Splendid! I agree, there's a consistent 'sound' to this album that firmly defines each track as belonging to this, and only this, album. That's actually true of all their albums, now I think about it.
Ya know, I read an article very recently in which the interviewer asked Mark if he had a designated sound he was after; Mark said no, he never knew how the album or songs would sound but there were always lengthy discussions about how the albums were to *feel* , how to build a particular mood on each album; he knew how the album was to feel, well in advance of completion. This, paired with what you've said there - which I agree completely with, signifies the band's success in this endeavour. Each of their albums, though they were all quite diverse - never repeating a sound but ever evolving, each album has an overall defining mood to them. The songs wouldn't sound right on another album. Even though a lot of folks try to pair 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock', I think otherwise and that each is complete unto itself as separate works of art.
@@eidetecker - Well said! And also, on top of every single TT album having its _own_ sound, they progress from one to the next by building on musical ideas that had already been hinted at on the previous album; Like 'Chameleon Day' on 'The Colour Of Spring' was a taste of what was to come next on 'The Spirit Of Eden', for example 🙂
it is just so much fun watching someone experience this great music for the first time. brings back the memory even though i've listened to this song well over 1000 times.
I realised a moment ago that I've known this song and album for 36 years now and that I was only 16 back then!! 🤯😅
This is a masterpiece. Brilliant. Flawless. Incredibly moving and soulful.
Was lucky enough to see them at the Hammersmith Odeon when they toured this album. One of the best concerts I've seen, they were on fire.
I was there mate ...one of the greatest nights of my life .Hollis was in god mode .
Massive respect for actually living in the moment by listening to the whole song without pausing. Talk Talk is one of the underrated 80's groups. This whole album is a body of work
Ty ADV :)
The quality of this album is sublime. Very well thought through. And I so like the colours of the instruments in combination with Mark's voice. His tone has this vulnerability to it that is very attractive. And the bass....
It's a bit like Kate Bush's 'Hounds Of Love' album but led by a _male_ singer, I reckon! 🙂 'The Colour Of Spring' was released only a year later, too! And of course, also Kate's albums _always_ have great bass tracks on them! 🙂 ...Isn't that actually a Kate Bush album cover in your profile picture?! 😄😉
@@mightyV444 yes it feels like there are some similarities between Talk Talk's/Mark's and Kate Bush's approach to the composition/production of these albums. They weave instrumental tapestries like no other. Thanks for pointing this out. And yes, my pp is from Kate's Aerial album.
I’ve been listening to this album ever since it was first released and it’s still so fresh to me. I know I’ll never tire of it or Marks beautiful voice. I can’t wait for your reaction to the final track though :) Such a brilliant album. Thanks for another great review.
Ty AJ!
BEEN waiting so long for u to do another talk Talk reaction. Ever since I watched your Happiness is easy video I’ve listened to every talk talk album and their fantastic. Should do Spirit of Eden After This Album. Time It’s Time Is my favourite off the colour of spring. Thank you for getting me into talk talk.
Time it's Time is a masterpiece
@@Ignatius1972 so is Happiness is Easy, in fact so are all the other songs. It's in my top 5 albums still, and I've got a LOT of albums.
When you want to listen to Spirit Of Eden, of which I like to be sure, you might first hear the song It's Getting Late In The Evening. It's a phenomenal B-side, I think of Life's What You Make It. It marks the exact middle between TCOS and SOE. You won't be disappointed, sir.
Was originally planned for the album but thrown off to make room for Life's What You Make It, apparently! Agree that it's a real stunner - a symphony for variophon and organ.
@@progmeup - Ooh, I will have to check that one out shortly myself then! Thank you for the info, also to Rien van Dijk! 😀👍
Awesome music from my younger days❤😎
It's so great that you champion Talk Talk. They've always been a favorite of mine (I have a lot of their 12' mixes from my dj-ing days. Always great to see them getting some love!
