    Really good. A message the church needs for today. Wouldn't it be great to be in a church where they had solid teaching with a good sprinkle of prophesy that was on the mark. Something to aspire to and pray for.

    Perhaps open but cautious is an excellent starting point, because it challenges people to test everything. The caution would naturally fall away in time.

    Open but discerning. I like open but cautious but I can see where it can be confusing .
    I’ve seen a lot of abuse of the spiritual gifts. 47:20 Josh says “Accurately gifted prophetic ministers who have gapping hole in their character. I’m just not impressed by someone’s character by their gift. We are all broken”
    You guys mentioned some of the reasons people may not want to use their gift and some people saying things the Lord is just not saying.
    I know some can be giving cold readings and not even aware that they are.
    But can some not be in the Lord and make an accurate prophecy? Example: Balaam.
    What do we do with Balaam? I’ve heard “if a persons prophecy comes true we should follow them or God must be speaking to them.” I don’t necessarily believe that.

    I've not listened yet, but before I do, I want to share a new thought I've had and am chewing on, regarding having the gift of prophecy today. I think perhaps it means to have a full understanding of the prophecies already declared in Scripture that are yet to take place. To see future history exactly as it is foretold in all accuracy. To me, I think, and I'm beginning to believe, that this is the definition of the gift of prophecy today. It's not one I've heard before, but the more I chew on it, the more I like it. Along with that gift though would be my sincere prayer that with that understanding, I would conduct myself more fully to being the ambassador for Christ that He intends for me to be, no matter the physical circumstances. Along with all the other titles He uses for the elect, the bride, etc., that he would grant in me the gift of becomeing more and more ready to be taken off the Potters wheel and fired to perfection.

    Abuse of prophecy - talk to someone that is apart from the situation, someone that you trust. Develop mentors. I am a very hesitant prophet so I ease my prophesies into the situation. God is with me. I am strengthened when I go forth. When the spirit is there it’s so exciting.

    A huge mistake here in this argument is the comparison of someone teaching the scriptures and getting it wrong and someone who claims to have the gift of prophecy and they get it wrong.
    HUGE DIFFERENCE.
    Someone can preach or teach not claiming to have a spiritual gift to do so, they can get things wrong as they learn context of the scriptures.
    While the person who is prophesying is claiming to hear directly from God. There is no learning curve. God speaks and they say, “thus says the Lord…” or words to that effect.

    I'm curious about the full definition of prophecy. It seems when the topic of prophecy comes up the focus is on a special word. Isn't there also a component of it being an inspired message and encouraging obedience to God?

    • @ryandawson2877
      @ryandawson2877 Год назад +1

      I would say yes. Prophecy is an inspired utterance. I don’t mean inspired like the Bible, but a compulsion by the spirit to speak. We see prophecy as praise in Luke one. We see this three different times with Zacharias, Mary and Elizabeth. All three times it is prophetic praise, words that are not premeditated, but that give forth praise to the Lord. All 150 psalms are prophetic because they are inspired scripture. Some would be predictive as in Psalm 22 concerning the Messiah, and much of it is not. It is simply praise and worship, prayer, etc. We also know that prophecy can come in a quote that says the Lord “, or this is what the Lord is saying. This can be in first second or third persons. We know that revelation can come through prophecy according to one Corinthians 14 around verses, 32:33, origin, simply be edification, exhortation and comfort, one Corinthians 14:3. So yes, I agree with you. That prophecy has a wide application and use And some people seem to major more on one than the other.

