PRS "tap" the coils by using a standard split wiring, but they put a resistor between the bonded wire goes between the coils and the ground so you get a bit off the off coil when "tapping" it.
Similar to how coil splitting essentially halves a humbucker, coil tapping cancels out the full length of the pickup magnet by taking the signal from a shorter point in the wire (usually around the midpoint). It can be utilised in both humbucker and single coil pickups. This reduced output affects tone slightly differently to splitting. In theory your guitar is more versatile.
@@ChrisShortyAllen the way prs does it they essentially have a fixed volume on one coil. That isn't really a tap. It makes what is a tap vs a split even more confusing

14:50, Technically, that is a Resistor. The Resistor's colored bands denote it's Ohm value. The Capacitors (yellow) are flush against the bottom of the control cavity and typically are wired between the Volume and Tone Potentiometers. The purpose of the Resistors in this PRS Control Circuit are to reduce the Tone Potentiometer's overall value by being wired in parallel. What this does is allow the Humbucker pickups to see a 500K Ohm Tone Pot Load (as is normal for a Humbucking Pickup). When the Push-Pull Tone Pot is activated the Pickup's output is reduced (either Tapped Coil or Single Coil), the single coil signal now passes through the extra Resistor's parallel circuit and reduces the Tone Pot's value to better match the single coil output (as Single Coil Pickups typically require a 250K - 300K Ohm Tone Pot load). All of this extra circuitry keeps the single coil and humbucker modes from sounding too bright or too dark giving them a balanced tonal output.

Definitely not for that, although you could add that to the circuit if needed. That'd also give you a voltage division in the range needed, and PRS is known for using partial coil splits. And ~9k would give close to the 5 and a bit k out when tapped. A bit much for my ears, I think you get more single coil sparkle with something closer to a 1.2k with that circuit, but regardless better than a pure coil split as it adds beef to an otherwise anemic sound.

A coil tap & coil split are different things. A split is what the name implies: shunting one coil of the humbucker to ground (in this case, PRS uses resistors in-line to make it a partial split. A coil tap uses multiple hot wires that can vary the output (after so many windings, they "tap" off that output, and then continue winding the pickup).
Love your show Trogly. And I love PRS guitars. But that is not a black gold "wrap "- wrap means that the natural binding is covered up by the paint. So that's just black gold. And as a wood library owner, I believe that all of the wood libraries are indeed 10 tops. That's kind of the point, the dealer is choosing a sick crazy flame or quilt top to be part of the run. 👍🏻
There are also artist-grade tops for WL too. They aren't specially marked, which is a bit confusing. I had a WL Cu24 a few years ago, and when I contacted PRS with the serial number, they gave me all the specs, including that it was an artist-grade top.
Absolutely beautiful. I have an SE, that i love but next to my good friend's early 90s core its clear how different they are. Next to this one? Forget about it! A private stock made to my spec would be my holy grail guitar!
I'm a lucky owner of a private stock, and though it wasn't made to my spec, there is something about it. Undeniably best guitar I have played (Although I'm yet to touch the crimson division). Keep up the dream and it will be yours someeday!!
I have the S2 (USA made, below core) 10th Anniversary 594, which has the same pickups and neck carve, and it's just magic. Pure rock 'n roll. So I'm not surprised you like this one. Reminds me of a Les Paul despite the double cutaway shape.
Owned a PRS many years ago but just couldn't bond with it. I think it was because it was too beautiful and I was overly concerned with damaging it or having it stolen. However looking at them, they are really a work of art. All the best David, thanks for sharing and your service. Stay safe and safe home.
That 594 Hollowbody II isn't semi-hollow actually - its fully hollow! The only piece connecting the top and back are for the bridge to remain stable. They actually do make a Semi-Hollow 594 in singlecut and doublecut, where they have 1 f-hole and have the center-block ES-type construction! :)
I mean, it's still not fully hollow, it's just nearly fully hollow :P A big part of actual hollow bodies is the top being able to vibrate up and down, which the HB2 just doesn't do. It's extremely resonant of course, but it's quite different from a fully hollow body.
@@mikeomatic9905 Interesting, I was under the impression that all hollowbody guitars had that support chunk under the bridge. They're clearly not my area of expertise I suppose lol. I guess this adds some kind of redundancy with the semi-hollow 594? I wouldn't put it past PRS since they use the same body shape for nearly every model haha
@@NewPraetorianBlues so the semi hollows (594, CE24, Special, etc) all are chambered out a lot around the sides, but are more solid than the HB2. Something like an ES335 is actually a little more hollowed out than a semi-hollow PRS, as it only has the center block. If you look at, say, a true hollow body Gretsch, (like the Chet Atkins, IIRC), you'll see the entire top is floating. That's often why they have a trapeze tailpiece -- the top is too thin to anchor the bridge to. One issue these can have is that the tops will vibrate in certain conditions, causing some feedback. The PRS HB2 solves that by having that one block under the bridge that connects top to bottom, and keeps the top from vibrating.

