Thank you for sharing this type of information with the world! I wish this type of discussion wasn't seen as so taboo... everyone uses the bathroom, and I imagine you need to learn an entire new set of bathroom skills after a spinal cord injury. The world would be better if more people shared the information they have for making life easier and more enjoyable. You're a strong, awesome person!

Something I have found useful is that platinum cured food grade silicone tubing doesn't stink or turn yellow if you rinse it afterwards. I have some from my lab, (can't remember the O.D. right now, I'll post it and the supplier tomorrow) that is just the right size to stick into the catheter and seal. I've been using the same one for years with no funky stink, just rinse with water most times, and bleach it a few times a month. The silicone is also much more flexible and easier to work with than the stiffer vinyl or EPDM.

I have a little girl whose 5 and she is a manual wheelchair user. I have wondered how the heck she was going to do this someday by herself if we choose not to go a surgical route to make it easier. So thanks for giving me some really awesome ideas of what are options for her as we learn how to cath this year and she works towards more independence.
    Shout out from Vancouver BC!
Thank you so much for sharing and be so open and honest.
And don’t worry about the plastic, this is a perfectly valid reason to use a one use plastic. Unlike most plastics in the world used in daily life. This is so different. But biodegradable would be pretty cool.

Greetings, I am a L-4, incomplete para and use a French-14. What I figured out was to use betadine solution ,basically iodine to wipe down the cath before use and you can re-use it later if need be ($$$).Also, it will cut back on UTI's. I grab a orange urine sample bottle for some gauze and solution inside, very portable. One last thing, when dealing with the toilet, I pull my wheelchair directly in front, then I place my feet with my hands to the side of the bowl, and move forward. Some chairs legs swing out, mine do not. (fixed). But it works without making a mess or touching anything, good luck..thomas.

I can relate to these tips. In 2017 I had Kidney cancer (left one) and then prostate issues addressed after that. I had to learn to use catheters myself. Fortunitly for me I only had to cath for about a year and a half. One trick on the road was I popped one of the drain holes in my floorboard, under the edge of my seat on the floor, of my pickup and made an easy removable plug for it. It gave me the ability to pull over to the side of the road in the grass or gravel shoulders and could empty my bladder without even opening my door. And it was less embarrasing because it just looked like my air conditioner condensation was heavy. I don't reccomend doing this while moving because it will get all over the underside of your vehicle, and that's going to make it smell after a while. Now here it is 2020 and I'm confined to a wheelchair temporarily due to 2 broken legs. So I'm getting to learn how poorly building archetects have addressed wheelchair accessibility. 6 more weeks then I get to teach my legs how to walk again. Sounds easy, but being 68 years old, it's going to have it's challenges. (But not my first Rodeo)
People cannot appreciate what you're going through unitil they roll a mile in a wheelchair. God Bless!

A Marine I know has incontinence issues as well from a lower back (lumbar?) injury. He uses a long rubber tube in place of the catheter tube reaching to his boot tops (he also still needs to use boots for to hold his feet straight).
He folds the tube 6-10" up & when needed unfolds it & goes.
    Noone knows it's there.

This is so great. I have MS and can still transfer to the toilet to cath, but it's a struggle. Now I know how to do it when my legs fail me entirely. That's a big relief! Thank you!
FYI, after I use a cath, I rinse it in water, dip in 90% alcohol, and put back in its little bag ready for its next use. I know male catheters can be cleaned with the alcohol technique too since it was a male user who is a retired nurse who told me about it. I used to just throw all my caths away after one use, but now they last a week!

Re-use tip: Biol & dry. I've done this for thirty years.
Keep a stainless steel pan to put your used caths in. Out in the field I put used caths into a big ziploc bag wich I then put onto another ziploc bag to protect the first from tearing, thus contaminating everything in my back bag on my chair.
After about 15 or so caths accumulate in the bag I put them in the pan with a DROP of Ivory dish soap. I fill it to about an inch from the top with distilled water and stove it on high until ot boils. Be careful not to let it boil over! I take the pan, on a lap "desk", very carefully to the sink & dump it, using tongs to manage to not dump the caths with the steaming hot, dirty water. I then boil them a second time without soap.
I dump off then put caths in a hand towel & roll them up. I then take them to my bathroom and with all of them in my grasp I "beat" the small ends on the towel to assist on getting the most part of the water out. Then I wrap the towel around the drain ends and hold it loosely enoigh so air can move through all of them and then use my blow dryer to blow hot (using the cool button as well as to not overheat the caths) & cool air through the caths. I hit both ends about three times with the dryer at about 20 to 30 seconds then leave them in a open container.
I was taught this in rehab 31 years ago and I swear by it. Then I put my cleans in another ziploc. I always carry two Vitamin Water 591ml bottles with me and a few 500ml water bottles as well. I rinse with hot water & lysol for the Vitamin Water bottles & re-use them until they get aroma then toss them. The other bottles I toss right after use.
This is the only social media I use so here is my number if you have any specific questions. 937.597.8252.

