  • Dave had guested on Tom Snyder's Tomorrow Show on Monday, September 22, 1980. At the time, Dave's morning show hadn't yet been cancelled. But the following Friday, September 26, NBC officially announced that it was history, its last show to be a month away.
Monday, September 29, was the first morning show since the cancellation was announced, and Dave's first guest (not counting Chuck the Human Weasel) was Tom Snyder. It was towards the end of the two segments when Tom briefly addressed the cancellation.
The Tomorrow Show segment with Dave is available here:

From what I read in interviews, Letterman really looked up to Tom Snyder. Tom is an icon in honest interviews. I miss him and his view of the world in so many aspects . So rare these days. RIP dude! So entertaining!!

It's good to know that when this was broadcast, Dave's morning show hadn't yet been cancelled. I thought he was doing the show in his basement. :-)

Snyder was fantastic. He didn't do "interviews," he had conversations. This was a pivotal point for Snyder, NBC had brought in a live audience for "Tomorrow" and was now saddling him with Rona Barrett. It was a disaster and ruined the show. Less than two years after this appearance, Letterman had Snyder's late night slot and Snyder began a two year stint doing the 5pm news on WABC-TV in New York.

Before there was Art Bell Tom was my late night portal into offbeat topics and guests. I saw the first episode of the Tomorrow show. He was even portrayed by Dan Akroyd on SNL back in those days which indicated that those folks were watching his show as well back then, His cable show was alright but seemed more mainstream and not as interesting.

It's funny that Dave replaced Tom, then Dave hired Tom to follow him on the 12:35 am CBS show, The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder. Then that show went on to be hosted by Craig Kilborn, Craig Ferguson, and now James Corden.

"Production Values," what are you, 150 years old? Production hasn't been relevant for at least one generation of TV and video content creators. Get over it.
