I always considered Synthetic Dawn to be S-tier because Machine Empires are so unique and fun to play, and essential for a good sci-fi.
They are only unique in that they are abandoned and forgotten by the devs.
Just look at everything since their release and tell me what content a ME actually got.
- hasn’t gotten a species pack
- can only use 1-1,5 of the last 4 dlcs
- got nerfed continuously over last few patches and are only really played as their variants
Honestly want Machine Empires to get some more love since they are cool
@@Lukashoffmann94 Well Machine Empires got access to the improved Synthetic Ascension Path, except Driven Assimilators have the brand new Cybernetic Path, and they still get new civics.
@@vaniellys Come again?
The machine synthetic ascension is just the normal, nerfed synthetic ascension with even more stuff cut out and nothing there to replace it.
DA's got a similar deal with Cybernetic and while they did "try" to replace the removed parts here, they spectaculary failed in the balance department.
Crucible Worlds are just worse than a normal planet in every single, concieveable way.
And don't even start with the "new" civics.
They only get the basic, standard ones, that everyone gets and those don't even get balanced, or tested for ME's.
Organic Reprocessing is the perfect example of that.
They released the same civic for ME's, without any adaptations, despite ME's having a lower food output than everyone else and they even forgot about the deficit effects.
So with the deficit exploit fixed, you now have a completely dead civic.
One last question for you to think about:
Can you name just 1 UNIQUE addition to ME's, since their launch in 2017, that wasn't part of a mechanics revamp?
Exactly + the DLC doesn't really cost much compared to other DLCs
Apocalypse should be S tier just for the Colossus, which is essential for late game performance...
Also modded. some fallen empires i play vs in the modded games have 65k armies on them, colossus is the only way to go.
Don't forget that all the species packs and other DLCs that add faction flavors contribute to the randomness of the galaxy, not just something you pick up because you want to role-play what that DLC has to offer.
Finally got all the DLC just yesterday, I wish they were free updates but I’m happy to support paradox, and the DLC is awesome
My brother in Christ, supporting is $5 they get hundreds from every individual player. Still nice sentiment on your side.
I mean, the DLCs are accompanied by free updates, so people that don't buy DLCs still get regular updates to the game.
A good sentiment but they are washed up at this point and I can only see myself donating if they grt their shit togrther
I got my last 2 today, through the affiliate link. And to no-one's surprise they were Plantoids and Lithoids. I finally caught them at the price I was begrudgingly willing to pay for them (50% off). For some reason in the past I always missed the sales for these two.
@@alexion2001 It is a relatively niche game meant for dedicated (or "core") players. Of course they are charging a bit extra, because their player base is somewhat smaller than most other titles. I mean, show me a large publisher willing to support a sizeable dev team to work full time on a single title 6 years after release, adding new features, content and major updates, WITHOUT some form of monetization. And no, despite what some overly nostalgic Quake, Starcraft and Red Alert players will tell you, this DIDN'T happen back in the day either - the old-school manual for game dev stated that you'd only support a product up to a maximum of one to two years after release, after which it was assumed that everyone who wanted to buy your game already did, the support was phased out, and you'd move the remaining team to the next project. The continued support was only granted to competitive titles, because the publishers could still monetize them thanks to leagues.
So it's never been about "sentiment", it's always been about money, and the product you get for that money. Entertainment is a business, after all.
At the very least, here you get what you pay for, and you know what you're paying for, and the thing you're paying for has some actual value in that it adds a bit of extra replayability, AND there's frequent sales if you don't feel like you want to buy on release, AND you can still play the base game with free updates even if you don't buy any DLCs. I'm willing to pay for something like that 100x over some cosmetics gambling scams which cost next to nothing to develop, bring next to no value to the game, require you to gamble away WAY more money that you'd want to admit, and the support for the game is still dropped a year or two after the original release. At least Paradox isn't trying to scam you - you know what you pay for. You don't want to pay that much, wait for a sale. And you still get added value even if you don't pay at all, because of the free updates (which are paid for by the rest of us). Can't go more fair and transparent than this. So stop complaining.
