Very good indeed, and very frank way of presenting especially with the earthworms. One thing that may need to be added to this presentation is what if things go wrong too much of waste, gets added to create anoxic conditions and anaerobic organisms kick start the break down process. Capacity planning should be part of this presentation else it may happen so that folks may think it is not easy as it sounds due to lack of technical knowledge. Motivation may get lost.
This is fantastic. I've had worm beds before to grow worms used for catching fish. I've since gotten into gardening and this just seems like a win win.
Absolutely. There is nothing like eating the food you grow and the taste is amazing ! There is nothing like organic food ! Organic keeps you healthy! I want to start a revolution in my village so I cant wait for my Red Wigglers to reproduce to 10000 so that I can make compost for others!
Lakshmi aunty Good day I was watching this video and then my neighbor came and we watched it together. He said this post really changed his life and it touched my heart. My village people are so grateful. Am proud to say cool post wow thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge 🥰 from the villagers of kikambu
I just enjoyed observing lakshmi ji's love for her "Babies"..... :-) ....she is very passionate about her WORMS and the vermi-compost......Undoubtedly an informative and interesting video......Thank you, both, Lakshmi Rebecca for bring it to us and Lakshmi ji for sharing with us this information
Thanks for you episode on vermi-compost in other parts of the world. I have worms in bins for my garden, but I have friends in apartments asking how they can compost or grow worms in their apartment and your show was very informative for what I can tell them, thanks, Kim
Very Informative. Thanks a ton. I would like to know how the compost is finally separated from the worms. When you put the compost into pots do some of the worms go in?
Thanks Vani Murthy Mam , Thanks Lakshmi Rebecca Mam , so nice information and thank you Vani Mam so much , it is so relaxing to watch that you are taking care of those little earth worms so nicely , I want to get rid of fears from worms , it is an inspirational video for me , I love nature and I want to overcome my fear of touching earthworms .
Thanks Debasish. I will search them at the local horti/Agri dept. Infact Govt agencies will take their own sweet time to reply back to inquiries, so better go directly at their office. Thanks again for your valuable info.
Wow superb informative video. The above mentioned number is wrong mam, can u pls correct the same. I need to buy a sintex vermi compost bin. Thanks in Advance.
It's really an interesting & useful program but I would like to know from what types of shop we would be able to get a composite bin. Can You help me as I love to do this for my kitchen garden as I purchase the vermi composite .
Wear some gloves Lakshmi Ji. Please don’t say it will give you immunity if you put bare hands in dirt/ earth. Most of us have unseen abrasions or scratches in the skin. The microorganisms can get into the body through these abrasions and cause serous infections. Diabetic patients please be extra careful. Respectfully Asha MD
@@lenac3587 you would be surprised to know how many people touch cow dung dialy in our country, they use it from manure to fuel for cooking. Daily morning farmers collect all the cow dung in containers and either make "cow dung cakes" (used as fuel for cooking) or dump it in a composting location to prepare organic manure. But i wont suggest to any westener do the same, because you might not have the antibodies to immune yourself from that, also the animals might be drugged for industrial reasons, remember these cows whose dung they touch are like their pets which they feed with fresh crops from their fields negating any harmful bacteria in their waste. Still, i myself don't touch cow dung as i am not used to it, but i just want to point out that its very normal here.
well explained about vermi compost, during the process will there be any smell or stink emerge? Is there any min/ max time frame for the process completion.
Thank you very much for this video. After watching this video and 'How to Compost in an Apartment' video, I adopted earthen pots to produce vermi compost, as I do not have this special vermi compost bin. I am able to produce vermi compost sustainably. I appreciate your [Vani and Laxmi] effort.
I really like this video. I was actually searching for a way to grow vegetables in my apartment. I was also wondering about making organic compost, but I don't think I would like dealing with worms...lol :-D
It's really an interesting & useful program but I would like to know from what types of shop we would be able to get a composite bin. Can You help me as I love to do this for my kitchen garden as I purchase the vermi composite . pls give me mumbai address
Best advice is, (which is included in this video) always bury all the food. Do not listen to other videos where they put food on the top of the soil, all this does is cause you to get flies/gnats. Don't worry that the food gets dirty when you bury it, they eat sand and dirt to help grind up their food.
Laxmi, can you tell me, the second part of "their apartment" - is this the part where we collect the compost from??? As far as I understood, in one part they feed and in another - compost is produced. Correct me if I am wrong please.
Is that a real background or a green-screen effect? If it is not a green-screen, then that Palm tree is incredibly large and I wonder if it is a coconut palm.
very informative and useful video. thanks for sharing. I have a question, I am based in Bangalore and wish to know, where I can get the worms from? how much is needed one tub of the size shown in the video? and cost of it?
