It's a knock on effect of optimization of a metagame.
If you are making a team to face a random set of 6 viable pokemon in ADV, let's say in B- or above on the rankings, Snorlax will more likely than be a valuable asset into those random 6 things. Even if your opponent rolls one or even two of Skarmory, Gengar, Tyranitar, and Metagross, the likelihood they roll all four is pretty low.
But now we have pushed the metagame. We have seen that the existence of three or four of them on the same team is viable, and that when on the same team they make a team with Snorlax play nearly 6v5 with advanced fodder, so running Snorlax is constantly a risk, and one decreasingly worth actually taking.

    • @sephikong8323
      @sephikong8323 Год назад +2

It's also in big reason that the role compression Snorlax offers ...... isn't that valuable most of the time since it's fairly bad as both a Physical Attacker and a Special Wall, why would you want a slow physical attacker that can't do anything to Skarmory and Gengar (unless you run Shadow Ball but that's it's own can of worms) and does not have that great of a MU vs Metagross and Tyranitar (notably if it slots in Shadow Ball for Gengar instead of EQ, but even with EQ it needs to nail them on the switch with it) that lacks resistances when you could pack Metagross instead who has much better physical bulk, typing and hits harder overall ? Why would you run a special wall with no recovery (outside of Rest), no team support moves and that can't even switch into Gengar without being permanently ruined and that is pretty flimsy against Zapdos when you could run Blissey instead?
Snorlax is basically a mix between Metagross and Blissey but so much worse at their individual task that in most cases you are better off taking both of them at the cost of a team slot rather than relying on Snorlax to do an ersatz of both

Definitely a sentiment I and I'm sure all other advers can agree with, the decline in Snorlax usage in the last 4/5 years is not a coincidence. I rarely build with the assumption that Snorlax can perform all the special checking that my team requires. I actually think that the most critical partner for Snorlax is a powerful enough sweeper, I think all my snorlax teams in the last year have had bulky ddtar or a ddmence.
I think Snorlax can actually provide a service to these sweepers in the vast majority of games. for example - chip down a Skarm with focus punch and then immediate boom into Metagross has now put two pokemon that previously threaten to stop a sweep into range of attacks. the key here is that the vast number of threats Snorlax was meant to check early game can still be checked at least once late game, bulky ddtar is a perfect pokemon for this as with a lum berry it can boost vs the vast majority of special attackers in the tier.
I think this actually echoes what you said at one point Kev, about how offensive teams in dpp can afford fewer walls. My advice to anyone interested in trying what I've discussed here would be: See Snorlax offense more like a Smeargle team, granted, you're welcome to play a slower pace, but in the end; a Snorlax game will be won by trading resources to get your sweepers closer to winning, Snorlax can take Zapdos tbolt once and make a significant advancement to your potential sweep with its boom. The problems in the builder arise when people expect it to do more, Id rather let those games be a happy coincidence.
hope some people found that interesting :)

Snorlax gets one, maybe two switch ins and has to make them count. This makes it somewhat prediction reliant and limited by 4mss. Assuming SelfDestruct and SuitTar to drop Shadow Ball, it has to choose from BSlam/EQ/FPunch/Curse. Predicting wrong loses so much momentum and the reward for predicting right isn’t always worth it. An incosisntent mon for an inconsistent playstyle. It prefers facing offense in a meta where defensive teams are more common. My ladder scrub opinion

Snorlax is probably the biggest casualty of Gen 3's reworked EV system. Part of why it was so strong in previous generations was that it didnt have to choose between what stats it speced into whereas a lot of Pokemon that only really fill one role (say, Gengar) arent as bothered by that change because they only care about certain stats. Snorlax would need to spec into every stat to be able to function properly in Gen 3 OU and the fact that it cant hurts it more than most and the good qualities it does have arent enough to compensate

Add 2 of the most dangerous pokemon in ADV that set sun or rain on switch-in, kick Ttar down to a B rank pokemon, and threaten the daylights out of every single normal resist; add 2 special attackers that make Zapdos look like a UU pokemon who constantly need to switch into and threaten the weather setters out; add Thunder Wave to the weather setters so they force these big special attackers to refresh or falter against weather setters later and in doing so give lax an incredible attacking opportunity; add the most dangerous pokemon in ADV who demands that an opposing Metagross or Jirachi remain close to full health lest they be unable to save a team from said dangerous pokemon; do all of this and you have Ubers where Snorlax thrives. Tanking Latios Thunder still hurts way more than Zapdos but Leftovers actively healing Snorlax and offsetting Spikes damage helps so so much. I hope my use of semicolons weren't as upsetting as the title and if anything more upsetting!