I’d switch Leviathans and Distant Stars simply because the War in Heaven is, by itself, a major game changing event that adds a considerable amount of playability to the game.
Distant Stars is great for getting new events, but the L-Cluster is a fickle thing. You either get a challenge, get nothing, or some weird shenanigans happen. Half the time, it’s “meh.”
The War in Heaven, however, has a higher chance of popping off and makes the fallen empires do something outside of being static entities that only respond when assaulted.
I don't know. I've only triggered war in heavens once and I always play with at least two fallen empires. By the time it popped the fallen empires were basically only slightly more advanced primitives to me so I don't really disagree with Montu here.
@@ruukinen, what size galaxy are you playing on?
@@MatthewChenault Usually small. Have tried playing on the larger settings but I don't see the point.
I disagree, the War in Heaven can be a major PITA. I've just become bored by all the micro involved.
The L-cluster adds options to play styles, connecting up the galaxy, which can help a lot to beat the crisis.
If you're just playing a military expansionist then I suppose you might not benefit from strategic options
@@ruukinen If you play on huge, enable a random number of FEs you soon get sick of the War in Heaven.
A big strategy becomes to take out FEs likely to provoke it.
I actually think Nemesis is one of the best DLCs, while I don't care for megacorp at all.. I'm weird 😅
I love reforming into the senate for a safe and secure society, but if you never reach the late game half the DLC does nothing. I generally use these features more than megacorp myself in all honesty though
@@MontuPlays Reformation? What heresy is this? The xeno-menace are merely fuel for our ascension.
Nemesis by far best expansion imo
Lol megacorp is my favorite by far. I don’t think I’ve played since I’ve had the game without using an ecumonopolis
@@thomasator1139 I forgot that was part of that expansion, but the titular Megacorp itself I find myself completely uninterested in
In theory, I agree that Megacorp gives you a unique playstyle.
In practice, every time I play a Megacorp, the entire galaxy is filled with a combination of more Megacorps and Total War Civics or Fanatic Xenophobes who might as well be TW empires. I can count the number of Megacorp games I got to play as a Megacorp on one finger.
So I'll put Apocalypse above it. Because it makes war in Stellaris better. And every game in Stellaris, you will go to war.
Megacorp plays best combined with overlord.
I am still here during the "are you still here" part!
I am ASTONISHED that Lithoids are f rank. I mean, it makes so you can play as ROCK PEOPLE! Lithoids being the only organic (non-robot) who can live on ANY planet type is a huge selling point for me. That and getting to play as rock people is awesome!
(music) "We will, we will, ROCK YOU!"
I'm extremely biased to Synthetic Dawn so I would put it in A Tier at the very least. I also disagree with Apocalypse being low. While Colossus and Titans aren't the most game changing features, they're going to influence every game more than you think. Titans change up fleet combat, Colossus make Purifiers even scarier, Khan's mid game crisis is an obstacle that can change the balance of power in a game quickly and the random pirate empires hanging around can be a huge ally or enemy in the early game.
Pretty solid tier list in my opinion
Glad you like it!
Was just yesterday watching your old DLC tier list, so this is perfectly timed for me!
I found your channel 2 days ago looking for exactly this video. I ended up subscribing anyway for all the other good videos. The timing is just too good.
Some great content Montu! Generally I agree with your take on espionage though I really like mechanic when you actually have no clue about new empires you've made contact with. This in my opinion adds a bit of depth to the game and makes you a bit more cautious while interacting with other empires. Necessary? Not really, but at the moment I can't imagine my game the other, older way. :D
It is quite sad that nemesis is that low on the tier list but I would agree too even if I like it, it feels like it kinda lack of content for the price it had, it would be quite better if there were choice to became different types of crisis of something more than just a lineal kill stuff to get more bonuses only thing
I think I'll buy the Utopia DLC (and maybe another one) when there's a sale on steam again. Thanks for the video, it looks like I've been missing most of the fun playing only the base game!
Can't wait (but no, really) for the inevitable advisor voice and nameset tier lists. Do what must be done, Lord Montu. Do not hesitate. Show no mercy.
The Lithoid DLC is absolutely amazing! Really good fun, great portraits and ship models, fun civics, great RPing opportunities.
