, and not going to buy more of that crap again!"
      I want a video on yarn barf, ie massive snarls inside yarn skeins. Try so hard to do center pulls on big company yarn and get barf 7 out of 10. Time waster!
      And I get gifted yarn that has become a problem for original buyer, lucky me 🙃😭

    I actually have an opinion on this subject as a former knitting yarn snob who’s life was completely changed 8 and a half years ago. As a knitter, I went to yarn shows, had a knitting group that met in my house every week, and I brought in different “yarn related entertainment” every other month. Sometimes it was a person who sold specialty yarns, whether they owned/ran an alpaca farm, or traveled around the world to bring exclusive yarns to us; to dyers and carders and spinners to teach us how to create yarn and make the colors of our choice.
    Now, knitting stitches are very different from crochet stitches, and uses less yarn, so I always wanted to knit with those expensive yarns to make them last and go as far as possible. Depending on the fiber content, they could be as soft as a cloud and feel like a whisper on your skin while looking delicate and beautiful. The gorgeous creations I made were either kept by me, or generously gifted to others who would appreciate the time and cost I had put into the project.
    Once I decided to try selling my makes, I knew that I needed to find yarn that was beautiful, but much less expensive. I also was learning to crochet and looked for larger skeins to accommodate the amount of yarn that crochet stitches take.
    Today, I feel like I have a much better handle on the value of yarn, no matter what it costs. I've been thrilled to see yarn companies create yarns from different fibers, whether mixed together or by themselves, resulting in soft, wearable items that can feel luxurious on the skin, but not break the bank. Yarns such as the kind you found in the Dollar Store, make wonderful house decor, such as flowers to fill a vase, or adorable Amigurumi to decorate a mantel, or desk. The softer yarns make great wearables, as well as blankets and pillows.
    Today's yarns are in such varieties, that you can find fabulous yarns for reasonable prices. Gone are the days where the more expensive, meant better. That being said, as you showed us in this video, if you want to stand out and have one of a kind yarns that are rare and hard to find, you will have to pay for it, but that doesn't make it any “better” then other yarns, just more exclusive.
    Another thing I took from this video, is that if you are talented in your craft, whether it's knitting or crocheting, you can make beautiful pieces with any yarn, no matter what the cost.
    Thank you for sharing this video and giving me a lot to think about, as well as the opportunity to express my observations and opinions! 💜🧶

      @@CrochetWithTiffany I loved it. That's one of the things that I miss the most about my “before becoming disabled life.” I actually have been hosting a craft group (mostly knit and crochet and some jewelry making ) once a month during the day. I really enjoy the comaraderie of it and I'm better during the day then at night. I get really tired after 7:00 and sometimes my pain level is higher at the end of the day. I hope it doesn't show on your Wednesday Lives. I enjoy being with everyone and being a part of your group, but sometimes it's harder for me to participate in the conversation at the end, as it's 8:00 - 9:00pm for me, and past my bedtime... But I try to take a nap on Wednesdays so I'm able to join the group. Thank you for all you do! 💜💜💜

I have often found them thrown on the ground when winter is passed. I have heard of them being thrown into a fire! I got to the point where I just couldn't do it any more. Great video! Indeed, Vicuñas (vicunya) yarn is expensive because Vicuñas are a rare, endangered Andean camelid. They are also not domesticated like llamas and alpacas. Instead they roam the higher altitudes and rounding them up for sheering is more time consuming and a lot of work! Worth the price tag knowing what is involved in the process of the retrieving it. They also have the most gorgeous eyes! I love the Premier Scarfy yarn! It is one of my favorites and your Italian sweater yarn is gorgeous.

      @@elizabethrehlinger2144 I believed it was a warmer wool because the animal lives in mountainous regions, and being so fine of a wool, i believed it would be warmer. I wanted to make sure what i found out was: Vicuñas live in the Andes, a very high mountain range where temperatures regularly drop below freezing. In order to insulate the vicuña and help regulate its body temperature, the wool fibers have tiny scales, allowing the fibers to interlock to trap air and heat. This makes vicuña wool exceptionally warm. I can understand why the wool is the most expensive. The Vicuña can only be shorn 4-5 times in its lifetime.
      Another wool that is much more cost effective, yet more luxurious than cashmere & 8x's warmer than wool is Qiviut wool.

