It's important to remember that a lot of the costs would not go away if the monarchy was abolished. A new Head of State would be needed if the UK still wanted to maintain the same level of public events and foreign diplomacy, and that would cost at least the same amount probably more. Especially if it was an elected President as you then need to pay for regular elections. It's also worth emphasising that the Sovereign Grant is not from the tax payer but is a proportion of the income of the Crown Estate. The Sovereign Grant can only be used for official duties. The only other funding the Royal Family gets is Security.
