Magnifique film que j'ai vu pour la première fois au cinéma alors que j'avais 10 ans en 1966.avec de merveilleux acteur tel que le grand Steve mac queen.candice bergen. Richard crenna. Richard attenborouthg.
This poignant, melodious, captivating song needs to be sung, not by a magnificent belter like the great Shirley Bassey, but by a tender-voiced and nuanced singer that can breathe love's quiet promise and eternal longing into Leslie's always incandescent lyrics (yes, that's the great Mr. Bricusse, one of those composers and lyricists who should be enthroned on the pantheon of great songwriters).
When I first saw this fantastic film it was on it's first release and it was unbelievable. I thought then as I do now that it should have been the best picture of the year and that Robert Wise deserved the Oscar for this picture that he won for "The Sound of Music" the year before and that that year's award should have gone to "Doctor Zhivago."
Jerry Goldsmith wrote the score with this movie. He says it was his first major break, and it came about by accident. He replaced Alex North as composer. Alex became ill, and Jerry replaced him. There were no vocals intended originally for this song ; the soundtrack contains no vocal renditions. Leslie Bricusse added lyrics afterwards and the song was quickly recorded by several artists.
Thank You for that very thorough history. Always appreciate knowledgeable people adding any information to specific videos. Have a feeling Shirley Bassey was misdirected as to the story & tone of what the song expressed in the film. She's wonderful & was capable of being delicate.
The history was correct. Read about the Chinese Civil War between Mao and the Nationalists where Westerners were caught up in it, including British and American military personnel.
Steve, One of my favorite actor. RIP my friend.
BEAUTIFUL MOVIE, BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY, FITTINGLY BEAUTIFUL SONG
This movie is a great masterpiece of cinema....Magnifecent Steve MC Queen, Candice Bergen, Richard Crenna, Richard Attenborough...
Magnificent film. Beautifully haunting melody.
McQueen's very best movie! My opinion only here.
Steve received his only Best Actor Oscar nomination with this performance.
I agree!
Very good in Papillon also.
Jack Jones sings this very well! This song reminds me of a woman I loved, cancer took her away.!
This was a great movie. In the tradition of Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, a turbulent decade but the movies were an escape to another world.

Richard Crenna était merveilleux dans ce film. Inoubliable.
Merveilleux film ! Je l'ai vu plusieurs fois !!!
Beautiful !!!

i agree
Agreed. Andy Williams did a great job singing this. Song brings me to tears every single time...
Andy Williams sang it beautifully, that smooth, velvet voice. Truly not a song for Bassey.
Interesting score for a war movie. Good song, good movie.
Toda una gran película en la extensión de la palabra.
Matt Munro did a great job on this song
Nice .

R.I.P. Steve.
Masterpiece!
Beautiful ❤
Goldsmith was probably very happy to take the place for North, whom he idolized. You can hear North's influence in Goldsmith's score for The Other.
Lindo filme . Linda musica
Not a song for Shirley Bassey.
Agreed, her voice is way too heavy for this beautiful song. Jack Jones has a nice version of this, so does Matt Monro.
Sounds OK to me. Romantic fantasy deserves all the BRASS it can take.

The people in this video use boats because they don't like car dealers.
Love Trini Lopez version
A melancholy echo from an unmatured love story concocted from a warped history.
actually, it's quite beautiful
@@mikeevans5810 in matters of romance fantasy is usually better than reality. Thumbs up.
Maybe but beautiful.
The history was correct. Read about the Chinese Civil War between Mao and the Nationalists where Westerners were caught up in it, including British and American military personnel.
What the hell happened?
Not a shirley bassey song. Not at all. Not even close.
Great voice but this isn't the song for it.
