unbelievable!!! i have replace headlites on just about every GM car and truck i have owned and never saw a task like this. thank you for the tutoring..
I know. I have always been a GM / Chevy person, but this kind of stuff is really aggravating. The Malibu now has a bunch of stuff designed to deter you from fixing it yourself. Kind of sad.I guess its all about profit these days.
+lastmoto777 thank you for the video..Using your guide we did the job in 2hr and 45 mins counting parts runs for all of the bulbs. i would like to comment privately to you on one element of your utube. i also would like to mail to you the GM factory R&R instructions for this job. You will find them quite interesting. Do you have an email that you would share with me..also i would need an address to mail the GM stuff. If you have access to GM website as i do i can email the R&R document numbers.
Just pull the push clips from the wheel well and the take the screws off the bottom of the bumper. Then stick your hand in the bumper and pull the light out. Saves a lot of time
A chain shop did that to save time. My car is going elsewhere to get the other light replaced and tighten the assembly on the light they did change because it moves.
Had no idea I had to do all this just to change the headlight. I tried to figure it out and didn't see any easy way to do the job so RUclips here I come. watched a couple videos and then found yours. most helpful one I watched. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the video. I only took one side off to get to the bulb I needed to replace. Had my wife hold the bumper wrap out while I removed and replaced the bolts for the headlamp housing.
This video was straight forward and clear, we need more repair videos like this, thank you very much. Oh Chevy! I'm going to start driving foreign SOON.
I know how you feel. Seems like the Feds own Chevrolet for a couple of years and........Disaster..... No longer owner friendly or even mechanic friendly...Sad.
Just finished changing the low beams on my 2009. What a giant pain. I actually had to do the job twice because the first time I didn't notice that the passenger side housing wasn't all the way snapped in even though it all seemed to get put back together with no issues. But when the job was done (or so I thought), I tested the lights against the garage door and the passenger side light was 3-4 inches lower on the wall than the other side. So, off came the front end again. I was a mighty happy camper at that point. This time when I remounted the light fixture I pulled up on the housing really hard until it grudgingly snapped into place all the way. I put the front end back on with four new snaps on the underside, six new snaps in the wheel wells and four new snaps for that big plastic piece on top. Phew! Just waiting for a turn signal to go out or something.
Xlt thank you! I decided I would do it myself, even if I could afford the luxury of the dealer or body shop to do it, because I know there would only be half the fasteners when I got the car back. ...if I'm honest with myself it took me probably 4 hrs total including prep time and clean up, I also went to the trouble of washing everything like you suggested, even flushed out a dead bird. My particular issue of Malibu (2012) had a 10mm screw at the top of the wheel well liner at the outboard edge as well as the 4 push pin things. Other than that, it was snap crackle pop and there I was standing there with the entire front end shell in my hand. I upgraded the low beam to the higher power as you suggested, cost me $10 more per bulb.
- Thank you so much! I've been putting this off for the last 2 months and FINALLY did this today! Appreciated your video! Took me 4 hours, but I'm relieved from saving $150.
Hi. Thanks for the great video. Just wanted to say there is a access hole for the bolt by the tires. You don't have to pull the shield inside the area where the tire is to get at it.
I just finished leaving my blood on the Malibu changing a low beam lamp. Couldn't have done the job without your video, especially the knowledge of knowing about all the mounting tabs. It may not be necessary to remove the topmost pushpin in the wheel well, just the lower three. Someone please confirm that. Having some spare fasteners helps. Don't trust local mechanics to know how to do this without damaging your car.
Probably some geek with a computer that has never fixed a car in his life !!! Lol . He certainly wasn't worried about ease of access for the poor soul who has does the maintenance on these cars. Anyway, glad the video was helpful. Good luck with it.
Great video. As for me, I'm not that confident on taking all of this apart, I'm sure I would make things worse and never be able to put all of that back together successfully. if I were to do this I would go ahead and replace the entire lamp with a new and improved. All I want to do right now is just clean the inside of the cover plate. Thumbs up on the detail instructions. :=D
Thanks for the video, I was afraid to tackle the problem. worried that I would make a bigger mess of it. The only problem that we ran into, was that the headlight on the passenger side was never truly lined up with the fender and front clip to begin with. No damage, just sit the way it's so posed to. I ended up having to push on the headlight while my wife tightened the 2 bolts. And again when we started putting the front clip back on. I pushed on the headlight while she worked the clip into place. Definitely something that I will pay attention to the next time that we purchase a vehicle.