To be fair, Normal-type offense in general is pretty bad in ADV OU. Snorlax, Tauros, Dodrio, Ursaring, Slaking, Swellow, etc. all suffer from the same problem of being unable to consistently dish out damage when stuff like Tyranitar, Gengar, Skarmory, etc. can easily stomach a hit and take back momentum.
Yes I'm aware you can slap a coverage move to try and bypass these checks, but a savvy player can easily dance around this to get set up opportunities. Again, Gengar and Skarmory don't care about a Normal type STAB and Earthquake. This is why teams that rely on a physical attacking Normal type is commonly paired with Magneton or a pursuit user like Tyranitar or Houndoom in order to punch holes to compensate for how inherently flawed Normal type offense is. But by that point, why not just drop the Normal type offense in favor of generally more consistent Pokémon like Salamence or Metagross?

good question. I'd have to think about it more, but you 100% have metagross snorlax claydol. probably gengar for its speed and ability to generate some momentum against physical walls. almost surely either regirock or registeel. camerupt might be needed too for its ability to answer will-o-wisp, and the extra help against phys walls/zapdos is appreciated. idk I just made this up on the fly but meta/lax/dol/gar/camerupt/regirock or steel seems decent. you'd have to tweak movesets to help against swampert, who's a pain to switch into, and you can't just spam boom bc of protect.
at first I thought cloyster would be a waste on such teams since a boom-heavy strategy doesn't really synergize well with spikes, but maybe it'd help an agility meta clean lategame or something, and it DOES work well with gar. you need cloy's more offensive pace and ability to hit normal resists though, no chance of forretress. theoretically you could make use of smeargle and spore lol. I also like weezing, but it's even tougher to fit, since it competes with gar and I think you really want that speed.

W/o gar, forre has a real shot at winning the spikes war vs a lot of teams. Forre also does a great job making sure Metagross doesn't just run the team over. Ludi is a nice check to pert/meta if needed and does solid chip/healing with leech seed. Plus it can sweep with rain if blissey is gone. The removal of sand, spikes, gar, and skarm's item is stuff that the team does naturally, so lax finds itself in a pretty good environment to just do what it does. I honestly like this team with utility lax or curse lax since curse gives you late game pressure and can break some important holes mid game. Utility lax of course loves the support and forces a ton of mons to take damage after losing lefties. Wish on these teams is so awesome cuz you usually keep 2+ mons for death fodder after they get really low. If this happens, you can toss up a wish, sac 1 mon, then bring in the other low health Mon to get the wish (gen 3 wish mechanics baby!!!). This is super nice for trying to setup ludi or curselax sweeps late since they can hit their checks earlier and go for it again even after getting knocked low. I only put this whole essay here cuz BKC mentioned looking for new teams to put lax on and these balance teams without a dedicated trapper are an unusual place to find Snorlax.

I think where lax really shines is in draft league, because there it'll only be dealing with sand for one or two games, you can use the normally not great spinners a lot more effectively, and in general the lower power level makes it hard to kill. I used it in a draft league alongside armaldo and sandslash for hazard removal and curse sets could snowball out of control quickly. It's a much better mon when it's not getting chipped by anything, with it several times winning after tanking hits it wouldn't have survived if the usual chip factors were in play, such as camerupt explosion with+1 defense and band Hitmonlee brick break with +2 defense.

Fighting-types became much more of a threat this Generation, what with Focus Punch being a fairly common move, along with Reversal and even Brick Break; Snorlax no longer has effectively zero weaknesses, like he did in RBY and GSC.
His lack of speed means he might have to take two hits, and EVs replacing stat Exp. prevents him from having perfect bulk - and Normal STAB isn't as good as it once was, with common Steel-types Skarmory and Metagross and Jirachi, and Rock-type Tyranitar, resisting it. He doesn't have Lovely Kiss anymore, either. Gengar is a decent counter, too, now being immune to both Body Slam and Earthquake thanks to Levitate, forcing Snorlax to use Shadow Ball to get past him - which means missing out on a more useful move, like Sleep Talk or Belly Drum.
Oh, and Sleep Talk can no longer chain Rests, so if Snorlax is running Rest Talk that's a definite nerf from GSC.
Choice Band is also detrimental, powering up attacks that target his lower Defence, which in addition to the lack of stat Exp means he'll be taking a lot more damage than before.