@@NewPraetorianBlues To be honest, I don't have any experience whatsoever with Languedoc guitars. The trapeze tailpiece looks pretty cool (IMO) so it wouldn't surprise me if some guitar makers just opt to have one if it's not strictly necessary. If it's a fairly quiet stage (no big amps, drums further away or isolated) then having a fully hollow body should probably be fine. It's only when things get pretty loud that feedback starts being an issue.
Thanks for sharing, however there are more than two upgraded specs on that guitar. A wrapped burst would cover the Maple edge, so this is a black gold burst. And yes, it is a Brazilian Rosewood headstock veneer. Paul design is actually a Gibson and fender morphed together.
As an Epi/Giby guy myself, when I decided I wanted to try a PRS, I picked up the SE version of the McCarty. Not as fancy as this, but I love it. It’s familiar enough with the scale length and the control layout so similar to a Les Paul. But still very much a PRS.
The only thing about this model from PRS that bothers me is the toggle being on the top horn. I understand why they did it though. I’ve quickly become a PRS only kind of guy lol
Great review as always. I have a Santana Artist Package. An "Artist Grade" is the next step up from a "10 Top" and does not have a 10 stamp like a Wood Library. "Artist Grade" maple tops feature a greater depth of curl and/or more amount of curl while not quite being a Private Stock grade top.
Trogly, the best strap to have for a 'heavier" guitar is the widest one you can find, and wear it out towards the end of your shoulder, so the weight is resting on bone, and not on the muscles and nerves closer to your neck. I play some heavy basses....a Ric, and a Univox Lucite "Lucy" bass, among others, and I've never had back or neck problems.

I preferred the old CE carve top (like Core models) versus the newer flatter top (more like S2) personally, but still great guitars overall.
True, I was forgetting that they now present Bolt-On as a separate range - with the CE, Silver Sky, Fiore and the new Tele-alikes. And the CE has S2/SE hardware but USA pickups... it's not confusing at all...
A Wood Library PRS ($4k-$6k) is just a more affordable Private Stock ($12k+) Guitar. Wood Library and Private Stock are PRS' version of Custom Shop Guitars. A beautiful PRS doesn't meed to be a Wood Library. If you will be getting a high end PRS, always look for a Quilted Maple Top. Most PRS' come with nice flamed maple tops. A TEN Top is better book matched. A nice new feature to look for is a satin or color-matched (with the top) flamed maple neck. You can also get a satin rosewood neck.
I've seen dozens if not hundreds of "10-tops" from prs and in my opinion it means absolutely nothing when coming from them. I've seen so many non 10 tops that line up and have better figuring so it makes no sense how they choose.
PRS tiers are a bit weird. I had a wood library artist package a few years ago. The wood library part meant that mine had a maple neck/fretboard and different pickups than stock. The artist package meant that it was a finish that was not normally available, it had hybrid nickel/gold hardware, and it had a special artist-grade top that is supposedly higher than 10-top. (But below Private Stock.)
Some of these trim finishes have been discontinued, like the artist package was only done for a few years and then I think they stopped doing that one and started the wood library package. The artists were nice. But I think the last year they made them was 2018? I have a 2021 wood library with a one piece quilt top that is insane.
@@robertkalmey5270ah yeah, I checked get email I got from PRS with the specs, and it's an artist-grade top. So still between Private Stock and 10-Top. That being said, it was a 2017 Cu24 IIRC.

