Hey everyone, I know you all are waiting for Part 3 of the N64 Portable build. Unfortunately, Ben has hit some major snags and he has decided to step back from the project for a while until he can come up with some new ways to approach the problem. He WILL return to the build, but it probably will not be for a while. Thanks for being patient! Even the best hardware hackers struggle sometimes!
Thank you for the communication Karen! While not the news we wanted to hear, I am glad you are clear about the situation. I would love to see videos talking about projects that have gone wrong. Sometimes this channel only shows the highlights of a project which dilutes the reality that Ben deals with on the daily: uncharted territory.
I agree. I'd like to see a video about the problems incurred. Seeing those problems trouble shooted is more interesting than a project that goes together perfectly. It could be the Apollo 13 of Heck builds
GREAT plans guys and i love where you're going with the channel! i wasn't that excited about the projects but when you went into more detail they actually sound really exciting! really looking forward to watching it all develop. good luck and lots of love!
For the Hackmaji what about using RCA cables? They're obsolete, abundant, provide sturdy contacts, and you can split them up into thirds. Also, they have a signal and a ground line. So, you could make dual signal connections. Or, consider using cheap Stereo Audio Jacks, you could make a half-normalled patch bay.
I would happily back every one of these on Kickstarter. For Hackmanji, if you recall those old Radio Shack electronic projects kits, they used bare wires with "spring" terminals. Seemed pretty robust back then, and you can always make more on your own. Also, I find Felix's dry wit and nonchalance in the presence of Ben friggin' hilarious.
Ben, I would love it if you could look into the possibility of an HDMI output, for the PS Vita. I know it's not hugely popular, but I would love to be able to output my video, so I could stream it. I've heard it might be possible, in the existing hardware
You could try spring terminals for the Logic Bomb. When I was a kid I had a toy that let you "make" simple electronics by running tinned wires from spring contact to spring contact. It stood up to me as a kid and it was easy to get more or replacement wire as all that was needed was a stripped end.
I know it would get (much) more expensive, but it would be super duper cool if you added a dot matrix display, like those on pinball machines, to the hackmanji board. So that it would present you the puzzles and the results and overall be more exciting! It would be nice if you added that to the mini pinball machine as well, but if you want to make that thing customizable, it could be a problem. Also, i don't think you should simplify the mini pinball even more. It took you guys a long time to come up with that, but once you have a product, it could be something relatively fast and easy to assemble, if that's the problem. Because, you know, you have to have flippers, ramps, targets, and please oh please slingshots (and bumpers?). We need to see the ball being kicked around. But you could have some sort of universal playfield where you could put those features in a few different configurations. But yeah, no 3d prints.
Yeah that's true. Hopefully they won't leave cliffhangers from now on like they did with the N64. I've been waiting in anticipation for it for 3 weeks now and still hasn't come! hah
Yeah I know they did and usually they do multiple episodes but at the end of ep. 2 they said the 3rd and final one would be a week out, which was 3 weeks ago. Hence: the reason for my comment.
Right in, ya I did kinda figure that too. I remember now them saying it was one of the hardest systems to modify. Just hoping they don't give up on it lol
I know the answer is most likely "not on your life," but.... Could the answer to the mini pinball table issues be, perhaps, to go the electro-mechanical route rather than solid state? Solid State is simpler design-wise, I'd imagine, but a mechanical unit might open up the option to have a much more tinker-centric design to everything and mean that the majority of the internal parts can be sourced ready-to-go from manufacturers already (cogs, worm gears, etc.) Maybe the answer is to start with something like LEGOs (since you already want that influence,) and study how their mechanical pieces in the Technic line could be adapted into a pinball table, and just work on making that smaller and smaller until it fits your size criteria and can be produced with already-available parts (or a minimum of custom ones at least.) For example: the flippers on a table as small as you're looking to produce don't really need to be actuated, but could be wholly mechanical in their function and require a minimum of parts to put together (a couple of gears and axles and that's kinda it.) Just, you know, little changes like that would add up to a product that is extremely customize-able on the user end, easy to break down on the creator's end (for flat packing,) and requires no software whatsoever to muck about with in either case.
I was kind of hoping you would revisit the 3 in 1 z80 console that plays games from three different z80 based consoles. That was really interesting and it was left unfinished. I don't think you even connected controllers
Yes , More Detail and LONGER term Builds, IS GREAT, I was really upset when you started shorting the detail. I even unsubscribed and stop watching show because of the builds being shorted, go to know your back on track, I will resubscribe now so far.
Fine, change the format, but I've been waiting for the N64 Part 3.... why have we had a highlight / recap episode last week and pretty much another recap this week?
For the mini-pinball, what about looking for source parts from actual distributors such as Happ controls? I used to work on some pinball & video games. some of the pinball games had smaller pop-ups and flipper assemblies for pinball games with an upper deck.
On mini-pinball; you should try to find a way of making a .PSD background template library that the user community can contribute to and then other folks can download. Then if I want a 'Firefly' template I can just download one someone else made.
Just had an idea that might help with the hackmanji: Some toys (like the Electronic Monopoly Bank) use bumped cards as a cheap imitation of actual swipe/chip-cards. If you could key the plugs (creating, for example, a 4-bit pattern out of the bumps) then you wont need to worry about the connectivity. but, on the other hand, it might require too much redesigning the game.
with hackmanji you could do away with the answer light and just reverse the result. so if the answer is to turn off the result have it lit up and vice versa. maybe using a rgb led would help as well.
It's something we're considering. The downside is that they aren't SMD, so it's more expensive to have them populated onto a PCB. It'll depend on how many we need.
I've been looking everywhere and tried every tutorial and I can't get my WiFi to work on raspian OS. I had to USB tether inter to my raspberry pi 3 to get it update the system and it still doesn't work. It keeps saying my WiFi wlan0 is not associated. Can you make a quick video or show me a link that will actually work! I found only 1 line of code that actually worked to get my WiFi working on a previous raspian OS(same problem I'm having now) but I can't find that line of command anywhere.
why there are too many source holes? only one hole for "1" and only one hole for "0" is enough I think, when it needed to use multiple 1s and 0s it can be obtained by stackable cables
Holy shit guy, that beard looks positively EPIC! Please tell me you're growing it out further and making it nice and thick? I can see the "Ben is evolving into Collin" comments coming already :) Cheers dudes and dudettes, thanks for sharing!
My favourite intro was the one where:Ben was a mild mannered graphics design artist until he was bitten by the electronics bug, now every week on the element 14's the Ben heck show ............. Which was your favourite, anyone?
Awww.....I loved the old intro......*pretends to be sad......Did they ever find their dragons?? xD Regrettable acting or not....still love the content from this show :)

