This was when news journalism was a serious profession. I miss those times!

I was not quite a year old when Frank Reynolds died, and still a bit too young to remember Max Robinson, but I grew up watching Peter Jennings, and was very shocked when he passed. RIP to all three.

Frank Reynolds died when I was 5, Max Robinson (my mom's crush) died when I was 10. Peter Jennings was in season, but died in the 2000s. Barbara Walters is still hanging in there!

Thank you for posting this video and the background info about the three anchor concept that ABC tried. I was a member of the technical crew and this brought back some forgotten memories. Too bad it didn't last longer than it did.

I never lived through that era, but that looks like a great duo of journalists. Roone Arledge did a great job taking over ABC News.

Frank Reynolds got me hooked on watching national news way back then . . . used to love the way he signed off each night!

Very underrated who was overshadowed because of Cronkite, Rather, Jennings & Brokaw!!

I remember Frank Reynolds scolding his news gatherers/sources when they erroneously reported that James Brady was "dead" (moments after Reagan was shot - 3/30/81). When it was apparent that he wasn't, he was visibly upset and scoffed on air and said, "Get it right!"

This gives me chills every time I see this. ABC really was onto something special then; Arledge took a gamble and it was paying off beautifully. WNT was so fresh and innovative for back then they had every right to brag. Not long after this they started to pass NBC for 2nd.. that was HUGE for ABC News.

I remembered when this was the ABC World News Tonight that I watched when I was small. They abandoned this format once Frank Reynolds died and Max Robinson was let go (he would pass 5 years later) and when Peter Jennings was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005, he was hoping to come back with a clean bill of health. When that didn't happen, that was the end of the Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather era of network evening news.

Frank Reynolds died in 1983 from Bone Cancer, Max Robinson succumbed to AIDS on 12/20/1988 and Peter Jennings lost his battle to Lung Cancer in August, 2005.

Peter Jennings might still be alive today if he had not been so stupid and picked up those vile cancer sticks.

At the time, CBS's Walter Cronkite was DA KING. But I'm guessing - with Roone Arledge's innovative badassery - the ABC News main foursome (Jennings, Reynolds, Robinson and Walters) was starting to knock the most trusted man in America off his throne.

The Iranian Hostage Crisis and the Middle East were the events ABC News started gaining credibility. Peter Jennings covered these events and was in Munich during the Olympics. Ted Koppel anchored Nightline. In Washington, Frank Reynolds and Sam Donaldson covered the early years of the Reagan administration. NBC's David Brinkley brought loads of experience to ABC News, but Ronne Arledge knew how to market and sell a product.
Jennings, Brinkley, Koppel, Walters, Sawyer, and Donaldson. That's an impressive batters lineup.

Kurt Kauffman Frank Reynolds, Max Robinson and Peter Jennings took ABC's WTN to the top. Who knows? These three anchor vets are doing the news upstairs.