I hate to say it but all the manufacturers are starting to make it hard for the average consumer to do anything to the car at all..... Glad you got it done though !
Great video! Best I have seen for this God awful operation, which I have performed once, and am getting ready to do on the same car, which my son now owns.
Look at the bright side. 2 hours is not that bad for this job ! , and now you HAVE SAVED YOURSELF ALOT OF MONEY. Better in your pocket than theirs right. Glad the video was helpful.
Thanks for the informative video. The only instruction that was left out was to sell the Chevy car after the repair and purchase a dodge. It will make vehicle maintenance a little more enjoyable.
hey thanks for the great video. this would have been the third time for me to take it to the dealer for the bulb. not gona pay another $120 for that again. thanks!
Good video. Other videos I watched showed that you do not have to remove the 7mm screws on the bottom. I tried it that way, and I was able to replace the bulbs. But I could not get the nose back on until I removed the 7mm screws.
So sorry. That is ridiculous for headlight replacement. If you can do these kind of jobs yourself its worth the effort. Think of it like paying yourself $300 for 2 or 3 hours work instead of someone else. Anyway good luck with it when you do it.
I will never pay for this service again!!!! I even saw a video of a 7 year old changing the lights....I felt really bad about my choices in life, lmbo!!!
i watched 8 vids and i think yours explained popping the headlight out and taking the bumper trim off the best, for all of us that need to spend half a day to save 200-300 bucks at the shop to replace a bulb on a poorly designed car that represents some AUTO industry Brass and there golden parachute....... but we who dont get golden parachutes for 300 dollar bulb jobs get to do this.........salt.
Hello, I am here to say that I just had to do this and it was really easy and it was my first time doing so. Lastmoto777 stated in his video that it will take any where from two to three hours, will that was not true he had an electric drill I was just using a hand ratchet and it took me about 30-50 mins if that. The only lengthy time was taking out all of the screws from the top and the bottom of the bumper as well as the the few push pins that was it. Other then that nice video Lastmoto777...
Remember the good old days when you could open the hood, reach behind the headlight housing, remove and unplug the bulb and replace it with a new one? Five minutes, tops. I had a 2007 Tahoe and a 2011 Avalanche…had to remove the bumpers to replace a bulb on them too. GM engineers should be kicked right in the nuts for designing these this way.
I do remember that! Even before that there were glass bulbs ( that did not leak or yellow) and they also could be replaced in 5 minutes or so. Unplug/trim ring/new bulb/DONE !! I believe that they are designed to keep the average person from changing bulbs themselves, and paying the dealer a ton of money to do it for you. Its just not right. Not only that. You did not need tools to do it.. Now you need tools and at least a little mechanical ability! Sad Sad Sad...
So when you take your headlight out and it has moisture in it like this one, make sure you seal it before replacing the bulb or you will be replacing it again soon! 5:58
It's really not that hard to do. The hard part is knowing what hardware & push clips to remove, and the procedure to go through to get the job done. Thanks to lastmoto777 for providing that information.
I have done this four times now and about to do it a fifth. I gave my Malibu to my stepson and I cringed when he came to me and told me that he has a headlight out. This is a classic case of overengineering so the average person has to take it in and spend big $$$ to get a simple headlight replaced. I inherited a 2013 Kia Sportage. You unscrew a cap, twist out the old headlamp, twist in the new, then replace cap. 5 minutes and you're done with both headlights.
Thanks for sharing the misery my Niece will be putting me through when her headlight burns out, LOL! Why manufacturers do this just blows my mind. I guess an easier way to do this would be to trade the car in on another...
Yeah...I am not sure if the manufacturers do this so you will have to come to the shop for every little thing, or if the computer designs these things with no regard for the person maintaining them. It certainly is not designed for ease of maintenance! Look at the upside you will end up being the hero & favorite uncle to your niece ! LOL ( after hours of working on it that is..haha )
I just replaced the stock H11 halogen bulbs with LED bulbs that are brighter than the sun and will last over 25,000 hours so hopefully I'll never have to replace another bulb ever.