Dang it - I was so ready for the conclusion and to see that thing working! Something to look forward to!
The N64 has defeated Ben!!! Nooooo!!
So what you're saying is, don't try to build an N64 portable?
Thank you for the communication Karen! While not the news we wanted to hear, I am glad you are clear about the situation. I would love to see videos talking about projects that have gone wrong. "Amazing hacks"
Me: Where are my drag-- oh...
I come here for the dragons and the regrettable acting. I am disappointed.
I want to live in a world where Ben wants to live in a world with Star Wars again again.
I know, I was so disappointed!
I was just sharing something funny, I think it's good that they update the intro every once in a while.
I want to live in a world where Felix looks awkward at Ben again!
This is exciting! I like the new format and viewer interaction. I'm looking forward to this year's projects.

There is a typo at 2:27
A small request.... a little nod to Bill Paxton with some sort of addition to the Bill Paxton pinball machine. :)
I'm definitely most excited about the glue gun
GaudyMarko they are already made. They have been made for awhile.
You could try spring terminals for the Logic Bomb.
When I was a kid I had a toy that let you "make" simple electronics by running tinned wires from spring contact to spring contact. It stood up to me as a kid and it was easy to get more or replacement wire as all that was needed was a stripped end.
That's what Ben was thinking. We may end up going that way.
Use 3.5mm TRS/TS cables. That's what they use on synths.
Pinball x3!
And where are, "Where are my dragons?"?!
I know it would get (much) more expensive, but it would be super duper cool if you added a dot matrix display, like those on pinball machines, to the hackmanji board. So that it would present you the puzzles and the results and overall be more exciting!

You guys haven't even finished the N64 portable yet... is that going to turn into your 'year long build'?!
Yeah that's true. Hopefully they won't leave cliffhangers from now on like they did with the N64. I've been waiting in anticipation for it for 3 weeks now and still hasn't come! hah
They openly said that at the beginning of the episode that it was going to be a build spread over a few episodes.
Yeah I know they did and usually they do multiple episodes but at the end of ep. 2 they said the 3rd and final one would be a week out, which was 3 weeks ago. Hence: the reason for my comment.
haha

At the end, when you're talking about the projects and the element14 stuff, is that a screensaver of a planetary gearset in the background?
Hello Ben i was wondering on the Hackmanji what if you use smaller leds maybe a 3mm size that will save some space.
Love the new intro, much more concise.
mini Bill Paxton pinball. it would be a nice tribute to a good man. rip bill
One more week without N64 --'
yay another video talking about future videos
You could replace the connectors of the logic game by backlit touch-sensors. :)
Fine, change the format, but I've been waiting for the N64 Part 3.... why have we had a highlight / recap episode last week and pretty much another recap this week?