    I wanted to listen again and I will listen through the series. I think if you love the Lord and the church, you are open. And WHT the prophetic gift is given to the painfully shy, is a mystery. To stand in the middle of a service requires a boldness that must also be a gift. No one would want to interrupt a service...or be so open to judgment. And if the recipient really wanted this answer, he/she might already have known it. Plus with vision, you have to tell the vision BEFORE the meaning comes. And it come clear. Then you sit down and no one says much. But you do what you must do. I never met anyone else with this same working of the Spirit. I can only suppose it's the same with all.
    Oh, yes, dark sayings aren't dark in a bad way. They require covered knowledge. Good speaks in a language of light. That's why he introduces it with thunder. But really it's in the lightning that flashes from the east to the west and back again. A deep understanding of Job reveals how light is translated into thunder...which animals understand. Those with the grace taught by John, can hear the light rather than the thunder. It's the breath of God speaking in your ear. It's יענה the "beginning of the response of Jah." Or In the beginning was the Word. I think if you look up "response" you will find one use of the word invSolomon's passage on the Way of Life. Add the yowd and its the response of God. But this is the "good part" and a gift for all who come to this particular grace. In terms of the last being the same as the first, this grace means to divest you of whatever place your might have found, returning you to the place of beginners. To be the lowest servant of the house--the one who washes feet and who has no glorious garments. John can also mean dove and it can mean coo. We simply repeat what God says. Like a dove hears and coos in return. We are called to seek the face of God, although we come in at his feet. No one sees God except in Jesus.

    You could learn something from the early church fathers:
    John Chrysostom wrote, in his homilies on the Acts of the Apostles, he warns against false prophets, who seek to draw people away from the truth and cause division within the church. He advises believers to remain diligent, and to test the spirits, and to rely on the teachings of the apostles, and the establish traditions of the church, rather than on the claims of self proclaimed profits.
    Tertullian, in his work On the Resurrection of the Flesh, said that false prophets should be exposed and confronted, but also that they should be given the opportunity to repent, and turn away from their errors. He writes “let the false prophets, then, be questioned and confronted, and let them either amend their ways, or else be fourth with condemned as deceivers.”

    I don't agree with the idea that "judging prophecy" means it's less authoritative than Scripture. Ironically, in 1 Corinthians 10:15, Paul says "Judge for yourselves what I'm saying". Judging prophecy simply recognizes that there are false prophets.

    • @launchlaunch8786
      @launchlaunch8786 Год назад +1

      Seems Paul counters any so called prophets who would challenge his teaching in these verses:
      1 Corinthians 14
      36 Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks they are a prophet or otherwise gifted by the Spirit, let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command. 38 But if anyone ignores this, they will themselves be ignored.
      Paul is clear his words were inspired by God and expected other prophets to recognise this.

    What is "giving sovereignly" supposed to even mean? God simply IS sovereign. Everything He does is sovereign. Sovereignty simply means He has all authority. Giving into this Calvinistic definition where sovereignty means determinism just muddies the waters and adds unnecessary difficulty in determining whether or not to move in a particular gift (or anything else).

    About 40 minutes in, I agree that the Lord can speak to us any way he desires, but I think it’s possible that personalities of the individual can play a part as well. Some of us may take more time to ponder things, while others of us are just not going to do certain things unless it’s more clear. I tend to be that way. Not saying this is the way it is, but if I don’t understand the dream that well, I may ponder it for a little bit, but if something doesn’t become clear, I just assume I had a pizza drain. Lol of course I’m growing in that area, but I don’t like the kind of situations where someone calls someone out and says something like, “ The Lord says you’re going to have a great day today. “One guy came up to me on a conference, and said something like, “I see a red orange over your head. Does that mean anything to you? “I was like… No. I do believe there will be a certain clarity, maybe not the whole thing or the whole picture, but the Lord is perfectly capable of making sense. Maybe the symbolism is simply to get our attention, so that clarity will come when we inquire of him concerning it, but if something isn’t clear to me, and it’s so obscure that it could be interpreted in 10 different ways… Not gonna do that. I think some people do that because they don’t want to swing for the fences so they say things that could be said over absolutely anyone. Not disagreeing or anything, but I think there’s a balance to that.

      @janainaribeiro3892 Most charismatic churches do not operate in the manner that is instructed by Paul. I believe most of those churches have been infiltrated by demons, steering them off course into a chaotic search for the spiritual and setting aside studying the scriptures. In addition the hosts here teach how to practice and learn this gift, often getting prophetic words wrong. This seems very different than prophecies recorded in the Bible which are always infallible or the prophet is to be killed. Modern day prophets want the power of the gift without the consequences issued in the Bible.

      Not if what they are speaking is in line with the word of God, and the character of God. If you are earnestly desiring to prophesy, one, Corinthians 14:1 and 39, and you stay full of the word and the Holy Spirit, another spirit will not be able to invade the situation if you do not let it. A principal can be applied from Luke 11 versus 11:13. If you ask for the Holy Spirit, you will not get another spirit. Prophecy is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit, one Corinthians 12:7, 10, 14:1, 39, etc.