    • @otterbabi6277
      @otterbabi6277 Год назад +2

      Actually Vicuna, while rare, are not currently classified as endangered, they are not the watch list either, about 70 years ago they were thought to be endangered, the current animal estimate is around 450,000. The herds are monitored and are maintained by natives of the Andean Alps, while they are not able to be fully domesticated they have a calm attitude, except during breeding season. Their rarity is due to local beliefs and strict local guidelines preventing the sale and export of the animals. There are a growing number of American breeders that are offering Paco-vicuña fiber. It has all the qualities of Vicuna fiber, but the cross between select Alapca and Vicuna produce a larger hardier animal with higher fiber production and even calmer personalities.

    My Dollar Tree only had the Just Cotton yarn, which I have used for dish cloths and soap sacks. I think it equates to Joann’s Big Twist Cotton. It is softer than Sugar n’ Cream and a smidgen smaller in ply, and not as stiff when working up, but some splitting occurs so it slows you down a bit, too. It is so great to see this comparison and to see how you were inspired to use each yarn. Always so informative! Thank you!

    I am a big fan of you and your you tube channel. I am presently making one of your recent patterns… the white long tunic/cover-up for myself. I have recently tried making summer crocheted tops. About six months ago I discovered all of the tutorials online and brushed up on what I learned 20 years ago when I retired from teaching. Didn’t have anything to go by except for “how-to books”. I am a visual learner so I always made afghans and scarves with very c basic patterns! After making a dozen or more afghans, I put down my hooks and tried cross stitching blankets for grandbabies. Watching your tutorials has given me the courage to brush up on my stitches and take up the hooks again. At 78, I am branching out and having so much fun. I loved this video about yarn prices and had just seen the muskox yarn from the website where you got the$300 yarn. I will pass on their rare yarns and stick to the value yarns for now. 100000% true!
      we all need to think more about that. when animals „get caught to get a quick haircut“, especially when the finished product has such a value, there will be no animal care. thats hoe it is and how it always will be as long as people take the right to make animals their own. most companies just cover up the true horror with „they jump happily through the wild before an after“. at thr end of the day its a business that wants to make money and that always has a very dark DNA no matter what they tell you.

    Sometimes I have a difficult time justifying spending $30+ on hand dyed let alone buying vicuna. I hope you enjoyed the experience. I would be scared to use the item. I am working up to alpaca lace weight yarn to combine with another yarn for an oh so soft sweater. Perhaps one day to buy some qiviuk yarn from musk ox to make a very special pair of mitts. I touched it once at a fibre festival - it was amazing and apparently several times warmer than wool. I think it runs around $100 Canadian for 50 grams.

      I have a ball of qiviut made from arctic musk oxen fiber. A friend brought it back from Alaska, and that teeny ball cost $100 - back about 20 years ago! I finally decided that I would never knit or crochet anything with it. It’s like a “pet” yarn - lives in the stash because it’s beautiful and so soft.

    Very skillful and beautiful projects that you made. As Vicuna yarn is soo rare, I also wouldn't buy it, not only from a cost perspective but is it necessary to acquire this yarn from an endangered species and the stress they endure when there other natural yarns that one can use. Personally I prefer to use a natural yarns as I believe they provide the warmth that is need as opposed to an acrylic yarn. The other side to this is that some people are allergic to natural yarns 😮. It's all about the balance and what suits your pocket at the end of the day 😀😜😊

    I love and use dollar tree yarn. Tweed is not my favorite. However the just yarn is much better and softer than those out there like red heart. Don’t get me wrong, I use all other yarns including red heart. In fact right now I’m making a baby ensemble with Bernat Baby Sport that is not only soft but beautiful. Would I buy a 300$ 28 gram skien, absolutely not. Thanks for the information though. I found it interesting. Thank you for sharing. 🤗

    The Vicuna purchase you made reminded me of a time when I was in a very expensive restaurant in South beach as a guest and they had a special cup of coffee on the menu that was $300. a cup. Because the rareness of the beans growing in the wild and the natural process that gave it it's special flavor which the waiter told me was some forest creature had to first swallow the bean, then it had to be pooped out (I kid you not) and then painstakingly collected. Well I have to say I was quite curious but I would never order that as a guest and some things are just for the very wealthy I suppose. My husband who was sitting next to me at the time said, I bet there are no refills but I still wonder what a $300 cup of coffee tastes like. I thought that Italian yarn you made the top with was stunning. The Vicuna is special for sure.