at 7:36 does Ben say "I fucked"?

for the logic bomb connectors, wouldn't audio connectors work well? they're small and durable. maybe an eighth-inch connector?
It's something we're considering. The downside is that they aren't SMD, so it's more expensive to have them populated onto a PCB. It'll depend on how many we need.
I want that glue gun! Please make that a kickstarter!
The Killer Spud Go buy one then. they are already made.
Plugs for the Logic Bomb game? Use standard TRS plugs (like on headphones). Those shoulld be inexpensive.
1/8 in mono patch cables like used in eurorack synths are about $2. Is that less than the banana plug cables?
How long till the Switch teardown?
I've been looking everywhere and tried every tutorial and I can't get my WiFi to work on raspian OS. A modular mini pinball kit sounds awesome!
You need to do your withe balance between the 2 cameras...
I would think the labels for the LED lights in Hackmonji would be source, result, and target.
why there are too many source holes? only one hole for "1" and only one hole for "0" is enough I think, when it needed to use multiple 1s and 0s it can be obtained by stackable cables
Hackmanji: Translucent plastic ring around the jacks could be used like a light pipe.
Buddy Can you teach us how to build fixed old digital camera on old helmets with voice commands radio.
would you Pleeeeeeeease make a video about midi electronic drums?!
love your videos, keep up the great work
Add fart noises to the hot glue gun trigger
how about an automatic soder for pcbs
I like the new idea! Good luck!
_"I want to live Ina world with Star wars again!!!"_
not the same without it.
you can do it using cards just like the ENIAC. punch cards that can be scanned in slots.
Holy shit guy, that beard looks positively EPIC! Please tell me you're growing it out further and making it nice and thick? I can see the "Ben is evolving into Collin" comments coming already :)
Cheers dudes and dudettes, thanks for sharing!
why not make a dual 4g/GSM module that uses both networks simultaneously so you can keep signal no matter where you go?
OH AND HDMI ON IT PLEASE BEN
I think announcement videos should be uploaded separately.
Nice Uniball, that is my favorite pen as well!
physical toys are pretty much obsolete, but the glue gun is cool
My fears are calmed. I thought this would be the equivalent of a RUclips clip show
~3:32 - Heck yeah, Karen, quality control!
Felix was killing it in this video :D
My favourite intro was the one where:Ben was a mild mannered graphics design artist until he was bitten by the electronics bug, now every week on the element 14's the Ben heck show ............. Which was your favourite, anyone?
God I love Felix, he is so chill
I was sad when I didn't see the "I want to live in a world with Star Wars again" scene in the intro... **Insert frowny face**
use a micrcontroller and switches to digitally join wires.
No, really, these are the three choices?
Are we going to get a nintendo switch laptop?
or give the .stl files for the 3d printed parts for the mini pinball or the solidworks file
"Super glue gun build... previously on this build.." *TIME TRAVELS BACK TO 1890 - BEN HECK WEARS WIZARDS ROBES.. LIGHTNING FIRES FROM THE SKIES * wat?
I have an idea for a project a router with a built-in NAS.
That mini pinball should have a back glass.
OMG THAT SCREENSAVER!
why not make it a touch screen
Ben doesn't have to make the Switch handheld, it's already one
you should make a video on a cheap musical tesla coil
New intro! YAY!!
With the logic bomb you could go more the size of that old 70s or 80s electronic football game.
i cannot wait for pinball
I would definately buy the glue gun if it becomes a product!
What's wrong with Felix? He looks as if someone told him that he has two days to live out of which he'll have to spend 1.5 days on the work
Why not modify an existing automatic glue gun? The manufacturer has already figured out the motors and heaters.
Super cheap Hackmonji connectors; The "200 in 1 Electronic Project Kit" from the 80's comes to mind.
Awww.....I loved the old intro......*pretends to be sad......Did they ever find their dragons?? xD
Regrettable acting or not....still love the content from this show :)
/inb4 "whurs n64 part 3"
the glue gun is the best idea to move forward
Karen's part of the new intro made me lol :)
Where are my Dragons?
I miss Allison :(
He looks way better with the beard
I miss Alison
Felix "take it for a spin".... lol
1:54 Karen you're killing us!
The hot glue gun I would buy from Ben!
for hackmanji use aux jacks or banana plugs
Use head phone jacks and aux cords for the hackmanji
9:12 Uh-oh, Felix the Tank Engine has taken over!
So did the portable 64 disappear?
Can you make a home game console that play all the old games from snes to ps1 and so on
One question: When will you release part 3 of N64 portable?
The next portable/laptop you should make is in GameCube laptop there's a chip you can get for the GameCube make play though HDMI
