- Suzerain is a fascinatingly deep political simulator about trying to keep your nation alive in a world where your biggest neighbour wants to destroy you, the world superpowers want to exploit you, and your own citizens refuse to chill out for five minutes...

"Let's go with democratic reforms, because we never said in which direction."
Thanks, I spit out my toast! 🤣
"Boy they've really sanitized the Capitalism tree..."
Even funnier how when democracy actually *does* go down the toilet, he goes "Wait no that's the wrong direction!" Is it still breaking election promises if you break your promise to be evil?
It's always a good, interesting and chaotic time when Jon is in charge of a country. Can't wait to see what happens this time.
A good time for watching. Less so for his unfortunate subjects.
Jon: Finds oil in his country.
The government of Arcasia: I'm hearing someone needs some democracy.
President Dwight Walker: This Anton Rayne makes Wiktor Smolak look like President Alvarez.
So Jon personally invested in an Arcasian technology company and then immediately grants rights to build a major railway to a company which uses said Arcasian technology..
Is it still corruption if he didn't notice?
I actually passed over videos of this game being played because it wasn’t that interesting to watch, but now I’m hooked and I’m waiting patiently to see if you’ll continue!! 👀😅 Your grasp of real world concepts also makes your play throughs just as insightful as it is interesting. I really hope we can see more of this game or similar games in the future. Anyways, wishing you all the best!!
20:10 Jon just casually doing a Franz Ferdinand move. So much for that history education you gave your character 😂
Well he wasn't stupid enough to do it in a recently conquered region, so I'd even say it was somewhat smart.
Not shutting down radicalizing parties while the economy is slowly bleeding out and is increasingly relying on foreign nations on the other hand... now that's a Weimar Republic if I've ever seen one~
That is actually the best course of action in the game
A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
Indeed
Also I did not expect to see you here
Wait you have a RUclips account in this name too??? How committed you this bit are you???
Damn funny raider Ma Zhongying playing Suzerain? Holy based!
*This needs to be a mini series plz jon!!!*
Also in this game you are literally Cold War Turkey
Pulled between the West and East due to your strategic location
Has a large historical rival who’s an absolute monarchy (Iran)
Your country was saved from civil war by a national hero who became borderline deified (Ataturk.)
And everything since has been kinda a mess.
Ah, this game has some really great writting. Both the main campaign and the DLC campaign were such a treat to play through.
Campaing?
Suzerain sounds like a game that would be interesting to play communally via twitch or youtube chat/polls.
Sordland is _roughly_ based on Cold War Turkey, with the Bluds being analogous to the Kurds and Soll with Ataturk. It's only a rough analogy though, and with every patch the world is more fleshed out in its own right. Still, there are intentional parallels.
This is a game where you fail a fair bit until you find a path that works. I haven't played for a while so all my advice would be dreadfully out of date, the game has changed quite a bit of the years with updates. Still, I have fond memories of it, I did a very centrist path and a full democratic path and I even successfully became a communist dictator without being assassinated (though I think it's harder to do now than it was when I did it).
Ah, interesting, I just assumed it was based on Latvia due to the shape of the country being essentially reverse Latvia (though obviously Latvia was part of the USSR so I guess it can't be). But I see what you're saying on the parallels to Turkey.
Wehlen is basically Iraq under Saddam Hussein
Soll and the first president, Wisci, are analogous to Ataturk. Wisci represents the “good” aspects of Ataturk (heavy modernization, bringing Republican values to Turkey, establishing many of the institutions of the country) while Ataturk represents the heavy civic nationalism, authoritarianism and state control early Turkey saw under his rule.
@@thedemonhater7748And the war crimes against specific groups.
We need more of this! I gotta see if these choices work out, rooting for ya!
This is so good, please do more.
one of the best visual novel/choose your own adventure games I've ever played. can't wait to see what this studio does next
Dang, it's not an actual game?
@@Kwisatz-Chaderach - "visual novel" wasn't the most accurate descriptor. "Text-based RPG" would be more correct.
Please let this be a livestream vote. I'd love to see more of this!
This was a fascinating watch. I think it definitely needs more coverage. The video ended as it seems like everything was about to kick off.
I certainly wouldn’t complain if this came back in a livestream.
Suzerain is incredibly deep and satisfying. I'm several playthroughs in and still discovering new things and ways to govern. Try the DLC to rule by decree, like a good ol' imperial Britain!