About background walls you were talking about. I was trained many moons ago with matching colours in repairing aircraft seating leathers. It is a scientific fact that allows you to be best viewed with a blue background. Your colour skin and blue has a correlation to the watcher. It helps the watcher stay focused and pinpoint their attention. Cannot give you exact references but it is what I was taught from an expert. And mixing colours to get the correct match using colour charts was such an interesting subject and opened my eyes to what colours do. Whenever I see someone in front of the camera with a blue background, I know that they know that piece of technology. One of the most professionals of people on this planet was on a vlog and I knew before I saw him, he would have a blue background. Guess what; he did. I have watched him dozens of times and everytime, yes, you guessed it, blue background. Thought you may be interested JP. Back to talk Talk. Such a unique voice.
Interesting Derek, never heard about that. Ty
Went to see Talk Talk in London in '86 (showing may age - ha!) and this song just blew me away. It's one of those songs that is actually better live. So sad we won't be able to experience it again :( x
Hah! I was a Canadian visiting London late July 1986 and I remember buying a Talk Talk bootleg cassette at a street music bin. It was from one of their recent live shows (Hammersmith, May '86?). Maybe you were at that show!
@@SteveMenardDesignDXM Yep! Hammersmith Odeon, it was May - I've still got the old ticket stub somewhere! (I'm a tad sentimental like that!!) Small world :)
Nice!
Great song amazing band 👍
Can’t wait for your spirit of eden reaction
😁
Yep - I’m also hoping this goes straight to Spirit of Eden then Laughing Stock.
One of my favourite songs ever.
stunning album. way ahead of its time. a masterpiece and one of the best albums of all time. No doubt.
I can't believe I have this album and barely listened to it. I have to bust it out and obsorb it, it's beautiful. Thanks for bringing it back to life for me. Please check out Highland, Hard Rain by Aztec Camera, you will love it!
Another Great tune from the Great Talk Talk ☝️❤️ RIP Mark 🙏 thanks for the reaction JP ☝️❤️
from the first Talk Talk Video "Talk Talk" in 82 I was hooked, and thats why I like everybody being inpressed by them (Mark Hollis) up to today.... so thank you
Happily! This album was brilliant
You should do the next song Chameleon Day and Time Its Time both together cause they go into each other and Chameleon Day is the shortest song on the album. Time its Time is a masterpiece
Yep, good suggestion. I believe he said he would do just that at the very beginning of the album.
Will do 🙃
Oh God!! I love this song!!!
Another glorious track. This has my favourite vocal melody on the album.
Mark Hollis was a genious, you need to listen to is solo and last album.
A great album and a delight to play from true vinyl and a good stereo set. I still use my NAD3030 and B&W 110 with a Thorens player for pruductions like this. I would like to suggest you listen to the last two tracks in sequence. Chameleon day flows oh so quietly and gently into the Time its time track as a well earned finale!
Will do Alfred! Ty!
Such a unique sound.
Drinking a few beers and enjoying this song :)
Cheers!🍻
I’ve been watching your videos today - mostly the Talk Talk ones. Whodathunk watching someone listen to music would be so much fun? I smiled a lot. Your analysis of both the music and lyrics seem spot on.
Well thank you so much Chris! Glad you've been enjoying the videos!
A classy creative band Not overly complex musically...not at all But always engaging Mark's voice has much to do with this Keyboards always present which seem to allow for the effects of short stark guitar riffs....kinda like choppy guitar waves on a keyboard ocean Mark often doesn't write/sing in complete sentences which lends a very impressionistic quality that blends so well with the keyboard guitar ocean Blusey and full of meaning Love 'em Always have
Your analysis just listening to a song just once is extremely impressive what a brilliant mind you have jp.
Always great bass!
Tim Friese-Greene doesn't get enough credit for the production and a good bit of the keyboards, along with Stevie Winwood and Mark.