      Oh my gosh! Pooped beans. I can only imagine. Haha, thank you for sharing your story with me. I have no doubt stuff like this exists. The truth is not everyone CAN afford such a thing. Which is why I think it's cool when one person can and then share what they thought so we could live vicariously through them. I mean, if they said it was the best cup of coffee they had ever tasted, I might be more inclined to give it a try just to say I did it. But only once. 😂😂

    Wow, I purchased the exact same color of vicuña yarn , also to see what it was like to crochet/knit with. I used a carrier yarn due to the strand size being so small. I made a cowl, which is oh so soft to wear and touch. The color turned out to be a poor choice on my part, hard to see the stitches. Cowl is amazing to wear, but can’t use 99.9% of the time due to cost. Fun experiment.

    Paco-vinuña is domesticated, cross-bred alpaca and vicuña, and about 1/3 the price. Unless a local farmer is getting out of the business and happens to be selling it for 65% off... but I don't think I'll ever have that luck again!

    You, and your projects are beautiful. I am a big fan of using top quality fibers in wearable garments. If we are going to put that much love and time into making it (no matter who it’s for) it is really worth it to use the finest, most suitable materials for beauty, longevity, washability, and especially for comfort. It takes the same time and effort to make a sweater using $5 worth of plasticky, scratchy acrylic as it does to make the same sweater using $16-$25 worth of supple superwash merino. Whether I’m going to gift it, or use it myself, I want to craft it from something, and into something that will be loved and cozy for many washes and many years. I don’t think it’s fair to compare dollar store yarn (Being cheap in price doesn’t always mean cheap quality.) Craft yarn should be used for crafts, not wearables. I would LOVE to see you do a comparison on “identical” fiber content blends that are at different price points, same project work up, and with a launder test too. My fav go-to wearable yarn is LionBrand superwash merino. It’s so soft, and under $9 skein. I would like to learn if there is a comparable. I’ve seen and used 2-3x more expensive superwash merinos without any noticeable difference (other than hand dyed colors) to warrant the higher price tag. I think your choice for the tank top was gorgeous and well executed too. I hope it was comfy. I don’t think I’d buy the $300 one, but I’m glad you did and showed it to us. It’s super special and someone will be really fortunate to get a piece of that in their project. You do great work. Thanks for making the videos. ❤🏆

    Hi Tiffany. Your projects were beautiful as always. As for the last yarn. I watched a documentary on how it’s harvested, how it is used in Italy. Does the company who makes the yarn give back to the herders/shearers? They get a pittance compared to the designers.

    Tiffany, I knew you were going to say "vicuna" is the most expensive yarn. I've long wondered how it feels compared to alpaca. Would you say it is like baby alpaca? Because it's supply is so restricted these days, if we wanted true 100% vicuna coats, I imagine one would have to hunt for vicuna coats (usually men's overcoats) which command thousands of dollars... for vintage! Thanks for sharing, Tiffany! ❤

    • @CrochetWithTiffany
      @CrochetWithTiffany  Год назад +1

      Hi Chalice! I would say the feel of vicuna yarn is similar to baby alpaca. I think it's more so the animal itself that the fiber comes from that raises the price.. Oh My Gosh I couldn't imagine the cost of a coat made from Vicuna. 😱 I wouldn't dare use it out of fear of damaging it in some way. I bet it would be warm though. 😊❤️🧶

    I don't really love most of the Dollar Tree yarn except for the Tweeds. I find them to be great to work with and very soft. I used Scarfie once and was not happy with it. So I guess it all depends. The only thing I think is that maybe using the same weight for each yarn would give a better comparison of the yarns.

    • @CrochetWithTiffany
      @CrochetWithTiffany  Год назад

      Hi Nicole. You are absolutely right. Different people will have different opinions on yarns. I see what you mean about comparing something a little more in the same family or same line for a different comparison. I suppose that was not super easy when the yarn in each category is so different. Interesting idea though. Maybe considering 100% acrylic yarn in each of the 3 first categories. Thanks for the input. 😊🧶❤️