That is a roofing tool.....It is a pry bar to remove old shingles and nails.... It is also unbeieivably useful on cars... That one never leaves my toolbox. lol.
Believe it or not it is a pry bar for removing old shingles. I use it all the time and keep it in my tool box. Home depot, or lowes. Good luck with it .
Bill Crawford Think about it. Dropping the engine is a small price to pay for a clean windshield! Thank you GM. Seriously though. It makes you mad cause you know they did that on purpose.
Yeah it stinks. I am pretty sure they did that on purpose though. To try to have you bring it to the dealer and pay them alot of money to replace a headlight bulb.... Its sad! Chevy was always driver and owner/ do it yourselfer friendly in the past! I'll miss the old school Chevrolet.
I am on my second Malibu and as much as I hate to say it, I will not buy another one. I took my Malibu to the dealership after watching videos telling how to replace the headlights and I decided it was more work than I was willing to get into. I also had them check the brake light in the rear window because it was going dim sometimes. They messed it up so badly I still get angry if I think about it too much. The headlights are mounted so poorly that they don't fit tight and flush in the opening and they are tilted down so much that I have to use the brights to see like you would with the low beams. I know they aren't shining in people's faces because absolutely no one ever flashes their lights at me to turn them off. Also they left out a couple of clips on the inside of the fender so that every time I go over bumpy road it rattles. I was going to replace the clips myself but the holes aren't even lined up so I can. I took it back and the same guy that fixed it told me "that is how they are going to fit in there". I know that's an outright lie. On the initial visit he had told me it would be no longer than two hours and I didn't have a ride to and from so I waited in the nice comfortable waiting lobby and that two hours turned into 5 and a half, I kid you not. For the brakelight he quoted an outrageous price so I said I'll have to take care of it later. I didn't think I needed to check the trunk to see that he put it all back together so I drove off only mad about the headlights. Sure enough a few days later I opened the trunk for something and the headliner was just hanging there, all the clips were on the floor of the trunk and the fuse box was wide open. I was beyond mad at that point. I put it all back together and should have taken photos but that was an afterthought. This dealership is rated as the best one around here and has won awards. I also learned around that same time that they have now made the newer models starting year '21 if I recall correctly that require the engine to be dropped to replace the headlights. Sadly, I'm done with the Malibu because I really like that car. Lessons learned. Do some research on common problems with whatever vehicle you are looking at and how they are fixed so you don't get blindsided with something like "oh, we have to drop the engine to replace your headlights" and always check their work before driving off. I should have gone back and demanded they fix it and fix it right but I've lost all trust in them and the quality of their work. I will never go back there for anything.
I hate to say this , but I dont remember.I Think the parking light was a 4157 amber bulb.3157 on the turn which is also amber.I believe you can use either for both applications.Good luck with it.
I've changed my driver side bulb twice in the past 12 months. Now on my 3rd try the light still does not come on with a fresh bulb. Please help! Thank you.
Maybe on your vehicle, but there is absolutely no way to get to the bulbs on the passenger side since they are right backed right up to solid metal. In order to move the light fixture away far enough to reach the bulbs, you have to reach the two bolts that hold the fixture in place. They are unreachable with the front end on the car. However, if you have tiny hands, you might be able to reach some of the the driver's side bulbs by removing the fill pipe to the windshield washer container and removing the covers to the fuse box and battery. I couldn't even begin to get my hand in there, so I replace the low beam on that side - even though it wasn't burned out - while the front end was off.
Lynn I dont have a video for that but you will want to fill your overflow reservoir to the full mark with a 50/50 DEX-COOL coolant/ anti-freeze. That will be the orange/pink stuff. The reservoir is behind the engine next to the power steering reservoir. Then you will have to keep checking it and add as needed. You probably have a slow leak somewhere that you will have to deal with eventually. If you really overheated the Malibu you may not have much coolant left in your motor or radiator. This can be a little tricky if you have never dealt with this before. I would recomend maybe getting a local person, friend who is good with cars to help. Don't ever open the caps or lids when your engine is hot or overheating! I know this isnt much help, but I really dont want you to get burned while trying to fix it. Hope this helps.
