- Meet Alex English: The NBA’s Leading Scorer in the 1980’s -- talking about Denver Nuggets forward Alex English. He was the all time leading NBA scorer in the 1980's - more points than Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Dominique Wilkins and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Alex English might be one of the most underrated / underappreciated NBA basketball players of all time.

I always consider him one of the most underrated players of all time
Along with Adrian Dantley
And Dominique Wilkins
And George Gervin
Same nobody gives him enough credit very surprised he did not win a championship
@@andyparent3133 BERNARD KING!! the real KING!!!
He used to avg like 28 ppg every year. He used to battle Adrian Dantley every year for the scoring title
Alex English should get more respect as one of the greatest players of the 1980s
How is he not on the 75 year anniversary list. Mind boggling.
yet dame makes it
@@nbaswin2925 because Dame would dominate the 80s by himself. Wtf are you fuckin smoking?
It's not mind boggling because there are at least 100 players better than Alex English and he could never do shit in this Era.
@@REBEL1-16 with that logic then Jordan, Kareem, bird, magic, Thomas, and more wouldn’t do anything in this era. Alex English was up there, man averaged more than 25 every season in the 80s. Even averaged almost 40 one season.
@@REBEL1-16 it’s hard to say what dame would do in the 80s it’s a 40 year difference. The game has changed drastically
That op shot tho, my boy stretches his whole body and shoot with his fingers.
ikr lmao
Loved this guy! Soooo under-rated!!!! Imagine a player WANTING to play for a team his whole career and WANTING to not join a super team, but just WANTING to bring a championship to that city....respect Mr. English...respect!
Wow totally agree Ert Nitram
Kevin Green copy all Kevin! English was a lone gunslinger knowing he was outgunned by the Lakers and other power houses back in the 80s...but stayed in Denver and made the Nuggs respectable!!!
@@skiprenegade111 Alex was great. The Nuggs lost to the LAKERS in 1985 for the west conf. championship. The west was LOADED!: UTAH, Dallas, Phoenix, Seattle, Portland, Houston, Nuggets. The Lakers of course with Kareem & Magic were on uh bigger stratosphere. The NBA west conf. even now is still competitive. Do this: From 1980 to 2019, the NBA west conf. hav the most chips. Laker hav 11. Spurs hav 5. Warriors have 3. Rockets hav2. Dallas hav 1. East conf. hav the Bulls with 6. Celtics hav 4. Heat hav 3. Pistons 3. Cavaliers 1. Raptors 1. 22 for the west & 18 for the east. That said, the deck was like the COLORAD ROCKY MOUNTAINS for Alex to win a chip for Denver back then. Great player. HOFers.
No need to imagine. It wasn't really possible back then. Free agency was very restricted back then
Favorite player of all time, finally someone does a video on him
alex is my cousin
@@eydondozier864 he’s my grandpas cousin
@@eydondozier864 Alex is uh righteous 🐈 cat man. Incredible player. HOFers. Smoooooth!
Definitely one of my favorites as well. I prefer the underrated players best that you don't hear about as much.
He was awesome. Look at his shot. From way up there next to impossible to defend. Oh yeah and he was in the movie "amazing grace and chuck." RLTW 3/75
I always liked watching the Nuggets play back then. Those 80’s teams were fun to watch with English and the rest of the team, they way they played with that high octane offense. English was great, should be in the top 75.
Alex English and Sidney moncrief, and Rolando Blackman my favorite players growing up
Some great players. I loved Blackman, too especially
A very underrated player, mostly because he didn't have a flashy game and didn't play for a contender. But he was a monster for much of the '80s.
Finally someone talks about him
I found English to be a similar player to Jamaal Wilkes, lanky 6'7" forwards. The 1980s was a golden era for the small forward, Bird. Erving, Worthy, Wilkins, Dantley, English
And Bernard King, Mark Aguirre, Marques Johnson, Kiki Vendeweghe, Purvis Short, Kelly Tripucka, Mike Mitchell, all were prolific scorers. In 1983-84, 8 of the top 10 scorers were SF; In 84-85 it was 7/10.
I’ve gone to his basketball camp a few times at South Carolina, his work ethic to improve was amazing when he made his shot better for the higher levels. Such a great player and a great person giving so much back to the community
Alex English was a silent killer who was on one of the most prolific offenses ever. Still didn't average more on a per-game basis than MJ tho. But make no mistake, the man was instant offense.
