- When learning how to box, whether you are a beginner boxer or more experienced, it is important that you recognise that you are on a learning curve. In this video I talk you through my observations as a boxing coach in respect of developing boxers, my own experience as a boxer and I also provide you with 6 tips to make the process of learning how to box more efficient and effective.
As a boxing coach, seeing ‘overnight successes’ is really quite rare. In fact, only with 2 boxers in all that time did they go from being the classic ‘beginner boxer’ to an above average boxer in a short space of time.
There are many variables when learning how to box. The environment, the learning style of the boxer, the boxing coaching approach. Usually it takes me around 6-12 months to take an absolute beginner boxer and make them ready for a competitive boxing match.
And the learning curve is not a smooth, gradual curve over short periods - it is only smooth over a longer period. You will have bad days, days that you feel you have gotten worse as a boxer…but this is entirely natural. So be prepared for that and remain positive.
Some Tips to make your boxing learning curve as efficient as possible
1. Learn by doing. Competitor or fitness, boxing drills, drills, drills! It's a skills game. If you are looking to compete, then plenty of sparring when you are ready is also key
2. It's easy to be hyper-critical of yourself. Don't. Learning boxing skills is not easy - the the curve is not smooth!
3. Set goals. Have a long term goal, but set short term ones too. You need small wins on your boxing journey.
4. Measure progress. Video yourself doing some boxing skills, shadow boxing etc. A month later after working more drills, video yourself again and compare.
5. It’s important to aim high, but it’s just as important to credit your improvement. So, look at where you have come from. Recognise small improvements and give yourself credit for it.
6. Expect to have boxing training sessions that just don't 'click'. You will get better, those sessions often hide real improvement. Try your best to make your boxing training session great.

absolutly amazing instructions. Some of the best I've found. Thank you
This is a great discussion. First off, I’m 37 and have just recently started boxing/kickboxing primarily as a fitness regimen. I’m an older dude so not particularly interested in getting in the ring competitively, but I do very much want to improve. Your videos are consistently insightful, clear, and very beneficial. Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of experience!
Thank you coach.
I so much love Your channel and tips. I've tried to teach some boxing for people who don't want to compete and Your videos are very motivating for me. Thank You very much
.
I thought this was exceptional advice. I coached boxing for many years in the U.S. Navy and keeping fighters at the right balance of humility but without becoming discouraged at the slow pace of improvement was one of the biggest challenges. I suppose that is a life lesson all as well. The only thing I'll add, and I would be very interested in Coach Sands' thoughts on the subject, is a strategy I came to believe in. It really applies after learning the fundamentals, as you are trying to help a boxer progress from beginner to intermediate or from intermediate to advanced. My thought was to access what were the fighter's relative talents and natural strengths and work on making those truly exceptional versus primarily focusing on improving their weaknesses. It's not that you never work on those weaker areas but more of their training (perhaps 75%) would be devoted to becoming really excellent at what they naturally did well or were their physical gifts (hand speed, foot speed, endurance, power, reach, specific punches, movement, etc). I would then try to help them develop a boxing style that utilized those strengths.
A lot of this is about confidence, which comes from capability. Love ur saying!
My favourite channel to learn boxing. Thanks to an author. Regards from Poland.
Thank you Artur
Thanks Fran, really good content, from Germany.

