For those who remember, "This bicentennial minute is brought to you by..." Ernie recorded this one line that ran multiple times every night in primetime for a year. Not sure if it's true, but apparently this one line earned him 1 million dollars in, back in 1976. Perhaps the best V.O. artist of all time.
Well.... I see I wasn't the only Ghoulardi fan. When we had a house trailer back in the day in the western part of Lake Erie we used to watch Ghoulardi on Friday nights out of a Cleveland TV station. Turn Blue ratfinks!
One of my favorite things about the internet is now that I'm grown up I can go back and learn about these things and people that were ephemeral parts of my childhood. I saw an episode of Animaniacs recently ("Guardin' the Garden") that had an intro voiceover that I immediately recognized as "that ABC promo guy" (they even made a joke about it). Ernie Anderson is probably my favorite V/O guy ever, but it's something I never would have thought about without youtube or the internet.
In their time, there were two voices who were totally identified with their networks: Ernie Anderson and ABC, and Danny Dark at NBC. Both gone, but not forgotten.
He was the announcer on The Carol Burnett Show. When Carol Burnett did her "lights up in the audience" she would introduce him like he was a celebrity, but she would never elaborate on who he was or what he did. She would just say, "We have Ernie Anderson in the audience. Stand up Ernie." He would stand up and wave and that was it. Cleveland fans got it. His face was famous to us. I did see him in one skit that Carol did, and I don't know if he was in any others.
A true genius. Kids... Listen, watch and learn from this man innovation and originality. That doesn't mean copy, that means just observe and apply to your own.
Loved That clip!! Thanks so much for uploading! I never knew that guys name. I always remembered my local newsman ( during an update) mocking Mr Anderson (1985) Now back to Hollywood Wives! On ABC. Now I'am doing v/o work. Fr. Charlie Vandyke had been my mentor for years!! (American top 40 guest host fame) and Casey Kasem did his share in NBC!
Even as kids in the early 60's, we recognized that Ernie Anderson had something special--and slightly off kilter--as he hosted lousy, late-night horror films in a weird characterization known as Ghoulardi--a bit he invented that both thrilled the young and scandalized the staid public of Cleveland, Ohio. People such as Elvira, mistress of the night, owe a great deal to him.
@Oona Craig He was irreverent. I remember his Captain Penny imitation and his reference to "Dorty!". My family left Cleveland before the s**t hit the fan regarding Ms. Fuldheim.
@Oona Craig Dorothy did no such thing. She was cool with it. Ernie said so. After Ernie left town, the Ghoul goofed on her for the next 30 plus years, and she didn't say or do a thing about it. Mike Douglas on the other hand was very ass hurt about it.
Imagine Ernie Anderson appearing on another network where Danny Dark does voiceovers! If you remember Ernie Anderson getting interviewed on another show back around the same time period, he described Danny Dark saying 'The Loooooove Boat' as "close, but no cigar".
is it weird that my love of PT Anderson films made me want to know tons more about Ghoulardi? And now I know for sure that Ernie Anderson was the fuckin' MAN?
Hmmm. I always thought that Captain Penny was the one who moonlighted as the Indians' PA announcer. Ron Penfound was Captain Penny's name. Did you know that Ron Penfound appeared in an episode of The Rifleman?
Ernie Anderson as Ghoulardi. Hosting Friday night horror movies as I grew up in Cleveland. Blowing up model cars with firecrackers. "Stay sick and turn blue, Ghoulardi loves you". Thanks Ernie!!!!!!
One of the greatest voices we'll ever be graced to hear! The voice of my childhood!
I had forgotten how much I loved him. When I hear his voice,I feel like I'm in the family room watching TV with my parents.
The King of Cleveland late night horror show hosts!
I was really hoping to hear some Ghoulardi. But, I know he left that life behind when he left Cleveland. Turn Blue!!!
Hey Group! Cool it with the Boom-Booms ova deh!
What a wonderful video! Look at his enthusiasm and the pride he took in his work. The likes of Ernie Anderson won't happen by again.
Clevelanders of the early 1960s remember Ernie as Ghoulardi, the late Friday night monster movie host on WJW-TV
Did have a great voice but he will always be the legendary Ghoulardi.
On Friday nights, us 12 and 13 year olds finally had a reason to stay up late! Loved Ghoulardi!...We cooled it with the Boom Booms;-)

Ernie was the original ghoul on channel 8 in cleveland. What great memories
He was Ghoulardi. The Ghoul came afterwards, in the 1970’s.
Like to hear him do these as Ghoulardi!!!
After all these years, I finally see the face to the voice
Ahhhhhh Group..It's GHOULARDI...OVADAY!!!
As I kid of the 80s, I must've heard his voice thousands of times as he introduced shows like Street Hawk and Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors.
I loved watching Ghoulardi!!!

Letterman had greatness sitting there. Ernie was such a sweet, humble cat in interviews. Such a voice and delivery.

He and Dick Tufeld. Those great TV voices we took for granted.

I remember when he hosted ERNIE's Place, a daytime movie show . This was before GHOULARDI .
The man behind the voice another of the great ones gone

ABC's Voice!! OWNED!!
Imagine Ernie Anderson appearing on another network where Danny Dark does voiceovers! If you remember Ernie Anderson getting interviewed on another show back around the same time period, he described Danny Dark saying 'The Loooooove Boat' as "close, but no cigar".
They should have given him his own mic on the desk., instead of trying to use one floating. Huge difference ...
In 1995 Dave would hire Alan Kalter as his announcer on The Late Show, who had a very similar voice to Ernie Anderson.
one of the greats
The Loooove Boat
Could you imagine Ernie doing voiceovers for "Legend of the Seeker" trailers?
One of those jobs that's like hitting the lotto every day
is it weird that my love of PT Anderson films made me want to know tons more about Ghoulardi? And now I know for sure that Ernie Anderson was the fuckin' MAN?
Genuis
His V/O always went,"Parental Discression is Advised.
Turn blue, knlfs!
this is fucking unbelievable
no audio !
What? Ernie forgot to wear his white Pollock socks!
Hmmm. I always thought that Captain Penny was the one who moonlighted as the Indians' PA announcer. Ron Penfound was Captain Penny's name. Did you know that Ron Penfound appeared in an episode of The Rifleman?
-and did you know Ernie Anderson was in a 1964 episode of Gunsmoke?(Chuckle!)
And then I swear a lot. Usually right about in there.
Too bad Ernie couldn't be around to do promos for his son's films. :(
PT Andersons dad...
1;13 WarmUps
Very rude of him to ask the guy to go to work.
Ernie Anderson as Ghoulardi. Hosting Friday night horror movies as I grew up in Cleveland. Blowing up model cars with firecrackers. "Stay sick and turn blue, Ghoulardi loves you". Thanks Ernie!!!!!!
