This is called chanson française done right.
Used to be a standard in France. Not so rare today but not so common either.
Something few people outside of France seem to notice is that she wrote the song on her own, in the tradition of the greatest French singers who were also great lyricists. No wonder that she lives the whole song it as if she was singing it from the deepest depths of her soul: she is.

For those who don't understand French :
That's the story of "someonone" who cannot believe in her dreams and who needs the support of everyone around her. That can be the singer herself because she says "this black-eyed woman and her crazy dream". Maybe her crazy dream was to win Eurovision song contest ? We don't know. She just "wants to write story that hurt people in their heart and soul". And Barbara Pravi wrote the lyrics and the music.
She is full of scars, she barely not exists. Sometimes, she doesn't like herself. She needs people to look at her to feel better.
She just used to stand in front of people and do what she does the best : singing, be nude in front of everyone who's staring at her at this particular moment. She exists at this right moment because people make her existing.
Is she better than another singer ? No. But the difference is there : she gives everything, always. She puts everything she has inside her on the floor.
Well, that's the story of someone who doesn't trust herself but when she's making her thing, everything is ok.
And so, what happens when the lights shut off ? Is she continuing to exist ? Her voice continues in our head, her story too. But what about her ?

Me, what I want, it’s writing stories that reach you
    It’s all (nothing more)

There I am even if bare naked, I am scared
Yes, there I am in the noise, in silence
Look at me or at least what’s left
Look at me before I start hating myself
What can I tell you that another girl’s lips won’t tell you
It’s not much but me, everything that I have
I am putting it right here (in front of everyone’s eyes)
Voilà, voilà, voilà, voilà this is who I am
There I am even if bare naked, it’s over
This is my face, my shout(cry)
    There I am, too bad
Voilà, voilà, voilà, voilà, right here
    Me, My dream, my desire
How I die, how I laugh
There I am in the noise and in the silence
Don’t leave me, I beg you, stay longer
It might not save me, no
But I don’t know how to do it without you
Love me, the way you love a friend who’s leaving forever
I want people to love me
Because I, I don’t really know how to love myself
Voilà, voilà, voilà, voilà, this is who I am
There I am even if bare naked, it’s over
There I am in the noise and in fury too
Look at me finally, and my eyes, my hands
Everything that I have is right here
    It’s my face, it’s my shout(cry)
Voilà, there I go, voilà, there I go, voilà
    Voilà, voilà, voilà ladadidada, ladadidada

To me this was one of the highlights of Eurovision of the past decade. I love it when a participating country just says "no circus acts, we are just going to focus everything on a beautiful song". That was Portugal in 2017, and France in 2021.
Conchita Wurst was that too in a way. Sure, you've got a bearded man doing a drag act, but it was so minimalistic, and everything was focused on a frankly stellar musical performance. "Rise Like A Phoenix" is also a modern Eurovision classic and certified banger, with or without the drag act.

A truly beautiful song. It reminds me so much of why my dear late husband and I loved the amazing country of France so much.
We were all ready to move to live there, having bought the most wonderful house, high up in the mountains of the Auvergne. It was simple, needing much doing to it, but it always felt like home whenever we visited. It was our safe place.
Tragically, just weeks before we were due to move, our beloved and beautiful 11 year old Granddaughter died suddenly of a cerebral aneurysm. There was no warning, no prior symptoms. One minute she was so happy on holiday with my daughter her Mommy, son in law, her Daddy and her younger sibling. The next she put her hand to the back of her neck and said “ouch Daddy that hurt”, and collapsed, and never regained conscientiousness. We turned off the life support machines the next day.
Our hearts will remain heartbroken forever. We will always miss that smart, funny, beautiful, gifted child who I was so privileged to be known by her as Nanna, and my dear late husband, Grandpa. But our dream to move to France ended that day, as we could not leave our daughter and her family with their grief to cope.
Since then my husband of 43 years died suddenly of pancreatic cancer. That wonderful man never recovered from his heartbreak at the loss of our Princess. I miss them both so very, very much. I always will.
So to hear this song, with its incredible lyrics, tune and the voices that have sung it, I will always be reminded of the things that I have been blessed with in my very long life.
Despite my deep sadness at the loss of my sweet granddaughter to whom I was so close, and my husband who I know loved me unconditionally for so many years, this song will remind me of their love for me, their beauty of soul, and the beauty of that incredible country, France.

This is not a dig on Eurovision contributions in English, but you can see this song written by the person performing it in her native language has a very visceral connection to the singer and you can feel her passion - that is not something you usually get with songs written in English for people whose native language is not English.

    • @WennAde
