If you haven't done so, please do a transfer of Cantelli's Brahms 3rd. It's in stereo on Seraphim, it features one of Brain's last recordings.....oh that solo in the slow movement!
Besides the EMI and Warner CDs, I have the Seraphim and a World Records reprint LPs. It looks like the original HMV pressings were 10" mono discs. Seraphims generally had poor surfaces. The World Records has the symphony crammed on one side with Schumann's 4th on the other so, without checking, I'm guessing it will be totally lacking in bass and pitched fast. I will give the various sources a check.
Great story about this recording session. Engineers heard Brain warming up and asked him to play something for the levels. He ripped off Wagner’s Siefgried’s Call and they kept it. It’s been issued on record and CD. It’s legendary.
@@GlensAudioRestoration I have that same CD. I think the Brain story is in the notes, but I'd heard it through the grapevine while in college. Your LP transfer sounds amazing.
The Philharmonia of this period as well as the "New Philharmonia" is certainly one of my favorite orchestras. I should make a playlist. I should look at trying to find some original Toscanini Philharmonia discs.
Lots of fantastic performances by the Philharmonia Orchestra under a number of great conductors!
A zesty interpretation by Cantelli, excellently performed. Thanks, Glen.
Nice!
With the great Dennis Brain on first horn!

@@GlensAudioRestoration Good luck. Sounds like you have your work cut out for you on that one.

I have it on the Testament CD of this performance. This was transferred from the original HMV LP.

Great story, indeed.
Philharmonia must have been the best Orchestra at the time. It also appears that Cantelli not only joined The maestro but exceeded him
