Mark Jackson: One of the NBA's all time greatest passers | Forgotten Player Profiles

  • Mark "Action" Jackson was a New York playground legend whose flashy play, tenacity and love for the game would take him all the way to the NBA. Although he had a 17 year career that saw him retire #2 on the NBA career assists list, his career wasn't as smooth as it may appear. In today's video, I hope to give you a better idea of why one of the top assist men in NBA had a borderline journeyman career.

Yao Ming once said in an interview back in China after he retired - of all the players he had played with, Marc Jackson is the best passer in terms of he always passing the ball at the best timing to and making it comfortable for the big dude to catch and shoot or go to the basket. Respect to the OG point guard.

@freezedatakeover I'm not sure. I didn't watch the Jazz so closely, but I dont remember it that way. Looking at the stats...
Holy sht, at age 40, Stockton's PER, VORP and WS/48 were better than Mark Jackson's career bests.
Assist to turnover ratio of 3.5 for Stock, vs 2.5 for Jackson.
Their minutes were 27.5 vs 18, for context.
Jackson was shooting at a shade under 40%. That's really poor. 28% from 3.
Stockton was at 48% and 36.5%.
Stock was getting about 11pts and 8asts. So similar to some of Jackson's prime years.
Stocktons Defensive win shares were still good at 2.2, about double Jackson's, and almost quadruple the steals.
So Stockton was scoring, passing and defending similar to Jackson's prime, and bringing value advanced stats value better than Jackson's career best.
Looks like Jackson was full of sh, and had absolutely no business doing anything but supporting Stockton.

As a Warrior I respect the shit out of Marc Jackson. He guided the young Warriors back to the playoffs. And it just took off from there unfortunately without him. He preached offense through defense. Jackson was there very first person to see "greatness" was no joke! I totally have no problem with giving Marc a little credit for GSW's dynasty run! 💯 😎

I remember Mark with my Knicks and then on our then-rival Pacers. He was a genius floor general and had insane court vision. Not too much of a scorer but he could give you a few points when he got hot. But I'd always heard he was very hard to get along with, supposedly not a good locker room guy. I like your channel, hope you keep promoting it. Another forgotten player who could have been great is Michael Jordan's former coach on both the Bulls and Wizards - Doug Collins. He was the #1 pick in the draft in '73 and had a couple really good years early on but just couldn't stay healthy. Could have been an all-time GREAT scorer. He was nearly always hurt and still managed to avg 18 points for his career. He only played in a little over 400 games, only playing 3 full seasons - but was still a 4 time all-star.

Mark Jackson was an assist master who let his teammates do all of the scoring on the court. I give him credit for turning the Golden State Warriors into championship contenders once again as a coach. The NBA didn’t treat him well and they didn’t respect him as a great coach despite the winning records.

Besides him being in Utah that's an issue for another Mark Jackson with a great floor general they don't make them anymore but I also called him Tony dungey the reason why I call him that is because of what happened with him when he was in Tampa Bay Mark Jackson was at Golden State and they got rid of him but he the one that built the team and it's sad that he won't get a ring for a building that team but he's definitely a good announcer on the sports I like him for that I like him for that how come Indiana so I got a chance to see him play a lot and if it wouldn't bring him the pacers history wouldn't be where it's at besides the ABA days so I salute I just wish that they had Golden State never done him like that at least let him have have one ring out of that deal

First two seasons on the knicks he was a straight beast.. Clippers he was great. Denver he was more of a scorer too. Pacers he was back to full time facilitating floor general. East Coast basketball. Mark was best under Rick Pitino run and gun style. Pitino left and Mark came in out of shape because he was nursing his surgically repaired knee. From the prior season.. Then he had the conflict with management over comments he made about Mo Cheeks. That was the downfall.. Knicks management rode him hard until Pat Riley showed up and they made him marketable enough to trade…