I’ve loved Suzerain for about 2 years now, (shoutout to my fellows in the discord) can’t wait to see you cover it
Whenever I see Jon playing one of these games and stress for hours on the first turn where everything is broken, I always want to remind him that the Weinar Republic can't be fixed in a turn 😂
Super interesting game.
I would be super-interested in seeing more of this, and in particular the effect of the first round of changes.
Yes Suzerain! It definitely needs more episodes as consequences of your choices happen in later turns.
Also don't trust everyone and give Soll and Beatrice a big middle finger !
It's very confusing as to which path to take. I did turn down the 500,000 bribe.
@@charlesfranks1902 Just stick to your ideology don't try and please everyone you cant
@@charlesfranks1902Fun Fact:If you take the bribe but don't choose Underhall for the construction project it doesn't count as corruption
@@sevendrills4326 However be warned if you agreed to create the anti-corruption task force, they’ll find out about your own corruption as well which will permanently damage your reputation and possibly get you impeached.
I've been waiting for you to play this game! I'm so excited!
It's about time you covered this! Always felt like a very Jon game
I would love for this to be a series. It gets even more interesting in the later chapters, and the DLC is great as well.
One of my favorite games. A mini series of this plus Rizia would be EPIC
The choices you make as Rayne you will be able to observe and react to as King of Rizia in the DLC
If you ever wanted to do the American system, Jon, then "The Political Process" is right up your alley.
Run for anything from local PTA Chairman all the way to President.
I've had the game years but not gotten around to it yet, but what I've seen of it is engrossing and well simulated.
i wish you would do a series for this game. Both the main game and the DLC are excellent
Jon please more of this
I'd love to see more of this!
oh man this makes me want jon to play the life and suffering of sir brante so badly, it’d be excellent
Oh poor jon, this game will very much punish you for trying to stick to the moral high ground uncompromisingly.
"I've got to be impeached!" Wonderful.
I'd love a part 2 of this! Or more?
Please continue this! This is such an amazing political story game!
Finally you played it!!
15:10 Its quite funny that you're basically taking the same approach as the German government following the reunification: doubling down on the profitable bits.
Which definitely hasn’t had any lasting problems. Just don’t look at the rise of the far-right in East Germany.
@@Ma_Zhongying I think the immigration policy may have a lot to do with that.
@@charlesfranks1902 Fascist love a scapegoat. They would have found someone else. Nothing happens in a vacuum
@@charlesfranks1902Immigration is usually very good for a nation, especially one where demographics are becoming problematic and there are a lot of vacant jobs unable to be filled by the local labour market. It's just that anti-immigration parties are playing in on fears of a deluge of people that will compromise the nations culture, which is not tangible enough to counter with good arguments and resonates with a large part of the population.
Great Britain, for example, mainly chose to enact Brexit to determine their own immigration and labour laws away from Europe's (alleged) approach of welcoming immigration, but they now face a lot of job vacancies in their transport section, which until then employed a lot of Eastern European workers. You would think that such jobs could be easily filled by unemployed Brits, but because there are already quite a few vacancies and the transport sector doesn't have a great reputation, there are simply not enough truck drivers and railway workers to keep up with demand. The same is true for Japan, which is facing severe demographic problems with a rapidly aging population, yet is very reluctant to allow young and enthusiastic people inside their nation to work there.
@@derekskelton4187 Oh boy, I sure love RUclips arguments about current year politics! They're always so constructive and reasoned!
More of this please!
this is a solid game with good writing and interesting game mechanics but i have to say the design of the ui and art style really add to the experience.
i keep playing this game and giving up,. i cant bear to go through it without saving and going back ahah. if you made this a series i'd watch it!
11:55 They let me sign cheques with a stamp Claire, A STAMP!!!
21:50 "I swear growth was looking better than that two minutes ago" What, just before you gave a major infrastructure contract to a foreign business? I wonder why that could have changed...
"If you could do better" Not you then Truss.
Hope you continue the game, it's really cool!
Great video! I stopped halfway through to buy and then do a whole playthrough of the game in one sitting
if you decide to play on, know that just about anything is achievable in suzerain, if youre willing to sacrifice other things. but flim flamming back and forth is normally not going to work. you need to stay the course if you want to get stuff done
I desperately want to see a series of this
Were getting a full series of this right? I want to see how well you can manage a country.
Pls continue this. This is a really smart game and I'd like to see your perspective on it
Glad Jon has finally gotten around to this one!
"Whatever I do, someone's going to yell at me."
That right there is politics in a nutshell
Wow, I remember playing this game, hope we get a series but I doubt it.