Just wanted to tell ya to keep uo the good work I love how sometimes broaden your horizons and do some other brands, youre amazing at documenting all of these lived this PRS!
About the Brazilian rosewood; PRS do sometimes make them for sale overseas. For example the recent Joe Walsh signature model was available in Europe with the Brazilian board. I assume PRS felt it worthwhile going to the trouble of the certification for that model. And the rosewood headstock veneer is a standard thing. I’m assuming though that it would also be Brazilian to match the fingerboard on this guitar; the standard would be Indian rosewood.
I own a core PRS, Les Paul Supreme, SG Deluxe, Fender Ultra Strat, American made Telecaster and more guitars. My most frequently played guitar is my PRS. I Love all of my guitars though!
Beautiful guitar and congrats to the buyer! Hopefully someone has you review a private stock soon. When I bought my lp custom last year from sweetwater, the sales rep recommended I consider a private stock for a next purchase.
Oh momma thats a sweet guitar , I love the body carve , those pickups sound so good , great range of tones !...Ive been wanting a PRS Custom- 24 soooooome daaaaaay ! Its amazing how PRS became so successful , its called QUALITY !..Thanks Trogly !
One thing interesting about the bridge is that the "giant" saddles/blocks were changed to be smaller (more similar to Gibson) at some point after 2019. I'm not sure why, and I kind of prefer the bigger ones, personally.
NGL, not really the biggest fan of PRS guitars but that sounded pretty damn good to my old ears, especially that bridge pup (& I hardly ever use the bridge pup on any of my guitars. I'm a total neck guy).
I think it means it is only for sale in the USA. Could it be because of the woods when that was a big issue? I read somewhere Gibson was actually 24 & 9/16 or something like that at some early point.
You are missing the S2 and the CE lines that are between the SE and Core models. Both great lines but offer different specs to the big boy guitars and the student guitars.
They did that to mimic the Les Paul. This is basically the most Les Paul type guitar of all the PRS guitars. The single cut shows that better but I like double cut PRS.

