This was the first King Diamond album I ever listened to. The year was 1988, I was 13 and attending middle school in a tiny especially religious one-horse town in the mountains of northeastern Alabama (there were 4 churches within spitting distance of my alma mater, no joke lol). I was newly initiated into the heavy metal lifestyle and had been eagerly devouring music like nobody's business. A buddy of mine was interested in a tape I had, and he offered up the album that would change my life in trade. I had never heard of the band before, but my curiosity was definitely piqued. The deal was made, and I spent the rest of the school day reading the lyrics to King & Company's 3rd release "Them". The story was one that a horror film aficionado such as myself could easily entertain; some people don't particularly enjoy the ideal of concept albums, but I absolutely love having each track further the progression towards a single crescendo. When I finally got home that afternoon, I immediately headed to my bedroom and got settled in for an audio adventure into the unknown...and I've never looked back. That was 33 years ago...I still love metal music, and I still adore the legend that is King Diamond. Keep rockin', brother, and stay heavy! Long live the King! By the way, "Them" has a permanent place of honor on any playlists I create...and I always listen to it in its' entirety 🤘
    Edit:
You absolutely must do a reaction for Conspiracy, which is the follow up album and finale to "Them". Released in 1989, it details the continuation to the story and picks up right where "Them" leaves us.

Yes on Conspiracy-even though The Eye is criminally underrated. A Visit from the Dead gives me goosebumps to this day.
Them tho- with Pete, Andy and Mikki is just magic.

You're absolutely right about Hollywood not having an original thought in their heads....and Mikey Dee has had one hell of a career, being the drummer for King Diamond, Motorhead, and now the Scorpions, that's a dream come true

At the risk of revealing spoilers...
In this story, King casts himself in the "protagonist" role, as a 9-yr-old boy (there's that "9" theme again) - also named King - living with his mother and younger sister Missy in their grandmother's old house known as "Amon".
Years earlier, the grandmother was institutionalized following the bizarre murder of her husband, whom she claimed and babbled incessantly as having been slain by "Them". When she is finally released from the asylum, she returns home to "Amon", where King, Missy, and Mother are waiting....
And this is where the album begins.
It is revealed that "They" do exist, and grandma has some kind of unnatural relationship with "Them", which includes a brew of bloody tea to invoke a euphoric state of mind. The "singing" by "Them" adds to this feeling.
King accidentally discovers this late one night, and Grandmother welcomes him into the secrets of "Amon", "Them", and the tea.
Mother eventually falls prey to these bizarre rituals and is slowly dying, but King, under the mind-altering influence of the tea and "Them" and Grandmother, is indifferent, but little Missy takes a stand by smashing the enchanted teapot (also called "Amon"?), greatly angering Grandmother and "Them". This proves fatal for little Missy.
It's not until King manages to get out of the house and escape the spell that he realizes, in part by the black smoke billowing form the chimney, what happened to Missy and the danger he and his mother are in. But he collects himself, and returns to the house with a plan to save his mother and get vengeance on Grandmother for what his did to his beloved sister.
    He is somewhat successful...
He returns to the house, and pretends to still be under the spell and nothing is amiss. Once Grandmother is convinced, King waits for the opportunity to make a move, which comes in the form of Grandmother's request to take a midnight stroll outside and bathe in the moonlight. Once outside, away from the power and protection of "Them", King is pushing the old woman in her wheelchair, and chooses his moment, by seizing Grandmother's cane and beating her to death with it. He then flees into the forest, his brain spinning from the voices of "Them". He passes out.
When he comes to the next morning, the house is surrounded by police as an ambulance takes his mother away to the hospital, and grandmother to the morgue. The events are investigated and King is interrogated by police... and Dr Landau...
Like his Grandmother before, King tries to explain what really happened, including the incredible parts about "Them" and the bloody brew. naturally, he is deemed by landau as having lost his mind, and of King goes to spend the next 9 years in the same asylum Grandmother did.
When he is finally released, he returns to the old house (prompted by the "Phone Call" from Grandmother, who tells him "plenty of people"- Grandpa, Missy, and Them - are all there, and would love to see him again)...
(Note : the Phone Call takes place at a time during the end of Twilight Symphony, after King gets released from the asylum, but before he returns to the house - I find it out of proper sequence to place it before or after Coming Home, so I use it as an album opener for the Conspiracy album, sort of a brief "recap" on how the previous album left off.)
That's the way I understood the tale... I may have some details wrong, but I find the lyrics rather unclear and cryptic in some places, and I may miss certain nuances or other subtle hints.
    But that's the gist.
    Until Conspiracy... ;-)

Love your channel! So as others have pointed out the album Conspiracy is the second part of this tale. And King Diamond does all the vocals. And he is the vocalist for Merciful Fate…. This was a concept album like Abigail…. But you have to check out Conspiracy to get to the end of this story. Again…. Truly enjoy your channel. Check out Conspiracy…. I am going to rewatch the Abigail review right now. Cheers brother!!!!

@@BigJsYTvideos Like the whole dilemma in Mother's getting Weaker. I always felt there was a palpable struggle in the King character as wanting to do the right thing but being pulled by his brainwashing and addiction to THEM.

    • @BigJsYTvideos
      @BigJsYTvideos 3 года назад +2

@@relativeparadox9567 Well, I went a bit further thinking that maybe "THEY" exist only in King's head and that he uses "THEM" as an excuse for his own actions. Like the knife and the axe just floating in the air, and King conviniantly unconcious as Missy meets her maker. So I thought it's all Kings insanity and going through Conspiracy it feels even more likely.
That doesn't completely pan out though if Grandma kept babbling about "THEM" in the asylum. Hmm..
Would be nice to know what happened before and how exactly did Grandpa lose his head..

Great reaction and commentary as usual! This album was my introduction to King Diamond in 1988. It scared the crap out of me, but the music was so intoxicating....so it always remained a guilty pleasure of mine as I grew older. King is one helluva story-teller and he plays all the characters with his singular voice (he sings all the character dialogue and narrates the story). I like to think of King Diamond as the "Steven King of metal" and have wondered why movies haven't been produced based on this music. I'm sure it's all about creative control....and King probably wouldn't have much of it if Hollywood is involved. 🤔 Will you do Conspiracy next? It's the second part of this story. Anyway, we'll done!👏

Andy's last name is LaRocque pronounced LaRock. I used say LaRocque too, for years, that is, until I caught an interview where the interviewer asked how to say his last name. He said, "it's La Rock". I'm going w/that 'cause I mean, the guy should know how to pronounce his own name, right?

The main reason no films or series have been created based on King's albums is cos King is wise enough to want to have complete creative control - you know if Hollywood got their hooks in it, they'd screw it all up to fit their own stupid "visions". Especially in this day and age with all the "woke" culture poisoning everything. Sadly, King was and still is too busy to devote the time and effort needed to flesh out a complete script or screenplay, much less have it materialize into an actual movie or extended video.
Though I did harbor some hope that he might have begun brainstorming a screenplay while he recovered from his heart surgery, since he might have finally had some down time to do so.
The most and best we can hope for and have right now is a graphic novel adaptation of his album Abigail... I hope it is followed up with Abigail II for a complete set. Then, if possible, Both Them and Conspiracy combined in its own graphic novel as well. In lieu of films, I'd happily accept graphic novels.

defaintly lol they will butcher such great concept albums that it will be a crime to even allow Hollywood near it without king full creative control
