The original mini pinball machine used a Teensy 3.2 MCU and a lot of hand-soldered components. The major parts in the original unit are a battery, an audio SD card that could be replaced with the 12-bit DAC built into Teensy 3.6, a volume knob that can be removed, and a start button that can be removed as well. After analyzing the original pinball machine, Ben and Felix test out 8 different sizes of balls. The original ball they used for their pinball machine was too light and floaty.
The surface mounted MOSFET Ben looks at is n-channel 80 volts and 39 amps which should be plenty for this project. A MOSFET is a metal oxide semiconductor that can switch powerful loads. After that Ben and Felix take out there meter to measure the charge on various battery packs. Felix breaks out a breadboard to do some solenoid testing. The hope is that they can use one size of small solenoid for everything on the mini pinball. Felix goes over a circuit diagram of everything they’ve wired up. It has 12 volts coming in, the VVD has 12 volts coming in, a diode, a solenoid that goes into the drain of the MOSFET, a switch that’s going to 5 volts, 5 volts comes into the gate, and there is a 10K pulldown resistor on the gate as well that goes to ground, and then the source of the gate goes to ground. The MOSFET allows them to control high current loads with regular TTL level signals (like a MCU).
While Felix mocks up a MOSFET test, Ben works on physical stuff such as what type of ball will work best. In the earlier project Ben was really hung up on making it to scale like a pinball machine but comes to realize that was a mistake because the physics didn’t scale correctly. The original mini pinball was 1:2 scale of a real machine. By rigging up a foam core mock-up they can scale for much more than just size. Ben scales the ball up, scales up the angle, and then uses a weaker solenoid.
Karen helps Ben with the models for the flippers to test for the mini pinball game and uses this experience to learn how to use Fusion 360 because she wants to get into 3D modeling. She starts by creating a couple of different circles in her sketch. They want the flippers to be approximately an inch and three quarters. She gives an overview of what she’s doing and how Fusion 360 makes calculations. After she’s done designing, they will 3D print her flippers, put it on the game, and see how it works. Before they do that, Ben takes Karen’s basic flipper design and turns it into another body and adds additional features. Meanwhile Felix is wiring up MOSFET controls so they can try out both flippers and put some things on the mock-up playfield to get an idea for what size is best. They’ll look at the strength of the flippers, the size of the solenoid, the length of the flippers, the size of the ball, the tilt of the playfield, and how deep it is. They’re going to mix all those together and try to make a playfield that is not too big but one that is more playable and has more control and weight as opposed to the original version where the ball is just flying all over the place.

Nice episode, I enjoy it when you guys go over the design process more and also adding small bits that would usually be hidden away like the way Felix was testing the solenoids, or the design of the flippers.

If you added a slot to your flipper, you could add an o-ring (stretched around the perimeter of the flipper). This would be more like the full-sized machines.
You can also use trig to determine the length of the flipper pivot that attaches to the solenoid. If the solenoid throw is .5 inches and the angle is 50 degrees, then the length of the lever is .5 / sin(50), or ~.6527 inches. I have a handy cheat sheet for triangles written on the first page of my notebook. I just look at the diagram and decide what missing factor I want to know, then look through the list of formulas to see what matches the known and unknown.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but wouldn't making the flipper hollow mean you're moving less mass and therefore delivering more kinetic energy. I know it seems like such a small amount of material would be removed in grams, but in percentage terms it could be enough to get you the Oomph you need. [Oomph - that's a technical term - ask Felix if you're unfamiliar :)]
Awesome showing Fusion 360 step by steps! Perhaps do a whole video just on that? Show the whole process including exporting it to the 3D printer, etc.

The snack bar close to my childhood home put the back-legs of its pinball machine (as opposed to the slot machine most others had) on some heavy-duty 4x4s to make them more challenging. So I was thinking that it might increase your mileage if you made the backside hight-adjustable.