Just empty the bag and rinse it out afterwards and they can last quite some time before they start smelling bad. I also keep disinfecting alcohol with me that I rinse the bag with when I don't have a restroom accessible, so on the road I'll cath in to the bag, pour the bag out and rinse it with alcohol.

Have you ever had a set of hand controls installed in a car vs the portable set?? They are SO so much nicer for most any and all concerns. I have a portable set for the downside of it and have rarely rarely used them. There’s very little modification to the car and they can be snatched out and reinstalled in a few short hrs. The downside is the initial cost of acquiring the controls and then the few bucks to have them installed in a new vehicle. Also, most car makes will reimburse you for some of the cost if you buy new. Toyota for example covers up to $1000 which made my hand controls about $300 out of pocket.

I have the full set of regular, installed hand controls that I took out of the suv. They cost me almost $500 to have installed in any vehicle. I drove two different used cars before this new one. The person who installed them in the new suv moved the steering column and installed them for his height (he was 5'3, I'm 5'8 and all legs), which meant that I had more than one bloody knee before I wrapped the ball joints in hockey tape. That, and anyone who wished to drive the vehicle who was over my size really couldn't.
I love my portable ones 1000 times more than any installed version of hand controls. I have yet to drive one of Rob Parsons race cars, electronic shifter, manual, hand controls. But for now, I'm good with the 'C-class' controls :)

Pro Tips For Paras I suppose it goes to show how wide the range of living life is for people in chairs! I don’t really dislike my portable set per say, I’m just familiar with the installed set. That install story is pretty crazy! My install company had me get i the car and set everything exactly how I wanted it which obviously alleviated fitment issues. Also, somewhere inside you, it had to feel good flexing in your comment. “Dude was 5’3” and I, well I am a 5’8” goddess of legs” haha (I’m just kidding with you)

I was just in the hospital and I have mobility issues.....getting to the commode quickly is near impossible for me. The nurse noticed that I was not drinking enough nor sleeping well and asked me why.......I was afraid of having accidents and requiring someone to clean me up.....So she said I have a solution.....it was a female vacuum that gently sucks away all moisture every time......SO INCREDIBLY AWESOME BUT WEIRD!!! I had to make myself accept that it was ok.....as soon as that happened I could sleep ALL NIGHT not just an hour here and there. I've said all of this to say.... perhaps (at least for home) it's a more comfortable option to catheters with less risk of causing damage or infections. Food for thought :-)

My sleep isn't interrupted often by the worry or need to pee. I live my days and nights in briefs so I'm not as concerned about incontinence. And most of my bladder accidents happen during the day. I get up to pee usually once at night, which doesn't bother me as I'm up switching positions at least a dozen times anyways

Hello, I’m Kevin, and I’m an amputee. Something that I have, to use the facilities, I got from Sporty’s Pilot Shop. It is called a Little John Urinal, and there is a female adaptor for it, called the Lady Jane Adaptor for the Little John Pilot Urinal. Sporty’s Pilot Shop is an online shop. I don’t know if it would work better than your catheter system, but I thought it might.

Hey great video. I use the speedicath from coloplast, they come with a bag that fills with urine, then you can dispose of it when it's convenient. Maybe google it, they're far superior and much smaller to carry around.

If using plastic is an issue, May i suggest using Female cath with a extension, The extension could be reused and kept capped when not in use plus easily cleaned with simple detergents, The reason i suggest this is to avoid using larger stiffer male caths. And possible hurting yourself.
I enjoy your vids, I date a lovely woman with wheels and you give me insights.

I use the “Flip-Flo” leg bags to collect the urine and then I can dump it when available. I use the catheter 3 to 5 times a day and I clean the catheter and leg bags with vinegar and rinse under running hot water at night. A catheter will last 4 to 7 days. I’ve been doing this for 33 years now, and I’ve maybe had 5 UTIs in those years. Stay safe and stay ready! 😉🖖🏼🛸