True, I was forgetting that they now present Bolt-On as a separate range - with the CE, Silver Sky, Fiore and the new Tele-alikes. And the CE has S2/SE hardware but USA pickups... it's not confusing at all...
The Brazilian Rosewood models typically have it on both the fretboard and headstock veneer.
Moo
I kinda wish they had separate bridge pickup covers with the lettering turned around
for as much as they cost, they should have!
Finally PRS! Cool
I just got a PRS in the same case today... Private Stock with a one piece solid Ebony front, and a whole lot more going on!
FYI, I believe the PRS "Artist" package is between the "Wood Library" and "Private Stock". But I could be mistaken.
Trogly!! Ive been watching your show on and off for years and just recently subscribed because I always thought I was already subbed. Just wanted to tell ya to keep uo the good work I love how sometimes broaden your horizons and do some other brands, youre amazing at documenting all of these lived this PRS!
I've got a wood library 594, best guitar I've ever owned or played, different level quality.
You were on it in the playing demo today. I think you're starting to like these PRS's.
Thanks for sharing David enjoy when you get home 🤘
About the Brazilian rosewood; PRS do sometimes make them for sale overseas. For example the recent Joe Walsh signature model was available in Europe with the Brazilian board. I assume PRS felt it worthwhile going to the trouble of the certification for that model.
And the rosewood headstock veneer is a standard thing. I’m assuming though that it would also be Brazilian to match the fingerboard on this guitar; the standard would be Indian rosewood.
You forgot the CE and S2 ranges of prs, which are between the se and core models.
Awesome Tones and Clarity. Definitely a Keeper. Wise Choice David.
Trogs, you didn’t mention those PRS locking tuners! Kinda cool about them.
Great review, beautiful top!👍👍
4:35 - CITES is commonly pronounced with 2 syllables, as in "sigh-tease". I work for USDA and have seen a few of these permitted shipments.
I would say this is Paul Reed Smiths best guitar made. I’m not a huge PRS fan, but they are extremely nice. I still love my fenders and Gibson’s.
I agree and feel the same about the Fender’s and Gibson’s.
I own a core PRS, Les Paul Supreme, SG Deluxe, Fender Ultra Strat, American made Telecaster and more guitars. My most frequently played guitar is my PRS. I Love all of my guitars though!
Cool story and love that your service can open up solutions for situations like this. Good stuff!!!
Beautiful guitar and congrats to the buyer! Hopefully someone has you review a private stock soon. When I bought my lp custom last year from sweetwater, the sales rep recommended I consider a private stock for a next purchase.
That case! The guitar is nice too🙂
That's the best sounding guitar you had on your show since the Johnny Winter Firebird and I'm not a PRS fanboy
11:47 Best advice. ;-)
I've been a fan of the tones on the McCarty Models. The earliest version did not have the best coil split, but the newer ones are fantastic.
I love the service from Wildwood Guitars. They will set up, even used, guitars how you want them before shipping them to you.
PRSs are waaay superior than Gibsons. Better design, better QC, better pricing... this video just confirms that!
Yes, thank you David.
I have a PRS 408 wood library edition.. its pretty damn nice. The built for USA only is because of the rules with the Brazilian Rosewood laws.
That PRS its in better condition than most of new Gibson LP 😂😂😂
I guess I'm a sucker for a quilt top.
The artistic/quality side of this guitar is well thought out.....not to mention the case.
Thanks, David!
Congratulations David.
Beautiful guitar.
Some great design improvements compared to a Les Paul.
That’s a really beautiful guitar!!!
David going ham.
Thank you David.
It's beautiful and sounds great. It's not a Gibson but it's very nice.
You are missing the S2 and the CE lines that are between the SE and Core models. Both great lines but offer different specs to the big boy guitars and the student guitars.
Such a great guitar, unfortunately with a deal breaker pick up switch location on a double cut.
They did that to mimic the Les Paul. This is basically the most Les Paul type guitar of all the PRS guitars. The single cut shows that better but I like double cut PRS.
I personally find the funny story really heart warming god bless you Trogly also your videos are a great To watch
thank you for your service David. thats a gorgeou prs you got
Nice clean sounds all around
you skipped right over the PRS "S2" line, which lives between the SE and Core models when you were giving the hierarchy of the PRS lines
You forgot about the S2 and CE lines, in between SE and Core.
THAT is a BEAUTIFUL guitar.
I remember Carlos Santana said he couldn't take his PRS on tour in England because of his fretboard.
too strange to not be true.
Trogly...where did you find a tape measure that does scale length ? i searched the internet for one , but cannot find one
A viewer sent it to me a few years ago. I believe "centerpoint" is the search term you're looking for to find one
@@Trog thank you !!!

WARNING: Be careful with PRS USA-made vs PRS Import guitar models in terms of interchangeable parts (English vs Metric).
English versus metric? I think you mean imperial, or maybe freedom units? 😂
PRS Core guitars now come with plastic tuner keys instead of the metal keys. The change is something to do with improving weight and total quality.... Don't think so Tim.
That's gorgeous 🥰
Cream of the crop from PRS 👌
What a beauty
beautiful guitar i hope he enjoys it!! truely i do
