Just want to thank you for the video its always nice to watch something before you do it, the only issue i had with the video is when puting the rods in the mechanism needs to be in a down and relaxed position to work not up. Thank you again it made the job faster and i also had time to get the lock working so extra bonus lol

Great video! the only thing that would be helpful is to remind people to make sure the retainer clips open from the top, because they can rotate and end up being upside down which will not allow the trunk to stay closed. And whoever said it the to be in a down position instead of open, that would depend if you have the tailgate closed or open. If it's closed, it needs to be how you said, in an open position. I'll be putting my own video fixing my tailgate and your video helped me!
Thanks for the video you pointed out things other videos did not now the only thing I need to know is the kind of bolts used to secure the cover I don't have them 2 long ones and trying to find them is a pain when you don t know what to call them lol
If anyone cannot locate the two torch bolts that hold the bezel in place, simply retrhread the old M6 speed clips to 1/4-20 coarse. This can be done by removing the clips and putting them into a pair of vice grips or vice if you own one. Tap the new threads slowly with lubricant as the new 1/4-20 bolt will almost exceed the wall thickness of the speed clip. Once it’s tapped you will need your choice of drive type( I just used a Phillips #3) bolt in a 3” length.
Thank you for this! I almost tried it myself, but took it to a trusted body shop instead. Since the replacement (Dorman, also. I did get GM clips for the rods as recommended by some). my tailgate does not lock. The guys at the shop say it's because it is not a genuine part. Has anyone else had this issue, and is there a fix for it instead of getting a new part? I have not found a video specific to the lock.I posted the same question on another video and he suggested the locking lever may be bent. Thank you.

His video shows what others don't. The C shaped metal piece on the right side needs to be pushed down. Otherwise the handle doesn't engage. 👌 )))) 2005 2500 Avi LT ((((

I get how to fix and have the new part. My problem is how do I get the the tailgate down? It's an Avalanche with the bed covers on. Is there a way to get the back panel off the bed without being able to open the tailgate? I am considering pulling out the wall to the bed, crawling in from the back seat to the tailgate and trying to unlock the panel from inside the bed. Any other ideas? Thanks!
On mine I was able to reach my finger under the handle with a screw driver and pull the latch spring part over, the part you want to pull over is located on the left side under the handle. I will make a video 2morr showing how I do it and post it to my channel.

How the hale do you get the first 2 bolts out that are on the inside of the tailgate when the handle is broken so at least on my truck I can't get past your first step...
I Have a video up showing how to open it when handle is broben. Please subscribe & like and share if haven't already and check out our other helpful videos
or you can go in your trunk from the inside and remove the screws on the outside to take the cover off. Then you can see the rods if you pull on the right one it opened the tailgate for me. I'm just having a problem getting the rods back in correctly so that the new one works. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong yet.
I totally agree. But if it's never going to show or hurt anything, if it makes the next time easier, I don't have an issue with it...but you should at least do a nice job and make it look nice like someone was being professional about it.
I thought I could get it out without cutting. Tried for a good 5 min. But apparently there’s a difference in model year or if it has the plastic cladding. I scored mine with a utility knife and it broke off clean with some pliers.

Just a tip. I used masking tape to hold the two bars up until I could manipulate them into the plastic clips they clip into. Worked like a charm.

Not a bad video. But you dont have to cut. You can work the assembly out to the right.

How do u slide it out to the right? The arm that controls lock/unlock keeps getting caught up in the assembly.