Jordan was greater scorer than English...but this is proven through their amount of TOTAL points they dropped during their prime years and not PPG...PPG is very inaccurate in terms of depicting who are the greatest scorers
He definitely was underrated he should have been on the NBA Top 50 in 97 he flourished in Doug Moe system which benefited his style of play
It's sad how few people remember/know who he is
He ruled the 80's.. He used to battle Adrain Dantley for the scoring title
And all you hear is how overlooked Dominique is. Alex is right there, too. Easily so.
i know him personally he is my cousin
@@eydondozier864 South Carolinas' BEST!
The best
nugget off all time an humble Man as kid it was blessing to watch him play never talk trash his game spoke for him , im from Denver so i got a brids eye view. Nuggets Fan for life an also English fan for life. that run an gun Nuggets team of the 80s was fun to watch and with the Doug Moe i sure do miss them Days.
I knew a little about English but I'm glad you made this video.
I like the historical vids, man. Keep them up.
They need to Honor him with this years championship!
Kiki Vandeweghe averaged 28 ppg in 1984, he's underrated af too
Tupac's Ghostwriter the whole Nuggets team from the mid 70’s to mid 80’s with Kiki, Skywalker, that white boy Issel & my son bobby Jones is underrated
He was good af
@@comicthecon No u didn't just call Dan, 'the HORSE' that. Man. U left out T. R. DUNN & my buddy Ron Valentine.
Great vid.
great video, keep it up
Great video man! Thanks, I got to show my daughter who the guy on my jersey is. :)
Wow... Denver really did him dirty. I'm glad they made up but it's still fucked up.
ONE OF THE BEST SCORERS THIS LEAGUE HAS SEEN!!!
Awesome player!!!
I just got his jersey. Easily a top 3 purchase of my life
my fav underappreciated player - him and TOM CHAMBERS
Definitely top 5 most underrated nba player ever
My first throwback jersey was Alex English 😂 I never heard of him until somebody gave me his jersey
scoring machine fantastic shooter
damn. nothing has changed with Nuggets defense I see
1980s probably had the overall highest density of great SF Larry bird Dominic Wilkins Alex English Adrian Dantley bernard king James worthy just to name a few
Mark Aguirre also
total beast
He was very good. The narrator sums up his career.
I can`t lie: Before this, I didn't know who he was. I might have heard the name but I wouldn't have been able to place it. Well, I learn something every day.
Adrian Dantley and Darrell Griffith were also putting up big numbers, but they played for Utah. Small market teams always see players forgotten.
The most underrated player of all time. If he were more flashy or outspoken, or played for a big market team he would be co soldered a legend. As far as I’m concerned, he is
Very underrated
Dudes shot was so clean
That high release point is unstoppable in any era of basketball...u don't have to have a deep bag if u shot is water and can't nobody block it. Get to yo spot and light they ass up every trip
alex english was a superstar and in the 80's the best individual statistic was the scoring from the legendary kareem abdul-jabbar
I’m so thankful you made this vid. NBA 2k 18 shows him no love on the All Time nuggets team. He has zero HOF badges. With not much capabilities to score with all the animation issues the game has. It all but credits the All Time Lakers, Warriors & Rockets. Big west teams.
It’d be nice if you make a edit for Kiki Vandeweghe & Dan Issel
Noti gang
Alex English is so damn underrated it’s criminal
That shaun Livingston jumper
love ur vids bro
appreciate it man
The best . Alex
Overlooked from the NBA 75th anniversary team.
Terrible. Has more accolades than some of the new editions. The small Denver market, and success of Boston, LA really hurts him til this day.Personally he should've been in instead of Leonard
0:55 Is that Mike Dunleavy Sr? I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-Amerecium too. I remember Alex English, Kiki Vandeweghe and Dan Issel as that high scoring trio!
Alex English was the best scorer of the 80s so smooth
In all my NBA fan years he personifies underrated
Damn Alex English smooth scorer
Wayyyy underated. Because Denver nuggets
The most underrated scorer of all time is David thompson. He scored 25+ his rookie year and so on and if he wouldn't have gotten in to drugs he would have been one of the greatest scorers of all time
Kristoffer Twerberg my fav player all time besides Gervin
Letting David Thompson go because of the drugs was a benefit to Alex.
@@davanmani556 David (before drugs) was great. But gotta say you're right. And Alex was sooooo dependable.
