    Garchomp is what happens when Gamefreak decided that it was finally time to slightly minmax their Psuedo Legends from all-arounders or mixed attackers to a terrifying Lightning Bruiser. They gave Garchomp the highest HP and Speed of the Psuedos in exchange for worse attack, special attack and defenses… with the Attack stat still hitting 130 though. We should thank the stars it relies on Swords Dance to buff since if it got Dragon Dance, everything just dies (like how a few ROM hacks have shown)

    another point that was sorta danced around in the video is the fact that Garchomp only had Sand Veil in Gen 4. Nowadays, evasion abilities would always be banned, but Rough Skin remains an option on Garchomp (and as said in the video, Garchomp is now freed from Ubers). I remember all the arguments made back in the Gen 4 OU days, about how Chomp's bulk is better than freaking Swampert, an actual defensive Pokemon! I initially and quite naively thought he was manageable at first because I would run Ice Punch on my Metagross who wouldn't be OHKO'd by non-banded EQ and then OHKO back with IP and later when Latias was unbanned I ran a Scarf Latias which revenge killed Chomp, DDMence and DDGyara.
    But it wasn't till I reached the higher ladder that I truly understood the horror of this beast. Yache berry prevented any sniping with Ice moves and Sand Veil made everything shaky unless you removed the Sand with your own weather. That Sub SD Set with Salac berry well and truly had no counters after a SD and Salac boost, you set that up late game and it's all over. Garchomp really set a precedent by being the first non-legendary to be banned to ubers.

    • @ShiningJudgment666
      @ShiningJudgment666 2 года назад +1

      Wobbuffett was banned before Garchomp because of Shadow Tag in Gen 3. There's the fact it could OHKO or 2HKO everything in OU with Life Orb and SD too. Of course, it can't run everything all at once (SubSalacSD falls short on power early-game but late-game, it's got more than enough power to clean everything up, ChainChomp or MixChomp can beat physically Defensive Pokemon easier but struggles against Cresselia, foregoing Yache Berry for a Life Orb or another item means a risk of losing to Ice coverage etc) but fact it also had a chance to beat its various checks for various sets due to Sand Veil and Sandstorm being so prevalent made that less of an issue.

      @@ShiningJudgment666 Ah right lol I forgot about Wobba! Yeah he was in fact the first non-legendary to be banned. But I guess he was banned more out of a technicality due to Shadow Tag and his niche to guarantee at least 1 kill or setup, he wasn't threatening at all by himself and certainly not to Stall teams. Chomp on the other was capable of slaughtering entire teams if you weren't well prepared for him. Chain Chomp and Mixchomp were all extremely threatening and with the LO as you mentioned it over-centralized the metagame. It almost required running 2 checks with Ice type coverage and or STAB Ice Shard which at the time was limited to only a handful of mons!

In gen 7 its main rival darkrai, previously the only dark type better the it got nerfed so bad it might as well of been deleted from the game, which made yveltal much better, now its top 5 in ubers. In gen 8 Ghost Calyrex is the best offensive pokemon in the tier, only fearing dark types and since yveltal is the best darktype, boom 80% useage; plus yveltal's other rival, dark arceus got deleted just like darkrai the generation before, so theres even less competitors for your dark type slot on a team.

      History, gen 3 was smogon's first metagame and it was developed dugtrio playing a key role in the tier, being able to trap and eliminate many top tier pokemon. Dugtrio is weaker in gen 3 too, it doesn't have some moves like physical pursuit (which is what dugtio uses to ko ghost type pokemon who can switch out of areana trap!) and theres no U turn that common pokemon like jirachi can use to give dugtrio free entry, in gen 3 dug has to use the rare dry baton pass or just get in like everybody else by switching in normally (not ideal with its low bulk!). A dugtrio ban would destabilize the tier and cause a butterfly effect that would get many high tier pokemon like tyranitar, celebi, metagross and blissey suspect tested with at least some of them outright banned. Sash nidoking gets immediately popped by any entry hazard or any chip damage. You can't bring it in the entire game and are essentially playing a 5v6, and you cannot even switch it into garchomp since its slower. And even if it worked, not every team is gonna want a nidoking, or a scarfer, and even then, what scarfer? A lot of them get outsped by scarf chomp, so youd need something fast and frail, they can't switch into any move other than SD, you'll likely need a stab ice beam to kill chomp through yache berry (and even then might still fail), and baiting them in and double switching out is a thing. You can just wear them down through stealth rocks, which they're weak to, sand, spikes... and god forbid if chomp gets a substitute you're toast. If every team needs one specific scarfer to ""handle"" chomp and it doesnt even work half the time that means chomp is broken

      @@thatgamerguy6449 1"but garchomp confused me because of Sash nidoking" how else am I supposed to interpret this
      2 i went "on about scarf chomp" because if you're staring down a gen 4 chomp and don't know its item, and you send in your ice type or whatever, and they get outsped because chomp turns out to be scarfed, you just lost your garchomp counter. If you're using scarf for this scenario, and chomp turns out to be yache berry, you don't ohko it and you just lost your garchomp counter. You don't know their item, they do, and they can just switch into a defensive mon since a choiced attacker who you know will click an ice move is pretty exploitable.
      I do like chomp and i run into problems post gen 4, but you're misreading what I said pretty hard. Half the point of the vid is that there wasn't a defensive option to beat garchomp at the time. No fairy, no corv, no ferro, no unaware fairy type clef, and sub+SD takes advantage of too passive walls and good luck stopping +2 attack chomp in gen 4

      That's a custom avatar, presumably from winning a tournament on Smogon or some room event on Showdown itself

    Honestly sounds like it was mostly sand veil. Also explain why lando was not banned. You talk about over centralized alot but lando is one of the most overused pokemon ever

    What is power creep?

    • @lachainone
      @lachainone 2 года назад +5

      Each generation, the level of power of the best Pokémon teams get higher than the gen before

      power creep is like the strength of each new release getting stronger, basically with each new generation the power level of the game gets higher and higher compared to previous releases. a good example is something like mega rayquaza and zacian.

      others have already explained it well, but I will add that the reason it goes up each generation is Game Freak has to find some way for the new pokemon to stand out and so their stats climb higher and higher (plus they always seem to want to push some new mechanic like Z-moves)
