    One possible wrinkle - from memory as you mentioned in the FLIR teardown - there are legal/export problems around high framerate IR cameras. There is an explicit exemption for car-thermal vision systems as long as they have a positive disable when they are removed from the car, so they can't be used.
    If I'm remembering this right - enabling could be quite awkward.

    From personal experience on a previous project, Audi system components expect to see a periodic SYSTEM_RUN message on the CANbus to enable a module. In my case it was adapting a Audi electronic steering assist module for use for a racing boat. The assist module expected to see SYSTEM_RUN packet every 100ms or so to keep it active. It was not sufficient to simply send it the ASSIST_FORCE command to keep it running. The solution was to send SYSTEM_RUN messages every 90ms and send ASSIST_FORCE commands only when the pilot changed the UI input (a POT) The pilot could also turn the module off. The PIC controller program simply stopped sending the SYSTEM_RUN messages. This caused the assist module to go into idle_stand_by within 350ms.

    Hi Mike,
    thank you for all the amazing videos you produce.
    Two years ago you did that video... have you got any new informations about the thermal imaging camera? I'm very interested in these things, but as a studend I can't afford to spend 500€ on somethink I don't even know if it will work. Have you played with the camera again?

    Interesting, this is the same camera module Noptic uses for their unity spot light mounted thermal camera which is marketed to police agencies. It's called the "PathFindIR" by Flir

  • @GadgetAddict
    @GadgetAddict 10 лет назад +1

    I've seen these and similar going pretty cheap on ebay (300-500 GBP). But most of them seem to require going into the specific control box of the manufacturer. Or you can buy a 'converter' box to get svideo/vga/whatever out. But those converters cost 1000+ GBP. Would be a good source of cheap automotive FLIR night vision cams if it wasn't for the dang custom manufacturer computer boxes that they have to connect to.

      Bit late but you can get the Cadillac Deville thermal cameras which are a 320*240 BST sensor at 60FPS, feed em 12v and they spit out a NTSC signal. Average cost is around 200ish?

    That circular interface you called "possibly LVDS" looks identical to a connector on a module of my own car used for USB. I wouldn't be too surprised if it's somewhat of an industry standard, and that's what they're using here. Probably worth probing to find out!

    • @AlexWhittemore
      @AlexWhittemore 10 лет назад +3

      Wouldn't it be fun if this thing just enumerates as a USB webcam?

    is it possible to make it work out of car? how to stream out camera vision video on any display?

    • @111chicane
      @111chicane 5 лет назад +1

      It wouldn't be very easy. You need to connect to Audi CAN line to enable it. It's looking for Ignition ON to start operating.

    • @bcampbell611
      @bcampbell611 Год назад

      Couldn’t you plug it to permanent power supply for it to work?

  • @111chicane
    @111chicane 5 лет назад +2

    This camera, as well as all other modules in a modern car need to be told through the CAN-line the car is on Ignition to start working properly. If you just power them up they usually go into test cycle and transmit their S/N, sometimes VIN number and other specific codes through CAN, and if they don't see a respond from the Body Control Module of the car they go into Sleep Mode. Then they wait for the BCM, CAN Interface Module or Instrument Cluster to send them through CAN an Ignition ON message to wake up. There is also a Wake-Up signal which only takes them to Stand-By mode but most modules are not enabling all their features at this stage to preserve energy (the car battery). Bottom line: it's almost impossible to make those modules work with their full functionality out of the car they came from. Optional modules like this camera will only work properly in a car they are intended for and enabled in the option's menu of the other modules the given one is designed to communicate with.

    I might have overheated a few Google boxes searching for datasheet of this damn thing.
    Any news on the sensor signals ?
    Since this thing has finite ( if any) computing resources on chip and there doesn't seem to be lock against opening the box, does that mean that reverese-engineering of the signalling involved would be easy if one could take a look of chip signals when mounted on the vehicle ?

    What kind of filters would be used to filter out automotive noise for electronics? Those two you are pointing at look like chokes to me.

    • @electronalchemy7513
      @electronalchemy7513 11 лет назад +1

      Effectively twin chokes on the same former, wound with 1 pair back to front. This means that any common mode noise or spikes (that is to say noise appearing on both + and - lines) will tend to cancel each other out.

    I notice all the BGA chips have a sort of black epoxy on them. Is this to protect against vibration?

    • @aserta

      I suppose so yes, but i think it's for moisture.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 11 лет назад

      ***** Yeah, makes more sense since this is an unit that sits in the front of the car.

    • @Aussie50
      @Aussie50 11 лет назад +2

      aserta absolutely, its probably the most hostile environment for such a thing, extreme variance in temp and vibration would desolder those BGA's quite effectively :D

    • @aserta
      @aserta 11 лет назад

      Aussie50 I mentioned moisture protection because of diving tech. It has either identical or similar under-fill. But, yes in a car, first concerns, temp and vibration.