If anyone who is a fellow adorer of this game who has found anything that comes close to scratching the Suzerain itch , PLEASE let me know. I’ve already devoured the Rizia DLC and the main campaign countless times. I feel like I can never find something that gives me the in the weeds policy making power paired with the world building and storytelling this game pulls off. Any Recs would be outrageously appreciated to feeding my shameless addiction😂Glory to Bludia!
Bludia doesn't exists
@@BearBullDivideRizz Alrighty Wiktor thanks for your contribution!
What a fun balancing act.
What a coincidence, I bought this just last night! Perfect game for you, can't wait to see where it goes.
my first playthrough ended with me in jail after a coup.
Believe it or not that's not the worst ending lol
I somehow have this game and had no idea what it was. I had a great time. Great vid!
Wow! A game I would really love to play.
Do it. If you have any interest in history or politics this is the game for you.
I'm shocked. This seems exactly the kind of game Jon would be interested in. I swore he played this game before.
"I said reforms, but not in which direction" is the most politically astute observation I've heard in months from anywhere!
14:34 Jon, remember: train good, car bad.
This website is ancient, but I feel with how Jon can spin a narrative it could be a fun, possibly low effort video? NationStates lets you run a country and it keeps tracks of tons of metrics. The start is a touch lengthy like I think 20-30min as you choose your stuff and get a TON of introductory issue questions to start you off but after that its like 5min a day as you click through your daily missions. I think it would be awesome to see like a month of it shrunk down into a video. I could see Jon getting really obsessed over maximizing an obscure stat. Like his country must be the absolute best basket weavers ever!
I love this and would very much like to see more
Hegel Gang Represent
God this game is so cruel and deep and I love it so so so so SO much. If you are a political policy wonk I cannot recommend this game enough. Series when??? Although to be fair it is a lot of dry as dirt reading to do😂easily the most interestingly boring game I have ever played.
Please do more !!
23:59 "Whatever I do, someone's going to yell at me." Welcome to politics, Jon!
Ah the story adventure game dubbed Coup Simulator 2020. Good times. Especially if you like to roleplay.
The roleplay opportunities are great in this game.
I keep staring at that portrait and being weirded out by it. When I played this game, a couple months after release, the portrait was unchanging. You were Anton Rayne, a historical person in this setting. Your incredible mustache was plot-relevant because people liked it and you could do diplomacy by leaning on your electable face.
I know right. I started before they expanded the map
We need a whole series :)
Jon please make a full playthrough of this
We need a whole series.
Pls livestream this at some point!
i would love to see more of this
This game is one of the most stressful ive ever played
I would love to see more of this! ❤
This game is soooo underrated! Honestly one of the best world building I have ever experienced. 10/10 reccomend and the game is so cheap.
Please turn this into a series.
Al right jon, you challenged me to do better.
Let it be known that 3 years in my term I almost doubled the GDP from 340 million to 560 million something whilst raking only 1 more million in state debt.
I reduced unemployment from 16% down to 5%. Almost everyone in my nation has seen an increase in their standard of living.
I reformed the education and drastically improved the quality of it in rural areas. Stopped a polio outbreak death in it tracks.
My game ended however with me beaten in a cell dying of poor health due to the awful conditions of my imprisonment. So it's actually just a matter of where you make the cut I suppose.
Ah, this game. I enjoyed it quite thoroughly.
Generally, it's a good game to practice commitment. The game will hold it against you if you're flakey with your resolutions. So, if you say something, do it.
This is one of those games that I really loved when first playing it, but I don't think I'm ever going to replay because of how nerve-wracking it got.
The more you replay it the more you learn about all the characters. Plans within plans...
Oh no. He's going to get screwed.
The Egg comes for all
MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also, there's like 40 endings Jon
I know in one of them you can basically blow up the world.
@@brandonlyon730 all I know is that out of the 40 endings only like 3 are good
It is amazing how simple but elegant John described the problems with a planned economy
A true Macro economic game where sometimes there are no good decisions.
Your house is on fire, and it's getting worse by the second.
Do you
a. Pour gasoline on it.
or b. Pour lighter fluid on it.
15:55 Calling a city with 600 thousand inhabitants "tiny town" is funny. It would literally be the second largest city where I am from. 😀
Need a full playthrough. I failed wonderfully first run. I think jon could top it.

Does Jon know about the DLC?
It was a lot more entertaining than Starfield
Better writing as well.
29:45 Um... I'd immediately turn down anything that involves a legislature in a country with nascent hard-right and hard-left factions passing an "Enabling Act".
