When I was a child, and I am 76 now, lightning bugs were everywhere. We lived on a farm, and sometimes the fields were magical with them. There had to be thousands of them. The display at night was spectacular. I would catch them at night and put them in a jar with a piece of screen on top and watch them and release them in the morning. Those were the good old days. I always heard if they fly low to the ground that it was going to rain. Thank you Donnie for this video. You are the best.

Oh my. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY (I am 79 now) and my childhood with lightning bugs was the same. To a 10yo kid, they were magical. It is so sad that I haven't seen one in many years (I have moved around the US a lot and now live in New England).
      Donnie, I love your videos.

Oh yes! I’d forgotten it too Donnie! Don’t you worry about that……we all forget things on occasion. I sure can remember the lightning bugs!! They were so pretty at night…..it was like they were putting on their fantastic show for all to see and enjoy. I haven’t seen one since I was a little girl. So sad that everything is going away and our younger generations won’t have a chance to experience them. Thanks for sharing! Blessings always to you and your lovely wife! ❤️🙏😊

Morning Mr.Donnie. Oh how I remember catching lightening bugs and putting them in a jar. Granny would give us a lid for the jar being sure to poke holes in it so they could breathe. Now she made sure that it was a mayonnaise lid or something like that, cause everything else was used for canning. We could keep them inside just for the night but had to let them go the next morning because Granny said they had families too. 😉Until next time God Bless

"They're not the number they use to be." That's the sad truth around my area. Saw one light up in my garden last week. First one in years. Then a hail storm blew threw and tore it up a couple days ago. It'll come back. Nature has a tendency to do that if we let it.

Donnie you are so right. When I was a kid we would go outside just at the beginning of night fall and catch lightning bugs and put them in a jar. I remember once I was at my Nanny house and I was using a knife to poke holes in the jar lid and I missed and stabbed my hand and I still have a scar to remind me of those fun times. You are so right you don't see lightning bugs like we use to. That was always a good reminder when I was young that summer time was here. Thanks for the great memory of being young and running around barefoot at night chasing lightning bugs.

We thought it was just the greatest fun having lots of moving nightlights right there with us. Excepting the fact when we woke up there was an equal amount of "ugly" bugs crawling around in our tent! Lol. Somehow we didn't think ahead to how they would look in the morning light. Great memories 40+ years later. Thanks for sharing!

Lightning bugs!! I noticed their numbers diminished just in my lifetime. Wondered why that might be. I was such a "gurly-gurl" that lightning bugs were about the only bug i wasn't scared of and would hold in my hand. My fears of creepy crawlers got picked up by my daughters (my poor example). But one of my fondest memories was teaching my daughters how to catch lightning bugs. If mom would touch a bug, then nothing to be afraid of. I don't think they have lightning bugs west of the Rockys. Thanks for bringing back those memories Mr. Donnie!! ❤❤

Here in Ohio we call them both names. Like everything else that's beautiful and harmless, our lightning bug populations have plummeted too. There are bad people that have been spraying poison on all of us for years and years now. If a stop would be put to it----then all of nature will bounce back in a few years time. I'm holding the fort, waiting to see those days, I hope. If I can last that long. God Bless you, Donnie, for this sweet little video.

For years I have said that anyone looking for proof that God exists need look no further than the lightning bug. Kids are fascinated by and curious about insects. And here is an insect that flies low enough and slow enough that young kids can catch them with their bare hands. They don't bite, they don't sting, they don't pinch. They're harmless. And best of all, they light up! Who but God would have created such a captivating and kid-friendly bug?

I feel like crying every time I mow the grass and the lightening bugs start flying around. 😢 I hate accidentally having to disturb and possibly kill them. I live in the woods where it's one of the only place for miles of agricultural fields where they can congregate. But I can't let my lawn turn into a pasture. 😭

Yup. Frequent mowing certainly reduces their numbers, but pesticides are far more devastating. There’s a field across from my house which has almost no lightning bugs, while I have lots more. And I do mow, although I don’t quite keep up. Yet the field lies mostly undisturbed between planting and harvest. 🙁

Glad you included the lightning bugs, Mr Donnie. Yes, collecting a jar of them as a kid to use as a miniature lantern was so much fun. If I remember correctly, it was the use of DDT and other pesticides that reduced their population so greatly.

They have seriously declined in numbers here in France, here we call them Glow Worms,( Lampyris nactiluca), it is a beetle, the early stages feed on Snails, so they are a huge asset, I see very few now even in deepest rural France. Chris B.