What about using the VN66AF MOSFETS on a heavy duty metal heatsink should work perfectly, I hope that you have the G-Code generator and compiler are installed otherwise it won't work out.
Now THIS is a project that will have a lot of appeal and I want to build one. Please spend the time and make this a quality build kit (or regular / premium versions). Battery operation is unimportant to me. I would favor having enough power for solenoids, etc. over limiting battery operation. I have a 3D printer and a lot of your viewers likely do as well and can print my own parts. It would be cool to invite a local pinball designer to help/critique the game play/flow like Steve Ritchie / Pat Lawlor, etc. That would be a great episode!! LIKE x 100!!!
You should make the flipper circumference fit a standard rubber band size.

Do an episode on finding your standard components like MOSFET's, resistors, caps, etc on Element14 for the cheapest price. I've always found seemingly the same component can vary significantly in price. My approach is always to go to SparkFun first then search other sites to see if they have the same part cheaper. Consider what a beginner would think when searching "MOSFET" on element14 then being left with the ~10,000 product choices and a list of categories that never seem to line up to what you think you're doing.
You should use the basic pocket computer you made ages ago to test the components on this pinball table. Since it's one of its use cases you demonstrated back then. :)

Go crazy, add some superconductor material to the ball and make it float in some surface of the pinball with magnets
Or just make the ball a magnet and use electromagnet coils within the board, then you could also trigger magnetic based events for the game.
I'm pretty sure I've seen some pinball games use this as a ball hold within the board, rather than using a physical stop.

pinball machines are gravity operated machines, you can scale the size, but you can't scale gravity.
Could also add magnetism for additional pull where gravity lacks the force.

Does fusion360 not have a tangent correlation function?
It has a tangent constraint, which I think may be what you're asking. You can create lines that are tangent to the circles and then set the distance between these lines (effectively setting the distance between the outsides of the circles).
Good! I've never used 360 because of the inability to store files locally, so I didn't know.

ColdShoulderMedia Ah, I'm not the biggest fan of online storage only either, though in my case I was eventually able to stomach it. Fusion 360 tries to make everything reasonably intuitive and lets you snap to all sorts of things automatically (though you can turn that feature off)- for that reason it does seem confusing at first that you cannot snap to the top of a circle automatically, so I can see why Karen was thrown off. Probably more than anything she just isn't too comfortable applying constraints yet, but after following some more tutorials I'm sure she'll get how they function.
What pushed you to start using 360?

Constraints are quite a blast to use- I love how they make a lot of seemingly difficult things into trivial tasks. I'm learning Fusion 360 since I wanted to learn modelling for the purpose of 3d printing. Beyond simply being interested in 3d printing itself, I'm very interested in how it can complement electronics based projects (such as with Arduino). As for why I picked Fusion 360 over another modelling software- it's almost entirely due to the (lack of a) price. The 3d printing community apparently often touts it as the best parametric modeler that's free for hobbyists. I do want to learn Solidworks due to it being the industry standard for Engineers, but I will not be a student for much longer and cannot afford a Solidworks Licence.

@The Ben Heck Show: why haven't you guys built a full size pinball machine.
Bens made a quite a few of them and if you check his old website he has some articles on it. Its just not what made him popular in the first place online so he only brings pinball games out every once in a while. Even his online forum was all about the portable consoles and the book he wrote about converting Gen1/2 consoles to portables. (Very old benheck forum member here lol)
Connecting the diameter chord of two circles is an inferior design to finding two lines tangent to both circles. A good learning exercise for you guys is to do a find a way in fusion to do the flipper with smooth tangential lines instead of taking out a chuck of the larger circle as it seems you've done. It will look less hacked up. This is a great project can't wait to see how it comes out!
They have at least 2 pinball machines. Pinball design is a craft....not anybody can do it. The two pinball machines are the Paranormal EVP ghost hunting machine and the...sad to say now...The Bill Paxton pinball machine. I believe the Bill Paxton was just for fun, but the Ghost hunting one was a limited commercial release, that a lot of people are bad mouthing. It is difficult to make a pinball machine, which is why they are generally selling for $5,000 dollars new. Used ones can go for more then that.

I've never seen a lipo with balance wires being wrong for the number of cells, even china batteries. I also use Turnigy batteries, same maker of the ones in the video. I can 100% without a doubt say that is a 4 cell battery.
