    You are going through a lot of sponge before reaching the refugium. I don't think any food would reach it for shrimp to eat. But you will find your socks will last a lot longer. I would add maybe double the amount of bio balls or consider a liquid K3 moving bed filtration since it will not only do a great job of filtration, but also add a ton of oxygenation!

    Consider putting red root floaters in your refugium. They eat up all the nitrates. Mines been at 0 for weeks using them.

    Seatorch honeycomb filter socks are really good. They are a hybrid combining both the felt and mesh filter socks. They are what I used before moving over to the DD Clarisea filter roller. They don’t clock up as much as standard filter socks in my opinion. Still recommend a filter roller as the end goal because it takes all the fish waste out of the water column so it can’t continue to pollute the water. Ps sumps will always build detritus biofilm sludge like stuff . Magic foam erasers are great for cleaning the biofilm on the glass.

    Heya Kaity - the best thing I ever did for my sump was to use expanded Clay Balls also called Leca - I used 15L for like $10 but I should of purchase a bag full. Super cheap @ like $40 for like 50L bag. They need to be thoroughly washed but you will never find anything close to it in value for money and the amount you get. The level of biological filtration from them is insane. Call it thinking outside the box as you will never find them in an aquarium shop.

    🐥 Kaity, you are a natural on your aquarium visits now ... 👏👏👏 You did a wonderful job cleaning your sump ( long and fiddly work I am sure )
    Maybe when your new tank is stocked & planted you will benefit from using the floss in your sump to really polish the water.
    You could make a plastic sliding cover for sump, cutting around the sump piping, this will deaden the running water sound and save you money on heating the water ... 6⃣0⃣0⃣0⃣ Subs is truly amazing for your hard work ... Super well done 👍🏽👍🏽

  • @stevegee8010
    @stevegee8010 2 года назад +2

    You can 'instantly' cycle a tank if you use biomedia/water from an already established tank. Of course, you'd still introduce stock at a gradual rate.
    Cryptos would be good for a variety of colours and structures, just cut off the leaves as you plant them as usually they melt, then they should come back just fine.

  • @leem270
    @leem270 Год назад

    No wonder the floss was stopping the flow ha ha, Looks like you used the whole bag.
    Also i would remove all the sponges they will hold a lot of detritus which will end up rotting and causing nitrate and phosphate spikes unless your cleaning them frequently.

    Love your video’s I set up a Trigger 36” sump not as sophisticated as yours but I did do a refugium down there and it’s been quite successful for the life of me I could not tell you plant names I ordered an assortment of plants from Dustin ‘s plants store. They chose the plants. I added one of his 12” lights and it currently looks like a lush rain forest down there I only wish I could do that up in the tank ! Anyway nitrates are very low so I’m happy. I can’t quite get that crystal clear look in the water. I can’t run my filter sock in stages the way you did but I will be adding more filter blocks as you did here. I’d love to know how often you plan on cleaning those filter blocks. I’m guessing the socks are every week but not the blocks ?????

      @Kaityscichlids  2 года назад +1

      Thank you 😄 When you say filter blocks do you mean the Dymax ones I have for biological filtration? I think I'll probably clean them whenever they look like they've got a build up of dirt. They're pretty dirty because I didn't have the filter floss in at one point to catch the particles so I don't think they'll get that dirty so quickly in the future. I hope not anyway! That's also awesome to hear you had success with your refugium, hopefully mine will work out well too. I'm keen to put some shrimp in it

      I was wondering about the blue and green filter blocks/Pads How often do you think you will clean those. As it’s going to be tough to add and remove at least in my sump. I guess it’s a dumb question it’s always going to vary with fish stock and feeding habits. Lol I think I just answered my own question.
      LOVE YOUR VIDEO’s keep them coming. Your so clear and thoughtful I could never explain anything as nicely as you have.

  • @KoiBoy6

    Recommend removing all of the sponges. Every time they clog, it is going to just make a hot mess of the sump. The black and blue will collect so much over time that pulling them is going to release so much you will have to turn off the system, drain and clean the sump, and restart it. The refugium section may get a little waste/detritus, but shrimp will help. Ammano Shrimp will do better than ghost shrimp.

    hot tip #884
    molasses will expedite the growth of the good bacteria needed in your filter!
    on a microscopic level, the bacteria we are all trying to culture in our filters, requires the same simple sugars our cells do to reproduce!
    basically, the molasses is already in the exact form the bacteria needs to grow as fast as possible, glucosamine.
    other methods of seeding your bacteria culture need time to break down into the simple sugars for the bacteria to actually start consuming for its growth!
    hence why most cycle periods are between 7-14 days.
    my method has yielded results as fast as 36 hours.
    i use molasses with every tank i start.
    my total fish room volume is 35,000L (if i fill everything), just unloaded a 10x4x3ft tank which holds 3,280L or so, which is being set up for 2 MASSIVE paku!
    i will be using the exact same method on the new 10ft tank as i have every other tank in the last 5 years, with molasses.

    Are you going to add CO2?
    I was going to ask about the lighting on the sump, but you answered it.

      @Kaityscichlids  2 года назад +1

      No, only low tech for this setup. But it is cool to think how easy it would be to add CO2 into the sump

    Fluval fx6 or Sump? Sound and clear water is important for me. I afraid of Sump.

      The sump is great but if the tank didn't come plumbed with one I would always go for canister filters. Also, if you don't have anyone to show you how to set the sump up it is probably easier to go with the canister filters. If I had to do it on my own I would go with them

    Nice, I want it.
    I always put a LED Strip under the bottom of the cabinet to swith on and out.
    I always, but it is a lot of work, put silicon in the edges of the cabinet, so water make no frustration. And better to clean.
    If you switch on the light in your sump the whole day you will perhaps an armada of algae in your water. The polls flute in your big tank.
    Do you know something real? I hate algaes.

    please don't use those ridiculous filter socks, they clog up really fast. You have enough mechanical media in their as far as sponges go. Just keep topping up with more quality bio media. You may consider getting those marine pure bricks or small blocks in near the pump, which is in the lowest flow area of the sump. Later on you could add a reactor in there as we'll.

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  Год назад

      I'm going to give them a try and see what I think. What is a reactor for?

    Hey Katie, how’s it going? Your sump set up sounds great! As for your refusion, I think you should go on and set it up. Any plants that you buy and bring in will already be covered in beneficial bacteria. So that will help further the cycling of your tank that much more. And as for the type of plants to use, the sky is the limit as you know.🤘🏻🐠🦯
