Dave was such a natural. Thanks for sharing.
Letterman introducing Leno on The Tonight Show, ironic
"Please, don't blame Conan."
Letterman was extremely loyal to Leno and played a huge part in helping Leno's career take off.
@@siggylloyd3566 LOL! For Godsakes...please...don't blame Conan.
It’s like an alternate reality lol
guys….nobody IS blaming Conan
This is great to see. Always really grateful to see vintage Dave, Jay, and Steve Goodman. Thanks for sharing!
A treat to see Ed McMahon on when Carson was off. In most cases, especially by the 80s, when Johnny took the night off so did Ed.
I only remember that happening once when Leno was the permanent guest host and that was when Jay was called in at the last minute to sub because Carson couldn’t do the show (as opposed to one of his regular - and frequent - nights off). I remember that Ed’s intro of Jay was very different from his intro of Johnny; he didn’t stretch out the “Heeeeere’s” at all, like Doc did when he was doing the intros.
Maybe they went bowling on their night off 😂
@@jaredjlinden I’d love to see that!
@@jaredjlinden There was an occasion or two when there was an "alleged" "Death Threat" made against Johnny (likely by Jay's then manager...LOL) where he "called off."
Ed also used to be off frequently on Johnny’s nights, especially once Star Search began. Reportedly Mr. Carson got tired of it and sent word to Ed that he either needed to make Tonight his top priority or else move on, and Ed quickly fell in line, matching his schedule with Johnny’s.
Thanks for posting this. I remember well Dave's guest hosting stints on the Tonight Show from my college years. Between 1979 and 1981 Dave guest hosted 51 times, in addition to making frequent guest appearances with Johnny and hosting his own short-lived morning talk show on NBC during the summer of 1980. It's a pity there aren't more clips of Dave's Tonight Show hosting appearances and his morning show online. On a side note, this may have been Jay's last Tonight Show appearance until around 1986, as he wasn't asked back for some time. Fortunately for him, Dave had him as a guest on Light Night many times in the early '80s.
Diahann Carroll was gorgeous.
Indeed
7:03 David Letterman, hosting the Tonight Show, introduces Jay Leno. Just think about that bizarro occurrence.
I love seeing this, thanks for posting! Ah, the good old days.
That end credits theme feels more Maynard Ferguson than big-band.
The closest Dave has gotten to hosting the Tonight Show
And strangely, Leno, who was the guest, took over.
steve goodman died younger than I am right now and he looks so much older than I do right now. Its very interesting how people aging has changed over the years
24:00 she said the date the proper way
Aw, Steve Goodman! The best!
George Gobel is seen on the couch when Jay enters and shakes hands with everyone.
Modified the description. :-)
7:14 Dave introduces Jay. How odd, eh?
He only did it 33 times on Late Night.
13:08 "So Jay, what's needling ya, riding at ya, eatin' at ya?........."
Leno's chin grew first and the rest of his face is catching up, even now.
nice!😃
Steve Goodman!!! 18:05
Two things, I would love to know what Ed was saying to Dave after the show. Also, does anyone know what that musical piece is that is used at the close of the show? Shazam can't figure it out.
Jay Leno, forever known as a corporate yesman and backstabber of friends.
Green Giant Broccoli in Cheese Sauce 15:36
24:45 Did Fred DeCordova smack Dave in the ... ?
He had to smack him there, given Dave's infamously bad back. ha!
@@modernretroradio993 I am of the same thinking. LOL. This was wayyyy before the age of "Political Correctness" AND Dave's bad back.
Good stuff. A shame we can't just dial up all of Dave's Tonight Show episodes online.
Commented for the algorithm.
You and the algorithm are such jokes. 🙄
I love leno, news humor without the divisiveness
Its clear why he retired when he did
he simply wasnt willing to play the game colbert and fallon and kimmel are
no way was Leno the guest...
fascinating what they used to think was funny.
I know, right!
you had to find something until gen z to laugh at
Back then already, Jay Leno was ZERO funny!
wym? Leno only became corny once he started hosting TNS. but if you watch his stuff before he became mainstream, he’s hilarious. i’m a big Letterman guy but Leno deserves praises. his monologues were brilliant
