    You got me thinking, "Huh... maybe that's why I never finish my large sketchbooks." I finish my small ones no problem, but I struggle with my large ones. Instead, my large sketchbooks that were intended for more detailed pieces become just occasional doodles and practice, and my small sketchbooks that were intended for occasional doodles and practice became detailed pieces. Anyways, great video! Super relatable

      Ohhh I use Krylon Low Odour Clear varnish. It isn’t too shiny which I like, but one con is that the sprayer is weird (it sometimes lets out big spurts of varnish that I have to wipe off)

    Honestly whatever makes you happy and makes you want to draw you should just do it without explaining yourself. Buying a new sketchbook even though you haven't finished yours, getting new art supplies to spark your interests, even a change in your desk or art space will make a Huge difference. Also yesss make it a sticker 😍😍

    I love how excited you are! I think you're right that you need a small notebook for a go-to default practice. I definitely would encourage you, though, to keep the other one in mind. There may be times when you do want to do a larger piece, and #4 will still be there for you. #4.5 is clearly really important for you and I'm so glad you have it! But you might find that having #4.5 available to meet these needs will free up a part of you that sometimes also wants large format dreams.
    It sounds to me like you want to dream those large format dreams. You maybe just didn't realize they were not a replacement for the small format expressions that had already become fundamental to your being. You don't have to full-on abandon the large notebook. You just need to respect that it can't meet all your needs.

    • @thelastcoffeebean
      @thelastcoffeebean  2 года назад +1

      Thank you so much for your comment! 🧡 I definitely agree with you, I sometimes LOVE working large scale, but for practice and fun stuff I like sticking to paper less than 8x10. I think if I ever want to draw something big, I’d use #4, OR I’d try out something different like Canvas or watercolour paper! 🙌🏼

    • @Zephlett
      @Zephlett 2 года назад

      Absolutely. You bought the larger format sketchbook for a reason. I think it's great that you realized it isn't everything you need, but that doesn't mean it's nothing.
      Sometimes the storytelling norms of our culture push us to look for decisive answers that are the be-all-end-all. You watch these videos and think you have to reach a conclusive answer every time you art about a problem. But as you noticed recently, you can get good things out of an experience without that being a final solution. Maybe instead of saying this feels nice I'm going to do this same thing forever, we could try this feels nice and I'll add it to my repertoire occasionally.

    IDK if you will see this; but I am an artist for work as well and I was struggling the first few years with art block. I realized something though and maybe you will notice tooo-
    When I have an art block it is hard not to be upset at myself for being unproductive. I then realized though, usually when I rest and come back to it, my art has improved a LOT.
    Then I thought about it-
    When a battery is 100%, and doubles in size, the 100% is actually 50%. That means that it needs X amount of time to charge up to 100% again. I think when we have art blocks, our skill is improving, and the "inability" to create is actually our selves now recalibrating and recharging a new amount, so that we can be incredible after the battery charge :)

    Keep the bigger book and work in it off and on through out the year. Maybe it won’t feel so daunting. I’ve got about 7 different sketchbooks going right now. They are for different things. One of them is my ‘Big Ass Book’ it has 300 pages. My goal is to eventually fill it. I have small ones I take everywhere with me. I also have ones I use to make more complete compositions and a couple of them are very specific subjects.
    Hey! most importantly is to step away from watching others’ social media! Because it makes you feel like you need to do what others are, you do your thing. Plus staying away from so much social media will help you stay original and not subconsciously stray from your own style. Keep up the awesome work, you’ve got great talent! Remember to create for yourself first, that’s what being an artist is all about!

    Best sketchbook advice I ever heard is that you do not need to start at the beginning of the sketchbook, and you do not have to go front to back in order. Just open and draw.
    Also, as someone who loves larger sketchbooks and struggles with smaller ones, I feel your pain. Having the wrong size kills the vibe.

  • @kajusuraj9621

    As someone who now finds any sketchbook that is smaller than an a4 to be too small, I completely understand in the completely opposite way lol.
    I'm currently trying to rush through all the a5s that I've collected so that I can collect a4s, b5s and a3s. (B5s are the perfect size for me but they're so hard to find as a size?? Like why they're so perfect lol)
    I wish I had a bigger table so that I could have a bound a3 because I hate spiral bindings... It would be a nightmare to use though 😂

    I love smaller sketchbooks too. I had a very huge one (as big as a laptop completely opened) and I didn't use it for months. I would have to do really big drawings which I would end up never finishing. I eventually found good use for it and that was the practice life drawing. But whenever I want to draw stuff just for me I prefer smaller pages as it just feels finished easier (and I tend to leave a lot of empyt spaces in general).