Before I watched this video my conclusion: buy every DLC
Commented on the last vid where Overlord lay on your old DLC list, one hell of a reply Montu
A longer reply was needed...
Montu video let’s gooo
Thanks a lot for the video! Just picked up the base game yesterday and judging from Reddit, it seemed like I need a lot of dlc for it to be maximum enjoyable, so here I am. After watching the vid, I think Utopia, Federation, Leviathan and Distant stars are the things I could imagine wanting. Then Apocalypse down the line if I want to blow stuff up.
" The number of DLC in the game can be a little overwhelming..." Laughing in Train simulator DLC number
Rocksmith is also hilarious
Or really any other Paradox game that isn't Stellaris.
For me Apocalypse came with my original purchase that I bought on sale that included (edit: base game) this and Utopia, and I really like the marauders. Not sure if they offer this package anymore but it makes the DLC a value purchase if so.
I personally LOVE megacorp but that's more due to my affinity for having most of my empires be megacorps. I also quite like the Humanoids pack aswell.
Hell yeah more tierlist!
I went with some DLCs that I needed to create one of your meta empire builds. With aquatics of course being one of those.
Hej Montu. You know what I would really like? A series with 10-30 min eps, where you start up a new game with one of the premades and explain the basics of each species/origins etc. I.e. Human, Hivemind, Machine Empire and so on. I THINK that most casual players pretty much only play humans from Earth every playthrough because it seems abit overwhelming to take on the others, even tho we would love to try.
Is that something that you could consider doing? Like "How to play: Hivemind" and explain like Im 5, and play for 30 min. So I can watch that, and then startup a game and "copy" what you did kinda. Id love a series like that. Doesnt have to be crazy indepth, just the basics so we can get started and know what to aim for. Thanks!
When I started playing Stellaris (a few days ago, currently 40 hours in) I did so with a friend who had every DLC in the game allowing me to play the game with every DLC as well.
When I started my own game though, I noticed how limited the options were (origins, species etc).
While playing I was like "The first DLC I'm gonna get is Utopia, that seems like a good deal" so it's good to see that that one is in the S rank.
Unfortunately though, the other DLC I wanted was Nemesis, so I'm a bit sad to see that in the F tier here.
Syntetic dawn is my soft spot, love to play as machines. Also that was my first pick few years ago. (After Utopia ofc)
I gotta say, while I disagree due to my play style, after watching your videos and builds I understand why you rank them in this way, and I do think I would use this video as a framework to recommend things to friends.
Great job Montu, maybe price could be in left corner over dlc and be more visible.
I just picked up the game on a sale with the necroids dlc because I like undead factions. I'm glad that someone bothered to make this list.
Edit: after watching this video I grabbed utopia, distant stars, apocalypse, and ancient relics.
Synthetic dawn gaming!!!
Update: I have learned that synthetic dawn is two tiers too low
Synthetic Dawn is tied with Megacorps for my favorite of the dlc's.
@@LaughingBat for me it's synthetic dawn and utopia
Love the content! Is there a mods tier list coming up?
Great stuff
I got the Bonus Edition and the Explorer edition on DVD back in the day 😇 Then you get the DLC's Utopia / Plantoids and Leviathan story pack included...
With Toxoids, First Contact already out, Galactic Ambitions coming out in a week and Overlord/Aquatics about to become available at a reduced price, I hope we could have an update of this ranking list!!
I personally enjoy playing the necroid because I like to role play with organic leaders that can’t die (non hive mind). … and the hole necrophage thing with -Turing pops into your own- thing. 80 years with necrophage, then 80 years with venerable, then 50 with robust trait with engineered evolution.
As someone buying and playing on console, plus not too long got into the game.
the DLC are bundled quite nicely and recently got the game+pack 1 and pack 3 for cheap, which happen to have all but one of the S and A tier you have, which definitely add a whole bunch of good replayability but I feel the missing features of better ships, expanded politics, meaningful vassals and so on are quite easily felt.