Hi Fran, I've just come across your channel and really like considered way you approach things. I am just about to attend my L1 ABAE Coaching Course and your videos are an excellent reference.
Hello Andy. Great stuff mate. I'm sure you'll enjoy your course, they tend to be spot on. And well done for taking on the role, really important that people like you get involved in bringing on the boxers - you'll love it :-)
@@myboxingcoach thanks for the encouraging support Fran it's really appreciated!.
Was that paul ingle from scarborough? He was an AWESOME boxer
Yes mate. He was outstanding, but so humble and friendly...always wearing a smile. Always refreshing in a game when people are often overly serious!
Great video thank s a lot. :D
MAN, This Is GOOD!😁👀💪💪👊👊👍
I recently started boxing and your videos have been a great help Mr.Sands ,footwork in particular, thank you. I have a dillema though. I am right handed and train orthodox but today I tried southpaw stance and realized my left cross is much more faster than my right cross. Hip rotation, weight transfer is considerably more natural. Slower right jab though. Is this something common in boxing? Thanks you for amazing videos and best regards from Turkey.
Hi there. Thank you for your comment and question. Go with it. If you feel comfortable then give it a try. If you can operate out of both stances that's a positive as long as you develop the understanding of the tactics.
Thanks you for the reply Coach.
When are your sessions? I would love to come down. I'm based on West Yorkshire though.
Not a single dislike that is great
Cheers Jacob. 2 dislikes now...as a great man once said "Can't please all the people all the time."
Hey Fran! How do you deal with bad eyesight? I see that you have glasses. I personally have a hard time seeing about a foot past my face. I train with contacts in, but take them out during sparring. Should I just completely take them out during sessions to get used to the blindness factor?
Brandon Roberts I would recommend purchasing some daily lenses so that if they get knocked out it’s not a major issue. I did this and it was well worth the investment.
I don't wear my glasses so I can't see how rubbish my shadow boxing is presently. 🥸
Top video coach !! good advice ' how about more stories from wen you were a young lad atb pal
Cheers mate, will do that.
Hello coach! I don't know if you answered this question already in another video, but how often should an amateur boxer train to learn effectively? Is it just "the more the better"?
Hey there. For a novice/intermediate amateur, 3 times per week for 60-90 minutes plus 2 runs per week. This is a general rule and is adequate for 3 rounds of boxing.
@@myboxingcoach thank you so much for finding the time to answer my question!
Why isn't this guy coaching the pros!!!
Hello Fran, would you make a video or give an advice here on where to look at when you’re boxing? Some people says eyes, some say shoulder, some says glove, some say chest? Thank you coach
No Added Sugar look for body movement(hands, shoulde, muscle flexing) never look in the eyes you're reaction will be slower and you'll get caught.
That's on my list actually...will get onto it.
Average Joe thanks man, cause ive been doing my research on google about it, and theres too many answers.
Fran Sands looking forward for the video, notification on. Thanks again for all the knowledge by your demonstration and the explanation about the beauty of boxing all this time.
I love this man but I couldn't help but notice that he looks like an old, bald, Tom Holland.
😂😂 same here
The historian or Spider-Man?
That idea of a coach being bored with his/her overly self-critical student was a real light bulb moment. Thank you.
Excellent tips coach. You're a gem.
Hey coach your knowledge in the art of boxing is great and you are helping so many people with your advice. I also thank you very much. I started boxing at the age of 30 and my question is do you believe at that age you can still achieve greatness and go to the top. I believe even with age as you stated hard work does pay off. So if you could get back to me on that question I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you
Set your goals and go and achieve them. You will find your level but I can guarantee that if you set challenges you will grow and become better.
Paul Ingle fought Naseem Hamad😧
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen very personal and truthful, the beauty of boxing is you never stop discovering you the man coach
Very good talk any young lad who wants to box should come and see you I wish I was 45 years younger lol atb from North wales
Cheers John, nice comment mate and much appreciated
Great insights coach!
Great stuff Fran. Really liked this video just on the reality of the improvement curve. Helped level set my expectations, as I’d just had a couple bad days, and sometimes it seems like I’m not getting anywhere. Couple good nuggets like the bad days, learning the skills takes time, and comparing yourself to 6 months ago. Great insights.
From across the pond.
I always love it when you sit down and tell your stories. It's like being down the pub with ya mates. 🙂🍺
great advice on boxing, also applies to life itself
Great advice for life in general! Great stuff
I hope none dislike this video cause this video is spot on !

Really great video, genuine and inspiring- not to be too much, but thanks
Love what you said about not beating yourself up. I’m my worst critic when it comes to sparring.

I watch all your videos and I've gotta say this is one of the best!!
I love how the videos are based on wisdom.

People with ADHD
The legend himself!
Just the simple things really, but we all forget just how much importance they have ....overly critical, we all do it. Compare yourself to how you started, brilliant Fran, something everyone should take from any subject or exercise in life.
Thanks Kevin
It gets boring when the coach keeps thinking he's rambling on.. But is infact giving great insight & thought. Love your honesty👊🏻
I appreciate that, thank you
Appreciate the positive reinforcement, I am very overcritical of my development I will keep that in mind👍🏽👍🏽
Good :-)
Thank you Fran. I really needed this video - very encouraging. Came home last night after a serious beating in sparring - this video set my mind straight. Thanks!
That's great Bjorn. It's important to take the positives, glad that it's given you some perspective and a lift :-)
I’m sure you were a good boxer, but you are a great teacher. Thanks for all of your hard work.

Excellent video Fran. You're a brilliant coach!
Thank you Nicholas, that's very kind.
Thanks Fran. Loads of great advice as always.
You're welcome mate, thanks for your comment.
Hi fran
What would be your advice to a boxer who is great on his feet makes great angles but can be gun shy doesn’t let his hands go when the opportunity arises
What would you drill with him or say to him ?
I'd push him to create the situation rather that wait. Mixing up feints and punches. So feint or jab (trigger), do a layback or use his smart feet then always, always look to fire. Once he 'gets' that things will open up for him. Can be difficult overcoming it so a bit of persistence is required.
Fran Sands thanks pal will do I’ll let you know how we get on
What a great coach .love the videos
Thank you
This video was comfy
:-)
Never a bore coach, thank you so much. Большой спасибо
