  • A short and sharp mission to break in the latest recruit in the British ranks.
My heartfelt thanks to Russ Miller and family whose splendid gift made this mission possible, and to Sarah Miller for the amazing artwork! 🙂

Greetings Andrew or should I now say Sgt. Choong! Sounds like you and family enjoyed a wonderful holiday season and hopefully the New Year is off to a superb start as well. Certainly wonderful to see Up Front return to The Channel and a nice surprise to see your namesake taking a crack at the squad leader position. This can be one of gallantry & glory or peril & perishing as borne out by the result of this mission, which felt indicative of the British 46th Division assaulting the Southwestern portion of the Gustav Line in early Jan 43. BTW - nice work in crafting this assault scenario with a 1 deck limit to enhance the urgency and the need to preface caution with aggressiveness come what may. As they say, "Fortune favors the bold" (unless they are dead) or some such thing. Anyway, looking forward to seeing more of Sgt. Choong and the lads in the days to come, hopefully in a set of missions or mini campaign.
And briefly from this side of the Atlantic, Santa delighted me with 2 wonderful new games - Flying Fortress Leader and Western Front Ace (how did he know???) which put my SASL campaign on hiatus and have consumed my table for the past month before being displaced by none other than the classic Victory Games Ambush & Modules. Those have been collecting dust in my games case for 30+ years and I forgot how entertaining they are. That said, I’m sure that Up Front & SASL will return to my table sooner than not to continue the campaigns in progress and will be sure to keep you posted on developments. Cheers!

Hello Jeff! A belated Happy New Year to you and yours too! I hope you had a great time over the holidays too. Yes, it was great to do an 'Up Front' video again, even if I did get my posterior convincingly handed to me on my first outing 🤣🤣. The game has been seeing a lot of play off camera and as we are now rolling into 1944 I would like to kick off some more short campaigns. At some point I would also like to get those Wargame Vault action card sets for jungle and desert scenarios. In any case, Sgt Choong will return, even if it does result in Sgt Vasey yelling and tearing his hair out!
Santa has done you a real solid, there! Fantastic about those games and I'm glad you're enjoying them so much. Reviews of 'Flying Fortress Leader' are very positive and I'm quite keen to give it a try and see how it lines up next to 'B-17; Queen Of The Skies'. I found myself in possession of 'Quartermaster General' and a couple of its expansions (the older version of the game). I have played it before and it's good to have my own copies. Thanks, Santa! Hope you're enjoying your revisit of 'Ambush', and I really look forward to hearing how you're getting on 🙂 All Best!

    Andrew,
Happy New Year and thanks again.
I love the artwork. What an absolutely delightful gift.
This one reminded me of my grandfather who was in the British Army in Italy at that time. Although not the exact same scenario he did have a story about an encounter with a German machine gun. He was in some kind of advanced party when they walked into a machine gun post. All of the British with the exception of my grandfather jumped or scrambled to one side. Unfortunately they didn't survive. My grandfather lept in the opposite direction. Fortunately he survived, unfortunately he landed in a former latrine. The machine gun post continued to be manned, he had no idea what else was out there and so he was forced stay in the latrine for a few days until the main force arrived.
Enjoy the rest of the week.
    Best wishes,
    Doug

      Hi Doug,
A very Happy New Year to you too!
Goodness, your grandfather had a mighty close shave there, and what an appalling experience! The latrine element just adds insult to injury, really, but I'm glad he made it out of that situation eventually.
      All Best,
      Andrew

      Andrew,
After reading your reply it occured to me that I may have just shared a story that's a bit too grim for your channel. If you would prefer me to delete it then please let me know, no offence will be taken.
I didn't hear the story until around 40 years after the event, by which time it had become somewhat of a family anecdote about the misfortune of the laterine. It may be that the brutal reality of the experience comes through a little stronger in writing than I had realised.
      All the best,
      Doug

      Hi Doug,
Many thanks for your message. No, I don't think it's too grim at all. As far as I'm concerned, it is in the end all about brave people and what they have endured. While we have a lot of fun playing simulation wargames, I see it as a way of keeping the real life experiences in our hearts and minds and not forgetting the efforts of those the game represents. So, yes, I'm actually quite honoured when war stories surface and are shared :)
      All Best,
      Andrew