    I have no problem with a plurality of elders, as long as One is the senior elder, and the senior voice. Anything with two heads tends to be a freak. I know that poor Aliti of elders is talked about with Peter, when he says things like the elders or overseers, I exhort among you, etc., But here’s the thing with that. They met in houses. They may gather together for a really big big big big assembly, but they were house meetings, a lot of times. We could probably see this as sell groups or home meetings. So you have multiple elders in the city, not necessarily a bunch of elders of equal status, and one local assembly that we would call a church today. But if you have a plurality of people who are the head, and no one gets to veto, or on the flipside, if you have a senior leader, casting vision, and every time he turns around, he’s getting vetoed, he is being controlled by the elders, which functionally makes it not a whole lot different than congregational rule, so I’m more prone toward a scene your voice with plurality of elders if you have them. Another thing with that is ministries take time to develop. We do have in the book of revelation where the apostle John is writing to the seven churches that Jesus told him to write to, and he wrote to the “Angel “of the church at Sardis, to the “Angel “of the church at Smyrna, to the “Angel “of the church at PROGRAMAS, etc. I am prone to believe that this would’ve been the pastor or the apostolic leader of that church or the group of churches that were in that area. But there obviously was a senior leader, even if there were others in there that also preached and taught the word of God. I also believe that Senior elders or leaders need other ministers speaking into their lives, and not just yes-man. I know that this is what the plurality of elders position is trying to do. They are trying to bring in checks and balances, so it cannot simply be a one-man show. Every pastor needs a pastor, or an apostolic leader in their lives, or whatever the case may be. Anyhow, all that to say, I believe in a plurality of elders, as long as the senior leader is able to get the vision from the Lord and do it. At the cross, we are all created equal, but in authority and responsibility. We are not. I know a lot of Americans don’t like that, but it is true anyhow. That Pastor should have an apostle/Bishop/overseer/pastor in his life that he submits to or a group of elders so that he will finish well and I believe that wholeheartedly. But I do not believe that is senior elder should be afraid to correct his associates because they’ll vote him out or something stupid like that.

    • @josephjimorris
      @josephjimorris 9 месяцев назад

      Unfortunately only having one single leader in many churches today leads to a bad situation where narcissism and abuse go unchallenged. This is a serious problem in several churches that I know about personally. The healthier churches that I know have the leadership spread over a group of pastors/elders serving together. If there is a senior pastor, then it’s someone very humble and not seeking to rule the others.

    Numbers 12:6-8 doesn't say those who hear from God, in whatever form, mishear Him. There may be levels of clarity (and that passage is more about relationship), but it doesn't say those levels cross the line into indecipherability. That's not a proof-text for that idea; that's reading into it.
    There is not one proven example in Scripture where God communicates an intended message (granting that some messages are intended to be misunderstood, like parables), but no one ever hears what God wanted to say because the person mishears it.
    God does not mumble, and He's sovereign over who hears Him and who understands Him.

    Can you provide a verse in scripture that says prophecy is less than scripture? Also, I do not see where the early church would have viewed prophets any different than the Old Testament prophets. They needed to be 100 percent accurate all the time. Prophecy is without error if it is true prophecy. If someone speaks in error in the name of God even if it is once, they are to be regarded as false.

      Philip’s four daughters prophesied and we have no written record of what they said. Agabus prophesied that famine was coming and gave practical instruction for preparation. These are two NT examples showing that prophecy does not necessarily equal Scripture. It does have other usages in the body.

    • @barttyler4454
      @barttyler4454 9 месяцев назад

      @@josephjimorris
      Well the Agabus prophecy certainly came to pass and it was recorded in scripture so that is not really an example. The fact that Philip’s daughters prophesied is just that. Just because it was not written down does not mean it was any less than scripture. Many in the early church prophesied and it was written down. That just means that God chose to have certain prophecies written down, and others He did not. But they still held the same weight. If you define prophecy as a direct word from God, and I believe it should be, then it means any of those things not written down could have been written down if God chose to. It all carried equal weight.