  • @aDricalua
    @aDricalua 2 года назад

    why do you charge so much to complete all the spaces and the drawings or pages all have to be good, can't you have a bad page?
    You can use the large sketchbook to sketch ideas, practice loose things or make it from a sample library of artistic materials, practice color mixing, train hatch, make a diary.
    How many grams is the paper of the new sketchbook?
    Good new sketch times!!!! Great new art!!!
    May I suggest drawing a boxer girl dog!!!!
    Love the pose of the girl and her sneaker!!!
    I try learn to draw but I make so much mistake that I end up doing holes in the paper of erasing so much ,and I'm heavy hand paper get a lot of marks and the watercolor I'm trying but is hard too, I try get some help in facebook group and have zero helps hauhahuahauahuh they said to try do i grafite before but I tried but don't get success , I did I think about 7 wrong wings .

  • @NosKryme

    I totally get abandoning sketchbooks due to their size. My comfort size is the Moleskine A6, due to the fact that I draw so much better on a smaller canvas, and I don't have the looming pressure of 'not using the most of my potential' since a smaller size is very forgiving.
    Just because you don't finish a sketchbook in one shot doesn't mean there is something wrong, or that you're being wasteful. That book will still be there for you to revisit in the future, and even if you never revisit it, always remember that you did use it. You stuck with it for a bit even when you weren't comfortable and ended up making some very pretty drawings regardless.
    A sketchbook isn't 'finished' when you finish the book, it's finished when YOU feel that your journey with the book is done, even if it means finishing ten pages.

      @@bugleaf9603 Personally I think the Moleskine sketchbook is kinda good but not my favourite! It’s not the best Paper quality wise for price, but I haven’t really experimented enough on the paper yet! I think it takes watercolours pretty well for my style, but it seems to dry too quick for some reason. the buckling is minimal tho which is good, and it DEFINITELY smudges graphite less than the illo sketchbook paper. It also has a tone to it so it isn’t pure white which takes time to get used to. Personally I think it’s overpriced, but the “aesthetic” (cover, strap, paper colour) makes it really pretty 👀✨
      I might make a review video for this sketchbook after I experiment some more with it first so that it’s better informed!

    I actually never really finished a sketchbook, because i would look back and absolutely hate the older pages, i just bought a new one even if i still have 35 pages left in my old one.
    It’s time for a new start either way :)

    i do love a small sketch book that I can take anywhere I go, but sometimes I just need more space. I have handful on sketchbooks on the go currently; I like some more than others. I still want to use them up because I bought them, and it would be a waste of paper. For the sketchbook I care less about, is the one I probably use the most since I normally just plan my actual art in there and use it for practice alone. I care less about how the pages look and I don't bother erasing/covering up bad sketches. It's nice to have a "dump book".

    I really understand this, i may try this as i have like you been struggling for about 6 months now and have only just got back into drawing, ive judt finished a painting for my friends bday of her puppy which feels amazing. I currently have a sketchbook just over a4 and i have been struggling with it for a while so as this same friend brought me an a6 sketchbook for my bday a few weeks ago i may use it as my new one so thankyou for this idea, sorry if i rambled ahah

    i also have this problem with my sketchbook. i like the size but i think it's the paper that annoys me alot,it's almost gray-ish like it's not pure white.
    i want to get a new sketchbook but i'm just scarred.

    It sounds like you’re putting too much pressure on yourself to make a picture perfect product. My sketchbooks end up filled up with sketches, doodles, nice pieces and total mistakes. But I do love new books.

    I did the same thing on my bday was thinking about and I felt bad but I wasn't gonna keep a sketchbook that long but then I had this small one I did in 16 day and I thought about that and I had artblock so I put a sticky note of the date I ended just incase I go back inside. and I was wasn't happy using an a school notebook sorry if that sounds weird but I was trying to break into art again when school was over so that's why and now I don't regret it. :)

    If the type of sketchbook you’re using is contributing to art block, that is a more than rational reason to abandon the book itself. Do not feel guilty about this decision.

    I too had to abandon my sketchbook Volume 4 because the paper wasn’t right and the whole vibe of the sketchbook was off even though there’s pieces in there that I do like, it just wasn’t working for me. I’m on sketchbook volume 4.5 now and I’m much much happier and look forward to working in it! Love the video 💕

    I can relate to this so much. I have the Moleskine A4 in red. I've had 9 pages left for about 6 months I think. Its causing me so much art block. I just hate the size of it! i already bought the new one which is a square Seawhites but i have guilt about not having finished the moleskine. My prior was the A5 moleskine and that was fine, there is just something about A4 books!

    I've been keeping 2 at once. I have a small square I bought for like 6 bucks and a large one the size of the big one you have. I use the small one when I go out or want a "junk" sketchbook. The larger one I use for thumbnails and for life practice. I use photos of family, youtubers, celebrities etc. It's been a really good system for me!