If you had followed the Julian Calendar, tonight would be New Year's Eve.
This is an album where repetition works in a hypnotic fashion. I enjoy this song... heck, I am still enjoying this album.
Bruce Cockburn's "Loner" would be a great song to follow this.
Talk Talk - I BELIEVE IN YOU. Thx.
If (when!) he does "Spirit of Eden" that'll be included, don't worry!
As far as Talk Talk, I'd like to suggest that you take a step backwards and listen to the album "It's my Life" before continuing forward. Got some really good songs on it as well. In fact my favorite all time Talk Talk song comes off of it. That being "Tomorrow Started".
@@Katehowe3010 I get your point. Maybe that would be the way to go. I was just thinking that "It's My Life" was their bridge album into what they became. Plus the song, "Tomorrow Started", to me, was a step away from the Pop roots and more into what they became. But I do see your point, and that probably would be best after all.
Hi, Justin. Dave from Blighty. In a bit of a funk myself today; doesn't help, living in locked down London. At least I have you and your great musical choices to cheer me up (plus Coach Kosak and Claudia over at Hasfit with their brilliant indoor exercises for seniors like me). Although Colour of Spring is one of my favourite 80s albums, I don't think this is a stand-out track. Still, I agree with your comment about their use of space (I might call it 'light and shade'), and it's a great instrumental soundscape accompanying Mark's unique voice. I particularly like Robbie Mac's dobro playing. Reminds me of Dan Tyminski in Union Station (now there's a band to check out; American/bluegrass with the sublime vocals of Alison Krauss)
Ty Dave, hope the music brought some light into your shade😃
I've been new to this Talk Talk journey you've taken us on. I just cannot help but thinking Steve Winwood when I hear this album.
Couple other artists efforts from the same time period that I hope you get a chance to check out :
Go West - the first album is fine to get started .
Wang Chung - yes , the same group that brought us the annoying ' Everybody have Fun Tonight ' hit single also crafted a completely different sounding , brilliant soundtrack album for the movie ' To Live and Die In L.A. ' -
Another good one from Talk Talk. I'm off to listen to Definitive Gaze by Magazine.
Love this one, maybe not the best on the album but the vocal tone is................(no words).
Off the wall suggestion for an album to try that really makes the best of musical space - Ben Christopher’s, ‘My Beautiful Demon’ For a taster try the title track or ‘It’s been a beautiful day’ or ‘Before the Winter Parade’ or ‘skyscraper’. The whole album, like ‘The colour of spring’ is a thing of rare beauty.
The guitar solo is, once again, not actually a guitar solo - like on "I Don't Believe in You" it's a synth played through an amp, by Ian Curnow.
Yep many people confuse that.
It's actually very well done soundwise and playingwise in a way that gives it both a guitar and keyboard vibe at the same time. Just adorable.
I'm sure you felt the funk while listening to this one. Toptrack !
Talk Talk always makes me feel better, too. 😊 If you love space in a song you’ll really dig Chameleon Day. Only two more songs on this terrific album and then on to Spirit of Eden, yes? I’m so excited for you to experience it!
And : LAUGHING STOCK.
FOR ME , THE BEST .
"All you do to me is talk, talk
Talk, talk, talk, talk
All you do to me is talk, talk
Talk, talk, talk, talk
All you do to me is talk, talk"
From Talk Talk's single, "Talk Talk" ;)
The stories I have to this album.
I know what you mean about being in a funk... been unemployed now close to a year and have been doing much to do with nothing but yet I feel I don't have enough time in the day... strange. Oh yeah, the song. I never paid much attention to these guys but I've been liking the song reactions thus far to this band. Cheers.
@Justin
Great to hear these songs again.. I will be listening to them again now, starting with their first album.
Have you heard Gene Loves Jezebel? Id recommend everything up to their split in 1987.