English VS Gervin seems like a great matchup
My man threw his shoulder blade going for that block 2:09
His game was simple but effective.
you should do a video on Adrian Dantley next, hes another one of the most underrated players of all time, the dude was averaging Kobe numbers allot of years while shooting like 55% from the field
also averaged over 30ppg 4 times over 26 8 times and over 20 10 times, also averaged like 6.5 rebounds and 4 assists through most of his prime
@@liamseekamp9627 A. D. was great. Pistons did him wrong tho. AD did play in the 1988 finals with the Pistons.
He was flashy just not in the way you're thinking... like driving to the basket aka Jordan. He was a midrange master and the way he'd get open enough for those shots were silky smooth.
Alex English had an offensive play style that would be so out of date nowadays. He lived on the mid range shot and did not get to the line often. Yet he was a pretty accurate shooter. He also was a decent passer and he tried on defense.
Agreed. Without a 3 point shot either.
It may be out of vogue now but there is DeMar DeRozan.
South Carolina Breed 💪🏾
My favorite Nugget of all-time is a man by the name of David "Skywalker" Thompson. I think Alex is the second best player in franchise history. Dikembe being #3. If David hadn't screwed up his career with drugs, I think he would've been the franchise's all-time leading scorer. Just my opinion...Have a blessed day ✌️
This man lives 15 mins away from me and I saw him at my gym kinda crazy lol
He was one of those great scorers who didn't have a lot around him but I definitely remember him growing up in the 80s.
No he did have Kiki and issel but if they had a good PG or SG and decided to play defense in the playoffs they would win, they would’ve won.at least 1 or 2
Adrian Dantley was an underrated scorer too
Doug Kirk ball hog or not he was still a good scorer
I’m here after Rasheed Wallace, put him in his starting lineup
Nuggets consistently doing their all time greats dirty.
#NuggetsAllDay
Dude has no flash I guess that’s why he’s so underrated
You have to look at points per possession to say that they were best offense or worst defense, not in how many points are scored/allowed per game. High scoring games only show that they played at a fast pace which somewhat diminishes his statistical achievements. Anyway, thanks for the vid :)
at the end...what really determines your dominance in scoring depends on the amount of total points that you dropped during the regular season...not points per game...the real scoring titles are the ones that lead the league in the total points during the regular season and not average
Caroline made!
So he was the 80's version of Demar Derozen (situation not playstyle)
Alex was best ever
Alex English is at least top 45 all time. Also, those 80s Denver teams were great.
Had they brought him back for his final year, he would've played under THE System of Paul Westhead. I can only wonder how he would've fared.
My middle school gym is named after him
I’m here because of the coach asking his students who scored the most points in the 80s
His athleticism was always a mile high
that was clever
Hahaa! Dance Gavin Dance baby!! Downtown battle mountain twooo
He runs and shoots like the Iceman George Gervin of the S.A. Spurs.
He was a soft shooter , no big effort and no noise made but he put a lot of baskets just like Gervin.
Brandon Ingram should watch his film
I’m late please excuse me Caine
all good man lol. thanks for supporting the channel.
I know he is also poet.
It's easy to see how valuable he was to the Nuggets when Bernie Bickerstaff, as GM, decided they didn't need him. The Nuggets collapsed and went into what felt like perpetual rebuilding mode.
Is Alex English or Carmelo Anthony the best player for the Nuggets all time
Alex English is my uncle we call him Uncle Flick btw my name s Emani English so you have more proof I know he went to usc went to bucks pacers and nuggets in 1980s want more proof?
The start of this video sounds like you're talking about Jokic lol
alex english is my cousin and my dads
He looks like JR Smith
The highest release ever. Unblockable when he’s hot
40 yrs later Nicola jokic showed up and took over
Notice how MGay was too scared to guard him
55% FG is unheard of from a guard. Only Derrick White from the Spurs could do that a few times a season.
he wasn't a guard tho
21.5 ppg shooting 50.7% as a career avg? Holy shit talk about underrated. That’s better than Kobe lmao
A walking Bucket..
Yo I met him he’s my aunts boyfriend and I got his signature
How is Alex English underrated he made the All Star team a lot years. The Nuggets were an offensive team that score alot of points, but he was not that effective. Tell me this of his contemporaries who would you want English over? Worthy, Bird, Bernard King, Wilkins, Dantley, Aguirre, Marcus Johnson.
Yup, all of them. Everyone except Magic, Bird, and Isaiah.