So I'd suggest for anyone with the ability to freely choose what DLC they want to get and when in a order. play some base game get a feel for the game, buy either or both a species pack or story pack to get more of what you've got but fresher, than buy packs based on what you feel is missing or want expanded so example, is the game missing giant futuristic mega structures or do you want more options in combat, are vassal relationships not meaningful enough other than just expanding territory and so on. After that get the highly recommended ones like distant stars or leviathans if you haven't already, than just get whatever you feel like or can get.
I think this hits a nice balance for enjoyment curve bcos currently I've played a few games with the DLC I've gotten so far but it's the expanded features that I'm really missing from start to finish for my games so far.
Anyway hope this is helpful to someone.
I got all DLCs, but i have to watch it, just because i love your videos :D
I actually agree with most of this, which is cool. Question; What do you think/want Paradox will do next(Major Updates/New DLC)?
Psionics rework.
@@MatthewChenault In what way?
@@royalbluegaming7763, that’s my guess.
Crime and internal management, changes to branch offices and piracy as well as how we interact with crime and managing it.
i just startet getting interestet in stellaris, i only watched this video and one that explaines the basics of the game. what video should i watch next to get used how the game is played and get me set on my way of learning the game?
Still with you (even after having watched most of the way through the now-outdated previous version of this tier list, before noticing this update on the RUclips side-bar). =^[.]^=
Wait... This is the most up to date version
@@MontuPlays Yes, but I watched most of the previous version before glancing over and seeing *this* one. =^[.]^=
Man I'm glad I joined Stellaris in late 2019. I didn't have too many to pick from. Not like when I started CK2 just in time to get the last 2 DLC before they went to CK3.
Oh and it only took me two sittings to get through this list.
Hey Montu, when I played my first game all I had was Utopia but I was able to build Titans and Juggernauts. I always get a bit confused by what's included in the paid DLC vs what's in the free patch associated with the DLC. Is most of the stuff you discuss in that video also in the patch?
Montu. I bought most of the DLC on the Humble Bundle website about a month & a half ago maybe...
It was for a friend and I & maybe others if we can get it to play together & just to get back into the game.
I had to buy it quickly as I was leaving for a few weeks (no access to laptops) & didn't want to go through my phone at all.
I was wondering if there were a way in which I could 'Post-Link' you as the contributing factor in purchasing the game again... as I wasn't able to use any links in available in the description part of your video at that time.
you forgot deluxe edition
its s++ tier because of the intimidation factor of the arachnids portrait
Ok, I'll fall for the secret call out 😤
Also got the callout. One thing should be stressed more. When you want to play with friends, Only the host of the game needs to buy the DLCs. Others will get FULL ACCESS to DLCs' functions (not the skins).
I guess I'm a bit weird, my own priority list would be to go for anything that first increases game play/play style options as priority (things such as Utopia, Megacorp, and Synthetic Dawn), diplomatic options and similar things (like stuff from Nemesis, Overlord, and Federations) as a secondary pick, with more misc things like Apocalypse, Leviathans, and Ancient Relics as third picks, with anything else and species packs being the final picks.
Agreed there, the way he weighed things felt so strange to me. Still does. I consider stuff like the big expansions to be the 'foundation' of the game, with DLCs like Nemesis helping to add the choices the player wants, and everything else just filling in the gaps.
I really want a Pirate themed visual pack... maybe one day.
Why can't I find overlord on my console
As someone who had all dlc's for ck2 and everything for eu4 up until 2018, and a lot of dlc's for other paradox games, the only reason I never came back to this game after playing it at release was the dlc price tag. If I'm going to play the game, I want the full experience and everything it has to offer, but I'm not ready to cough out so much money. Wish they did big discounts for huge dlc bundles during steam summer sales or Christmas sales.
there's 50% off sales quite often, pick some up there
there's 50% off sales quite often, pick some up there
Nemesis is a hard S tier just for the soundtrack
Ngl that secret callout fucking alerted me when I was just partially listening
14:00
you don't need the dlc to get the namelist, i use aquatic namelists quite a bit without it
where should i contact you for a bug in achievement compatibility check? (win every war, were you can ask for them to surrender/the enemy can surrender) (and more)
My email is on the 'about' page of the channel if you want to send me something!