I will never buy from Chevrolet again. They suck for doing this to their customers . Each employee be ashamed for working for such a suck company. And this is what America has to show ? Really ? What happened to being proud and good workmanship?
Yeah . I am a little older so I can remember back when a Chevy was easy to work on. Easy to make fast, and just modify in general. Ahh the good ol days are definitely gone. Kind of a shame really.
yeah. They did that on purpose. They want you to bring it to the dealership to change a headlight bulb! Not your daddies Chevrolet. Its kind of a shame.
If you buy a European car you should feel even more ashamed; "If you fool me once shame on you, if you fool me twice shame on me" Now go buy a VW or an Audi. or even a Porsche.
unbelievable!!! i have replace headlites on just about every GM car and truck i have owned and never saw a task like this.

i’m so thankful for you, i wasn’t taught anything like this
You are welcome. I am glad the video was helpful to you.
Great video, helping a friend replace the bulb. After watching it I'm tempted to get me a Malibu (just kidding) 😂
Thanks for the video. I know now to plan for a little bit longer project and yes I think it's worth replacing all the bulbs for that much effort.
Who the hell designed this freakin car !!!
Thanks for the video , I have to do my daughters head lights this weekend
Probably some geek with a computer that has never fixed a car in his life !!! Lol . He certainly wasn't worried about ease of access for the poor soul who has does the maintenance on these cars. Anyway, glad the video was helpful. Good luck with it.
Thank you so much for the video . Read that the dealership charges and average of $190 to replace.
Great video. Excellent. Bout to do a friend's car. Perfect instructions. Should be relatively quick.
ah, thank you! going to get one today! attempting this feat in the morning. thanks for the great video!
HAHA me too. Pain in the ass
Thanks for the video, I was afraid to tackle the problem. worried that I would make a bigger mess of it.
The only problem that we ran into, was that the headlight on the passenger side was never truly lined up with the fender and front clip to begin with. No damage, just sit the way it's so posed to. Thank you for your very excellent tutorial. Keep up the great work. GM is getting just as bad as Ford.
Good point on the other lights that still work. I have one bulb out, might as well change them all while I'm in there. Thanks for the video.
Great video! Best I have seen for this God awful operation, which I have performed once, and am getting ready to do on the same car, which my son now owns.
thanks alot for this video..had to do it today..took me 2hrs..was an experience for me

hey thanks for the great video. this would have been the third time for me to take it to the dealer for the bulb. not gona pay another $120 for that again. thanks!

what an excellent video. thank you so much. you should be paid by GM for this
Thanks. I appreciate the kind words. Glad it was helpful.
Good video. Other videos I watched showed that you do not have to remove the 7mm screws on the bottom. I tried it that way, and I was able to replace the bulbs. But I could not get the nose back on until I removed the 7mm screws.
looks like a Saturday all morning project thanks for the video now I got to do it on my daughters car
Glad the video was helpful and good luck with it.
I'm the poor soul who had to take it to the Chevy dealership and pay 300+. never again I will do this myself. this video was perfect for me
So sorry. That is ridiculous for headlight replacement. If you can do these kind of jobs yourself its worth the effort. Think of it like paying yourself $300 for 2 or 3 hours work instead of someone else. Anyway good luck with it when you do it.

also all the dirt that collected in the panel they designed to make people pay big money sure makes alot of rust well desinged yet again.
Thank You for the Excellent Tutorial.

typical chevy, that one like mine has water in the passenger side light assembly.. one drop hits a hot bulb and pop! it's over.. Thanks shivy.
Thank you for making this video.
So when you take your headlight out and it has moisture in it like this one, make sure you seal it before replacing the bulb or you will be replacing it again soon!

Thanks for the video. Ughhhh I thought this we would be a quick and fix
I'm so glad I decided to buy an Impala instead of one of these.... They are so much easier to do
very good video doing my car on Saturday , best video I watched so far thanks for taking the time to do this
It's really not that hard to do. The hard part is knowing what hardware & push clips to remove, and the procedure to go through to get the job done. Thanks to lastmoto777 for providing that information.

