I came across this video a few weeks ago while listening to an assortment of Red Molly songs... I have not been able to stop listening to Jimmy LaFave since. His voice can reach right into your heart and tear out your soul. I can’t believe I discovered him a year after his death. RIP Jimmy and thank you.
I first saw Jimmy in a hole in the wall club on Ocean St. in Santa Cruz in the 90's, was given a free ticket and told "check this dude out". I left with new appreciation for Okies and one of every cd he was selling. A rare talent, he will be missed.
Transcendent! Each time I hear this it seems more vivid, more lovely. The spontaneous performance by these newly introduced musicians is just incredibly beautiful and electric. Don't think this incredibly lovely song has ever been done better.
Yeah, that voice! I was at a Guthrie tribute show in Santa Monica years ago. Eliza Gilkyson was performing outside. A looked to my left, and Mr. LaFave was standing next to me. Cool!
Jimmy was a beautiful and soulful person and a captivating musician. Saw him many times with my lady Poe, the love of my life. He was her monogamy exemption... She was murdered by cancer less than a year after he was. If there is an afterlife I hope they are together and having big fun! Miss them both, but her more.
This is why music lives! This song has been done thousands of times - but - could this be the best ever?! I hesitate to say that as it brings in all kinds of hints of music as competition -which it isn't. Still, heartfelt, REAL, that's what's happen' here! Great job!
Amazing music. Thank God for these talented folks that haven't sold their souls to the pop country machine. Please keep puttin out this wonderful music.
I agree. Jimmy may have found the holy grail here. This is one of the few Dylan songs that Dylan himself has never truly nailed, and God knows he's tried. Furthermore, down through the years, countless other artists have tried their hand at it and still no definitive version emerged. If there is one version that might rival Jimmy's, it's Chrissie Hynde's delivery at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden in 1992. I wonder is there any other Dylan song out there that is crying out for a definitive reading. One that comes to mind for me is 'Forever Young'?
The Band does the definitive version of I Shall be Released and the definitive of Forever Young is the version from The Last Waltz film. the latter has no equal. It is pure ecstasy.
I am so glad I discovered Music Fog. The quality of the sound and video are amazing. The bus videos really provide an intimate glimpse of some really great performers in a relaxed setting. They make you feel like you were actually there. My compliments to all of you.
Has there ever been a better more soulful voice than Jimmy's. Their range is different but Jimmy stacks up to Gregg Allman. Both of whom are sadly missed , now Jimmy singing some Allman Brothers songs would've been a gift to music and I could hear Gregg doing this song.
You asked if there has ever been a more soulful voice than Jimmy's and in my opinion I would say no. To me, he had a unique magic that penetrated people's soul and sometimes would even change their lives. I know he changed mine for the better. Goodness, I miss him.
When I first moved to Austin back in the early 90's . Jimmy Lafaves and Bob Schneider were my two favorite singers. RIP Jimmy your music touch my soul just like Chicago soul music did. my favorite song (the way it must remain)
They say every man needs protection They say that every man must fall Yet I swear I see my reflection Somewhere so high above this wall .. How beatiful..
Let's start with a Jimmy story as it seems that we all like to share our experience. When Slaid Cleaves recorded his Sorrow and Smoke live album at the Horseshoe Lounge I was in attendance. I'm not sure at what point it was in the set but Jimmy came in. My buddy and I were both fans. When he pointed him out I thought "Oh cool. I wonder what it's like to chat with him". At some point later in the show I stepped out for a smoke and so did he. Let me say that our conversation was by no means deep, profound, or earth-shattering. It was just pleasant chit chat. It amazed me then, and it's still amazes me now, how friendly he was. He seemed genuinely friendly. Genuinely like a nice person. From what I've read I guess he was. I'm happy that I had the chance to meet him. I admire him even more today than I did then. With the customary story out of the way I'm curious if anyone knows if this was ever released on any CDs or anything. The thought maybe music fog would have a Spotify account where they could post some of this older music, but I can't seem to find one. I'd love to put this into my liked songs rotation because I love this song. More importantly I love this version of this song. I'm afraid that if I can't download it or obtain it in some way that one day it may get erased and I won't have it to lift my spirits. I'd appreciate it if someone would let me know. Have a good one.
Thanks for your story, Zachry. In 2010 Music Road Records/Jimmy brought Music Fog to WoodyFest to film and so we have all the footage/recordings that we hope to work with someday in the near future. We agree this is such a beautiful recording and hope to make it officially available soon.
When you consider that this is done by three groups who didn't always perform together and doesn't appear to be anything but a live performance. It might be done better but if it is I want to be there when it is. Bob Dylan wrote it but I don't think he did it this well. Too bad Stonehoney broke up and we lost Jimmy LaFave last year, thanks to Music Fog we have what could be their signature song.
The Best version ever released... what a talent.. what s loss for all if us..
Agree 💯❤️
As a super fan of just about everyone else who did this, I couldn't agree more
Nobody can even come close to Jimmy's unique talent. His beautiful voice stirs me every single time. Miss him so very much.

I totally agree! Watching the video makes me wonder what his thoughts were singing this song knowing he was dying! 💔😢