If you get the Humanoid species pack you can stop the diplomatic spam? Can someone elaborate on how that works? Will other empires still sometimes request subjugation?
On the console version there's 4 passess that will give you 3-4 DLCs for less than they're in total
I haven’t gotten any dlc and I’ve been playing for a long time so this will be a golden age for me
i bought stellaris about a year ago, but about a week in and 40 hours later i bought all the DLC since i was completely addicted
I still need ancient relics and federations. The game feel so different without them. I could get nemesis but it didn't change much and aquatics isn't out yet for console .
Ancient relics,i have it utopia and feds,i plan on getting apocalpyse so i can utilize my ecu even more
Have all the dlc on console now I got a pc 😅 so I gotta rebuy it all when it goes sale since I missed the summer sale cus I spent all my money on the pc.
I know and like Ancient Relics pack, but man I am actually quite peeved after 500 hours in this game with the pack, I've never gotten the Zroni precursor. It really put a damper on my enjoyment of the DLC.
I keep getting it as a machine empire…
@@duncanharrell5009 Dang that sucks.
I am the returning player and i was totally lost last month when i wanted to add some dlc
I bought synthetic dawn because i thought i could make a robot republic, but from what i could tell, I could only be a gestalt consciousness.
Can we get an epilog for Toxoids?
"min-maxxing" your stellaris install
Do you think they'll add more specialized vassal types later on, like perhaps bureaucrats (unity) in Overlord later?
Also Masterful crafters, Clone Army, and Aquatic GG
Price tag as energy credit signs XDD
i used your humble link... i bought them all XD
Half of the benefit of the DLC is that it gives you new types of foreign powers in your galaxy.
The best of the DLC are those that let you play a drastically different style or build. Also, bots are easy mode.
Where is horizon signal? WORM LOVES YOU
Thanks for the video
The only true Stellaris DLC tier list would have every single DLC in the S-Tier
S for Stellaris.
A very solid tier list, if they improved on the espionage features I think Nemesis could bump into C or maybe B tier.
Because of personal use I'd place Aquatics into B tier, though I also wouldn't mind if they kept adding more features to it ^_^.
Necroids was very disappointing for me and I've ended up disabling it on my launcher because I was sick of half of my galaxies using their species portraits.
I first got synthetic dawn
I think I got like lathyathans and then utopia then others after
Thanks for this list. I honestly hate how games, specifically large scale strategy games, wind up costing literally hundreds of dollars to have the "full" experience. It's just kinda gross feeling to know I'm not going to have everything unless I spend more money on a game I already bought. I'm more inclined to pay full price for another game.
Own every S to B tier DLC, thanks for the verification that I chose correctly :P
I bought all DLCs except toxoids (which isn't needed)
I also recommend star wars mod for epic gameplay
Never forget when I could host all DLC games with only Utopia, Leviathan, and Synthetic Dawn
paradox should add cinematics in-game
I just got PC so it sucks I have to re buy the dlc but I love this game so I am more than willing to spend the money
are you able to do an Auto planet builder video?
Planet automation?
Don't worry. It's on the agenda!
18:05 Wait. I thought colossi where larger? They cost way more so I just kind of assumed they where...
If stellaris did realistic scaling?battleships wouldve been seen as a small dot lol, also i think colossus should atleast have the size of death star
My brother in the Shroud did you just diss Lithoids like that?
Still with you. :)
Nice
I wish this game had the same subscription based dlc option like EU4 does. I could totally do paying $20 for picking the game up for a few months before deciding if I want to spend the hundreds of dollars on the actual dlc
I'm a new player. I don't know why but I want the Lithoid dlc out of all things.
I would say I strongly disagree, but I tend to play militaristic empires:
Overlord, Apocalypse, Nemesis, and Federations are all either A or S tier
Utopia is A or S tier
Megacorp is solid C tier, maybe B tier, I always felt it was kinda mediocre to be honest; the update that came with it was extremely good though
Necroids, Lithoids, Aquatics, Plantoids, and Humanoids are all C Tier, they do add content to the game, and can change the gameplay loop a fair bit
Leviathans, Distant Stars, and Ancient Relics I honestly don't feel add that much content. I wouldn't have a F Tier, but if I did, they would be in it. From a pure gameplay loop perspective, they just don't add that much. Some of the events and whatnot are cool, but generally speaking you can just play on autopilot and ignore them. Few to none are going to have any real impact on your Empire.
