  • This organic chemistry video tutorial provides a basic introduction into the side chain reactions of benzene. These include free radical bromination at the benzylic position, E2 elimination to form styrene, SN2 reactions to form alcohols, nitriles, and amines, side chain oxidation using KMnO4 and H2CrO4 plus a few other reactions.

    At 3 minutes, does this reaction also work with a secondary bromide instead of the primary bromide? Or do you have to use a different reaction to substitute a secondary bromide with a amine-group?

      A secondary bromide cannot exist stably, so we could actually not perform this reaction of secondary bromide..