Great Video!!
Great video, thanks
successfully completed this weekend!
I just replaced the stock H11 halogen bulbs with LED bulbs that are brighter than the sun and will last over 25,000 hours so hopefully I'll never have to replace another bulb ever.
Such a pain in the ass to .just to change a bulb. Thanks for the video
What would you recommend if the bottom bolts are stopped to the core?
thanks for the video.
What is that tool you pry the plastic pegs with? I need one of those! Great video
That is a roofing tool.....It is a pry bar to remove old shingles and nails.... It is also unbeieivably useful on cars... That one never leaves my toolbox. lol.
Screw Chevy for doing this.
It's not just Chevy. They ALL do it!
Except Honda Toyota Subaru :)
excellent job
Glad the video was helpful.
Thanks for the video. :-) Where did you get that tool to pull the clips out and what is it called?
Believe it or not it is a pry bar for removing old shingles. I use it all the time and keep it in my tool box. Home depot, or lowes. Good luck with it .
Yeah, I hear their 2020 model requires you to drop the engine to add washer fluid. GM needs to replace some engineers.
Bill Crawford Think about it. Dropping the engine is a small price to pay for a clean windshield! Thank you GM. Seriously though. It makes you mad cause you know they did that on purpose.
Dam I'm just gonna drive with out a bumper
One word for this design.. Kaching...
Nice video
I will never purchase another vehicle that require you to take off the whole bumper, to replace a headlight bulb....poor design!

Chevy should have used LED headlights so they would last the life of the vehicle.
A
H11 whats the other bulb before i take it apart?
I hate to say this , but I dont remember.I Think the parking light was a 4157 amber bulb.3157 on the turn which is also amber.I believe you can use either for both applications.Good luck with it.
I've changed my driver side bulb twice in the past 12 months. Now on my 3rd try the light still does not come on with a fresh bulb. Please help! Thank you.
I would test the plug to see if its getting any juice. If it is it has to be a ground.
allgood thanks a million
Glad the video helped.
I'll rather pay the $300😂😂, but u never know I could change my mind
Great video, I have to do this asap. Thanks a lot Chevy, your design sucks!
Meanwhile, found designer walking in dark alley........
Failed engineering! No wonder why people prefer Toyota and Honda over American cars!
Punishment for buying a malibu
Thank you 😂
OMG, just to change your lights, you have to tear up the front end. Fck
Yeah.....I am getting very dissapointed with Chevrolet.
Excessive. I can do it removing 3 plastic clips and 2 scews in under 8 min per bulb and no bumper removal lol
I couldn't even begin to get my hand in there, so I replace the low beam on that side - even though it wasn't burned out - while the front end was off.
spry WD-40 and they be easier
For a fracking bulb!!!
Yup.
+lastmoto777 HEEELP...do you have a tutorial on how to check the radiator fluid?? My car over heated yesterday so I'm hoping you can help me!!!! 😕
Wow. Talk about a stupid design. What was Chevy thinking with this stupid idea???? All that to change a bulb.
The unmittagated gall of Chevy to do that to vehicle owner ,Cheap, I mean really they had no other options?Id trade that piece of crap
TERRIBLE DESIGN BY CHEVROLET!!
yeah. They did that on purpose. They want you to bring it to the dealership to change a headlight bulb! Not your daddies Chevrolet. Its kind of a shame.
This Is Totally Stupid...Im Going Back To Beaters I Can Work On Without The Aggrivation And Stress..
I am ashamed of what American cars have become. There is no way I will ever buy one of these pieces of shit.
If you buy a European car you should feel even more ashamed; "If you fool me once shame on you, if you fool me twice shame on me" Now go buy a VW or an Audi. or even a Porsche.
I sorta agree. I think I would rather buy an American car from the 50's or 60's from one of those fancy autions on TV.
First time i buy american car and this shit. Never again
Yeah. Kind of ridiculous isn't it. Unfortunately more and more autos are being made without any thought about ease of maintainance,
Just for a headlamp?! Screw Malibu....