-For contrast of my reasoning, Necrophage DOES change how your species and Empire works quite considerably, and builds with just about any expansion, excluding only Synthetic Ascension and Synthetic Dawn. It makes a LOT of RP and Mechanical builds functional. The other stuff doesn't really change the game or your empire all that much (events, which are entirely random and unpredictable).
-Overlord, Nemesis, Apocalypse, easily add between the 3 of them, probably the LARGEST expansion of actual game mechanics to the game for the most types of playstyles possible. Utopia does add a lot, even for those that don't play Hivemind, but honestly I'd say you could completely ignore the non-major expansions and be 100% fine.
I would say you SHOULD pick up Utopia, Federations, Apocalypse, Overlord, and Nemesis, these are core, massive additions to the game. Everything else is kinda irrelevant and you can more or less ignore. Synthetic Dawn and Megacorp only really improve on those SPECIFIC playstyles. And while I like the species packs, they aren't as huge additions to the game like the main expansions are.
I put ancient relics at bottom s tier, you can get a ecu VERY EARLY and have a booming alloy production where you surpass half galaxy combined in terms of production, combine this with apocalypse, utopia and federations dlc,you can have a major economical and military superpower by 2300s
I agree with Apocalypse being in D tier. I would move plantoids to A tier though as its my favorite species pack...
I never play Humanoids, Lithoids, or Necroids so I would put them in F tier. Only thing I really like about Humanoids is the masterful crafters civic
When will they add a DLC that adds Montu or Stefan as advisors? I'd buy it.
.... Actually, hold up, are there any mods that do that?
nemesis is worth it for big cube ship
I think both the playerbase and the corporate executives have been spoiled over the years, us with some incredible DLCs and them with the sheer amount of money we give them. So I'd have to say, are some of the newer DLCs way overpriced for what they provide? Yes. However they still provide a lot which is then further depreciated by how much other DLCs provide comparatively so they get a lot of flak especially on Steam, despite being quite honestly...alright. I have no solution it's just my current opinion.
I just buy all the DLC that are 50% off while ignoring the newer ones that are to new to go fully on sales (anything necroids and newer currently)
Wasn't there a synthetic dlc pack?
Yeah. Its in B tier!
@@MontuPlays Sorry, I missed it 😅
Watching this after buying every DLC in bundle...
Apparently this video is 'blocked content' on the stellaris discord. Wild
Megacorp S tier (or at least A tier)!
The are all S tier for me for I can’t imagine playing without any of them
Just me personally, but MegaCorp would be F-tier because that was the DLC that also brought about a major fundamental change in game mechanics, many (most?) of which were just to utilize the concept in the MegaCorp DLC. I mean you spend a very long time playing a game, understanding it's mechanics, how to win better, etc and BAM here's basically a new game with the same background stuff. As much as I tried I could not get back into the game at all and quit. That is until recently I decided that I've been away long enough that I wouldn't have the game mechanics hardwired in so hopefully I could learn the "new" game.
I mean you can still roll back versions
@@Hovstaschack you can yes, but then you lose any of the new stuff that's introduced whether it's races, techs, planet types, or heck even bug fixes
Problem with stellaris DLC's and time playing, is I don't want to play more than around 8-10 hours. So I never get past around 2250-2275. Then if the DLC isn't usable in early game then it's not as valuable, IMO.
Become the Crisis was such a horrible idea.
Why do machine empires suddenly become enraptured with conquering the Shroud, when they can't interact with it in any other way?
Why is there NO internal pushback against your empire overnight deciding to become omnicidal?
Why does the crisis empire use ramshackle ships recycled from the Marauders and space pirates?
If the Crisis perk would trigger one of multiple different storylines depending on exactly what empire picks the perk it would be cool, but in the state it is currently in nothign can convince me that the entire Become the Crisis content was hacked together in a week tops.