They enjoyed some commercial success to that point, then went in separate directions, having later to dispute the band name's rights via through court. Identical twins Jay and Michael Aston both eventually settling on equal rights to GLJ. I prefer Jay Aston's GLJ to Michael's. Just a side note, but Jay had the slightly better voice and played guitar. Just thought I'd mention.
Ty J E, never heard of em!
Cool..
I think you might dig some of their stuff based on a lot of our similar likes. Best regards!
Hot House Flowers.
Give it up.
Re my earlier waffle, it's Americana!
... and it's Jerry Douglas on the dobro in Union Station. Told you I was in a funk!
Talking about SPACE. I think Mark said that music is between 2 notes as well. Or something like that
@@Katehowe3010 Correctomundo. ❤️
When you have finished this great album it's time to listen to Prefab Sprout - Cruel.
Steve McQueen in U.K. In the U.S. known as Two Wheels Good album. Bonny is a great song.
And their album 'Jordan:The Comeback'.
@@Llydrwydd I think that Cruel is the perfect introduction to Prefab Sprout. After that Steve McQueen (Two Wheels Good).
P.S. I REWATCHED YOUR REACTION TO SUZANNE VEGA- LUKA!! I JUST LOVE HER AND APPARENTLY SO DID ALOT OF OTHER VIEWERS!! A SIMILAR REQUEST I SAW WAS- MARLENE ON THE WALL!! ITS REALLY GOOD BUT I WOULD PREFER YOU REACT TO- LAST YEARS TROUBLES!! OKAY BYE- BYE FOR NOW!!!
Listen 'Maggotbrain'. If you don't stop with the E.S.P. I'm going to funk you up P- Funk that is! Time to give George Clinton some love. It will be no Little Feat and there will be no Talk Talk. But ' Free your mind, and your ass will follow'. Peace and Soul Power.
You should explore The Fixx.
Nice groove. Is that Steve Hogarth on vocals?
h was a Talk Talk fan ;)
Hey Justin My Man!! Okay so I must admit you were SPOT ON AGAIN with your reaction Imo! I was so excited to here this band for the first time!! Remember?? I listened to them on my nighty walk on headphones!! Just BEAUTIFUL!!! But I must also admit with each passing song this is sounding WAY TOO SAMEY LIKE YOU SAID!! You also said you didn't really care but for me it seems to show a lack of creatitivity within the relms ofcan LP! I don't get how that would be enticing!! Reliable yes but come on!! The same drum beat for almost each song and all the way threw each song without changing until the last 20 sec of each song??!! I dont know but that kind of pattern would seem to not lead to siustaining success of any kind! Just sayin! And apparently from some of the comments most of their music is very similar!! Like I said before- very pleasent to the ears but very boring after awhile too!! If anything spread out your listens to this band a little more!! PLEASE GET TO MY SONG REQUESTS!!! EVERY SONG ON THERE IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER!! AND VERY APPEALING TO THE EAR IMHO!! Okay sir i will see you tomorrow!!! Thx for heart BTW!! YOUR #1"AZ FAN MICHAEL😽😸😊😊
Ffwnc in Welsh. Or Ffync. This ain’t Ffynci though. It drags ever so slightly. But what can u do eh? Blue Nile.check. Talk talk . Check. Prefab Sprout doh
Thomas Dolby noise reduction quality diverse productions Time it’s time 🛤🦆🎨🌸
During the introduction I thought that this could be a song that I would like. Then it fizzled out for me. I guess I don’t care for Mark Hollis‘s voice and there’s not quite enough going on musicianship-wise to keep my attention. With a better voice and more interesting playing, I might have put this one on a playlist. So far, this song is the one I like the most from the album.
Funny, I was fine when i got up this morning. I only got depressed when i saw you were posting another talk talk tune. Will this seemingly interminable album never end. Give me a shout when you get to laughing stock. I've heard that's supposed to be ok.
BTW, missing the snowmen already.
Eh, good but not a great song.
