    I remember having a class project in my sophomore year where we controlled our own countries. The countries were randomly selected via generator and I was given Turkmenistan. I formed Turkmenistan into a military powerhouse and ended up invading all the territories near me before NATO saw me as a threat and stomped me out •-• RIP Glorious Turkmenistan military, you will be missed...

      Aidan Lappin Basically you formed alliances, made enemies, traded with other nations and the battles were determined by basic military strength so of course NATO would absolutely demolish Turkmenistan

      J. Ruiz thinking back to civ 5, the only thing that’s stopping my warlike friend from invading me is focusing trade with him. Invade me and his economy crash, low happiness and rebellion threaten his empire.
      So, was there a way to stop your advances for war?

    Jon, I don't know what kind of sources you have, but Kaliningrad is not "tiny", it really is the size it is portrayed in the game. It's actually slightly bigger than Nothern Ireland. And total population of the area is almost a million people (significantly more than 40 thousand you said).

    Kaliningrad used to be called Königsberg as was part of Prussia and then Germany. USSR took it off the Germans after WWII and deported all the Germans, destroyed the Prussian culture there and replaced them with Russians. Similar to what they did with a group of Japanese islands, which is why Russia and Japan are still technically at war from WWII as they never signed a peace treaty due to the disputed islands.

      @johannesandreasgribfibiger6677 8 лет назад +18

      Themuffinman 123 Meh, we could argue that the destruction of the Prussian culture came not long after the First World War when the SPD gained control of the Prussian House of Representatives. Of course, Prussia's king at that time , Wilhelm tried to retain kingship which was not applicable under the constitution. After that the situation continued on a constant negative gradient once it became part of the Weimar Republic ( known as the Republic of Prussia which we couldn't really call a republic )

    • @mowtow90
      @mowtow90 8 лет назад +43

      Not only. Over 350 000 people ware evacuated from East Prussia by the Wehrmacht. They knew what was coming. The Russians wanted vengeance for what the Germans did in their territory. There are horror stories from Berlin after the war. The fist question woman ware asking each other every time they met was "how many" - not how many relatives survived - how many times they ware raped by Russians since the last time they met. The same thing was going in Königsberg . The Russians deported all Germans from the area and demolished everything. I'm not sure if there is any Prussian statue even left there and replaced everything with Russian settlers. They considered this a punishment for Germany for invading them.

    • @nickdziura7373
      @nickdziura7373 8 лет назад +22

      Themuffinman 123 technically they arent at war because the Russian Federation was never at war with Japan, so Japan is at war with a non existant country

      mowtow90 Quite similar to what the Macedonians did to Persia when they invaded Persepolis in 330 BCE as a revenge for the destruction of Athens in the Persian Wars. Many argue that this consolidated the existence of the Eastern Roman Empire known as Byzantium later.

      Or it was wrong because for 8 years Russia forced the Donbas to remain within Ukraine. But sure lets pretend like NATO expansion from Germany in 1991 wasn't at all against the agreement to james baker and US government made to the russians.
      Thats OK, I am sure all the soon to be cold citizens in europe cutting their nose off to spite their face are super happy with washingtons proxy war to destabilize europe and weaken russia. Nothing is better than watching europe implode because their 'friend' is charging them 5 times or higher for LNG that is ruining their economies and draining their coffers.
      But hey as long as the USA gets oil and gas from Canada at a major discount, they can continue to offset their exports to europe for major profits. The 'North American energy platform'

    Kaliningrad was actually, prior to 1945, part of Germany. It used to be called Konigsberg (literally Kingstown) and was the capital of the state of Prussia, the ancestral home of the Junker ruling class of the old German Empire. However, when the Soviets invaded Germany in 1945, the Germans in Prussia fled for their lives, and the region was de-germanized. After the war, the USSR was given Konigsberg and its surrounding area, while Poland got the rest of Prussia.
    Also, the Netherlands' army trains in tandem with the Germans, it seems, for there are many Dutch-German coalition units (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I._German/Dutch_Corps), so thats probably why the game wants you to have an Alliance with the Netherlands.

      Half a day of work for a game you'll sink hundreds of hours into? Worth.
      Maybe he could try EU4 aswell, 1 and a half days worth of work for a game to sink thousands of hours into and still find out new things and get better at the game without it becoming boring.
      Of course, Paradox also constantly puts their games on sale, so it's not actually that expensive if you wait for a sale.

    I'm expecting you to try Europa 4 now. Since you like historical strategy games and enjoy it when the game throws a spreadsheets of information at you, I think u would love the game. Total war is my favourite series because u are so passionate about the game and love the history it's based around. Europa allows you to be any nation present in the world during the late 15 century and play until the early 19 century, it is a very detailed game.

    Luxemburg and the Netherlands have a similar flag becquse luxemburg was a province of the netherlands and only reached independence after belgium broke free.

Fun fact, my family comes from Lithuania, and my great grandfather was actually forced into the Russian navy when the Russians came in and took over Lithuania. he survived all the way through world war 2 only to be killed by a truck in america trying to hitchhike to reunite with his family. (maybe fun wasn't the right word, but iv always found it an interesting bit of my family history.)

    Aw.. i wished you would have dived into the depth of (the purely cold-war- military) game of "Wargame - European Escalation" (or its follow-ups), cause i kind of love/hate its wealth of units and possible ways of achieving the mission-goals. And i liked to have seen your approach to it. But one can´t have everything and this is nice as well. Your a game-mechanics-scanning-genious, and you truly reached a perfect pro-level of commenting in a fun way at the same time.

    I tried playing as a small country and it felt kinda impossible.
    You start with income of about 30 money per month given fortunate world economy and as soon as you implement a couple of policies - their upkeep takes that away and debt starts folding onto itself.
    Only thing you can do is idle waiting for GDP to grow until you are destroyed by nearest superpower.

    I remember there was a strategy game just like that in the late 90's, called "Superpower 2", in which you could choose any country in the world and it also had a large amount of depth (I believe all the data pertaining to each country came from a CIA database or something). I remember it was quite easy to turn your country into a powerhouse, just by investing large amounts of money in education for a period of time. Who knew?
    By looking up the name of this game, I found out it even has a Steam Edition.

    "Whipped cream front" for denmark in ww2. The danish were given warning of the invasion and surrendered without either side losing troops after a 2 hour "Invasion". This gave them time to export most of their jews and such, and after that they spent the war making their place a vacation resort for the garrison to try and make them as nice an occupation as possible until the war ended. It worked reasonably well as the german garrison were quite a lot less likely to cause trouble when they were busy eating danish sweets.

    If I remember correctly, Kaliningrad used to be Koeningsburg - one of the most culturally significant areas of Prussia, and Germany as a whole - aside from access to the Baltic Sea - when the Soviets took it at the end of WW2, they used it as an opportunity to essentially “deculturise” it. Essentially like France taking London and removing all traces of British culture (could be wrong about this, but that’s how I’ve understood it)
