I've been playing blues and rock music for nearly 40 years, yet only discovered Sister Rosetta recently. I can't believe how ahead of her time she is. Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry , Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley can all eat their hearts out. This woman deserves more credit for inventing Rock and Roll than any of them.

All those you mentioned already loved her. So much of the "British Invasion" and beyond were huge fans of American Gospel and Blues and many started doing covers.
And you are so right. This music hits so hard even today, and Sister Rosetta doesn't get the mainstream recognition she deserves! ❤

All the greats knew Sister. Elvis, Johnny Cash,The Stones, JiniHedticks -- and when Interviewed, like Chuck Berry they gave her credit for the inspiration foreverything they did. It's just a factor of bull shit media that she didn't get the credit she obviously should have when the other blues and rock great MEN were finally getting their due. But there's nobody to blame except Sister that she refused to address her diabetes until it was too late and she died WAAAAY too soon.😭

Saludos.

When you represent someone and being a king, you supposed to represent like your family?
I talk about school children and when they go to school. And they cut the food. Bring home bad grades. You representing your mother and father. If you don't know what that mean, ask your mother and father. We don't act like that and that would Kingdom. And that's why I apologize to my wife, the other day for my behavior but she understood when you have been prosecuted. Sometimes you act, but I know I have to represent her when I'm not feeling bad.👸🏻

I say sister Thorpe.back in the 1970, down In flordia no more than 20 people in a gym. I was amazed that the way she played gospel was based on real blues, but she made it gospel. She finished her first set came over and tried to sell me an album. I can't remember if I bought one but I think I did, because there was a sister Thorpe album at my aunts house and she had the record player. I new what she was playing on guitar was her own .

He proudly showed me his tooth crown that had a gold inlay guitar! My father saw him in San Antonio the next day in San Antonio and spent all the day after that live concert taking Lipscomb on a tour of the whole city -- including the multimedia presentation of a Mance Lipscomb documentary at the Institute of Texas Cultures that Mr.lipscomb did not even know existed.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and recording artist. A pioneer of twentieth-century music, Tharpe attained great popularity in the 1930s and 1940s with her gospel recordings that were a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and rhythmic/early rock accompaniment.

@@gyomen Thanks so much for the info. I've never used Piratebay before, but I'm a little leery of getting malware or virus. I tried searching but all that came up was a bunch of weird stepsister porn stuff.
I didn't search thoroughly though. I am going to consult with some of my more tech savvy friends on this. I do keep an older laptop around for more sketchy downloads. But 4gb's of Sister Rosetta makes it def. worth exploring further.
She did several albums with Apollo in the early 60's (I believe) that have some tracks that are similar in sound to the more free form and intense COGIC music of the late 20's. I was heavily interested in that style when I was first introduced to her. At that time the internet was not even thought of and I didn't know people who liked this music - so what seems obvious and easily accessible now was like a revelation to me then. The music worked- I learned a lot of the basic info on the Bible I know through it.
Back to topic --- if you know a more specific search term I can use please LMK. Either way thanks again -

I totally thought it was rocket 88 by jackie brenston / ike turner in 1951 ... but she has songs that sound more rock & roll a decade before that.

This is outstanding, Henk. However, you need to give a proper 'shout out' to Madam Marie Knight who sings the lower parts with Sister on Up Above My Head, Didn't It Rain and Precious Memories. They were always co-billed when they sang together.

In 2023….you can sing gospel as long as there ain’t no Gospel in it. And you slink and slither and tempt as hard as you can. Just a prediction.

This sounds great to me and I never never heard this before. This would sound good in church and it would get me jumping in shouting to Christ. I like the music loud and shouting.

Church is where 90% of popular singers got their start.

Apparently Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Buddy Holly spent many Sunday morning church services in Black churches for the music. Fitting that Whites back then were asked to sit in the back of the Black churches.

If any singer or guitarist wants to get a giant head start, learn how to play and sing a bunch of these songs, and you'll do well.