Dear Vani Murthy, Thank you very much for your video. I have confusion about using tea powder and coffee powder while making in VARMI COMPOST. Please suggest me that can I mix the used tea or coffee powder which is utilized in home? because this powder is mixed with sugar. My mom and other friends told that sugar mixed powders are not suitable for plant and is there any other methods so I can use this sugar mixed tea or coffee powder for making VARMI COMPOST?
Yes, these are maggots and that is normal. I had to live with them too. But the smell can be avoided. Is the space airy enough? Is the garbage dry enough? Regards, Lakshmi
Lakshmi Rebecca Hi, I am in Chennai, Mogappair. Do you know any place nearby to get these worms. I just started with a small terra cota planting pot. I drilled many small holes. As it is little bit transparent, I am covering it with 2 other terra cota pot. I have taken few earth worms from my garden and I have kept it in them. I see they appear different from each other. So, I suspect atleast any one of them might be the compost worm. I have read many articles that few people in Mogappair is working on terrace garden and hope they should be using this method. Anyhow, I don't have their contact details or address. So, guide me if possible to get the compost worm.
+Thomas Puthupparampil They are called red wigglers and you can find them in cow and horse farms because they love manure, You can also look them up online, or go to your nearest bait shop! But they have to be RED WIGGLERS ! Nothing else will do the job!
I have a small doubt. You made the worm bed in one section of the bin. So do we drop our kitchen waste in the other section ? But you also were burying the kitchen waste in the worm bedding. Pl clarify. I am confused.
Since i'm a stranger to this process i have a couple of questions. If i'm understanding this right both the compartments in the green bin have ready to use matter. a)This matter is the soil for new plants, herbs etc to grow correct ?i.e i need not buy mud/soil but use this(matter) directly into a pot, put seeds and watch it grow correct? b) how many days does it take for a bin that size to give that much soil/matter ? c) how do you separate the worms(without harming them) from the new soil/matter to put back into the newly emptied out green bin ?
Hai. Since Clean India started by our PM Modiji, i also thought about it. After searching, i got Chai with Lakshmi. Thanks to Lakshmiji. I have started few days back, bot now it is filled up. I have one question? Can i put lemon weast to my bin or not? and what else i should do to develop it.
Lalit Kumar little quantity of lemon or orange peels is not going to hurt, but more of those make the worms go away from the peels and even out of the bin... also, no cooked food...no meat...egg shells can be crushed by hand or coarse ground in blender...any junk mail can be shredded and added for the carbon part...coffee/tea grounds can be added for nitrogen part...garlic, garlic skin, top and bottom part of all veggies, rotten fruit, dead flowers, dried grass, mint stems, spinach stems all can be added to the mixture...sprinkle water... keep it moist...use garden fork to toss it around once every few days....have fun composting!!!
Tks. But now I am facing insects problem. Its eating leaves. Have tomato plants, only tomatoes flowers I see but no tomato, because after flower it's getting dried. Kindly solve the problem.

I want to try this out for my kitchen garden in the apartment. Where can I get my first vermi compost starter kit in Delhi/NOIDA? I would need those first group of earthworms to start, right?
+Bipasha Jash You want specific compost worms for this job. They are often called manure worms, or red wriglers. These worms specialize in composting. Earthworms on the other hand, specialize in burrowing. Also great for your garden, but not for creating compost.
+TheBushdoctor68 Thanks for your reply. However, my question still remains! Where do I get my first vermi compost starter kit in Delhi/NOIDA? I would need those first group of earthworms/red wriglers to start with!!
Bipasha Jash I'm sorry, I don't have that information because I live in Europe. Building your own kit is quite easy and can be done quite cheap. There are some good instruction videos here on RUclips. As for your first batch of worms, I got mine from a local fishing bait shop. They sell all kinds of worms. Be sure that you are informed about the worms that you need, because the guy at the bait shop probably can not give you advice on that. After you have seen a few videos, it's easy to recognize those red crawlers.
+TheBushdoctor68 But fishing bait store will provide any worm may be composting or burrowing so problem still remains if someone need red wriglers specifically and how good they are in reproduction
Zeshan Rasheed That's not exactly correct. Apparently different fish like different bait, so bait stores usually have several types of worms and other bait. They make clear distinctions between these types, just not for the purpose that we use them for. This is where it helps to know what you're looking for. The worm that we need, Eisenia Fetida, comes in many names, but isn't hard to recognize. Just look up a few photo's and you will be able to tell the bait guy which ones you want to take home. The store that I went to sold them as 'red manure worms', and I recognized them as the ones that I needed. It helps if you know your stuff, which isn't that hard with all the internet help nowadays. Here's another suggestion: Find someone with horses, scoop a bucket full of old manure, which will *definitely* have the right worms and you're good to go. :)
