ATLANTIC OCEAN RESCUE - Our Recap // Sailing Coco #82

  • Our sail across the Atlantic Ocean was a little scarier than expected. We were on the home straight, everything was going smooth and then it happened..... We spotted a single handed French sailor LOST AT SEA. Having being stranded at sea for 3 weeks and dismasted for 3 days with no engine, we spotted his dismasted yacht being thrown around by the fierce swell of the Atlantic.
    After countless times of trying to summon the help of the coastguard from various Caribbean islands, each time we got a refusal of help. We knew it was up to us to get the lost sailor to safety. That was the only thought in all of our minds as we battled through 6 meter seas with 40+ knot winds. "If this was in the UK the RNLI would have been here - a sentence we would constantly say to each-other"
    After a sleepless night, we all battled against the odds to rescue this stranded sailor.
    Whoever says that catamarans are not a "seaworthy" "blue-water" sailing vessel needs to watch the video. Coco our Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 done everything we would expect from a seaworthy blue-water sailing boat.
    We are happy everyone is safe. At the end of the day, we are all in this community together, and without each-other, where would we be?
    Thank you ALL for watching our last two videos, we are blown away by the amount of views and supportive comments we have received. We never expected so many people to be invested in the rescue story of the stranded sailor we found on our Atlantic crossing. We have received a lot of questions which may have not been clear in the last two videos so we thought we would do a recap on the situation and what we could have done differently if we were ever to find someone stranded again in the middle of the Atlantic 🙈 hopefully not!!
    Thank you soo much for all your tips on how we could have done things better if there is a next time, we have taken it all onboard and discussed it this week.
    Soo if you would like to join our recap, maybe grab some tea and biscuits and join in with our conversation.
    We hope to see you next week on our less dramatic adventures!! Hope you all have a great Sunday!
    Our goal 10K subs 😁😁 Every little helps, so if you enjoyed this vid. Please drop us a sub.

    Welcome to our Sailing Vlog - Sailing Coco! I can sail and have raced yachts dozens of times. Bottom line guys, you did an amazing job! David could have capsized and gone under at any time. People criticising you would have folded like a chocolate fireguard if they were put in your position. You stepped up and bloody good on you. People are judged by their actions - words are cheap. David was a liability on the water. He actually put you and your family at risk!
    Take care

      @@SailingCoco Wise is the Chocolate lifeguard - for he acts NOT in haste. Let's review what happened and educate future sailors on the dangers of taking certain actions. Should we not offer better/safer alternatives? The next heroic young couple may quite literally "loose their heads" trying to emulate these actions. In my view the professionals (Coasties and towing company personnel on the radio calls) should have been more forthright about the dangers of towing. It would have been the right thing to do. David was either very poorly schooled or very thoughtless regarding his responsibilities as a solo open ocean sailor. I have shared proper towing procedure in another comment on this post not as a criticism but in hopes of preventing a reoccurrence of the same tragedies I've seen throughout my 75 years. They say that there are somewhere between 1 and 10 million boats on the ocean bottom. Most as a result of making the same mistakes the others made and failing to learn from them. Good luck to you both and continue to learn and ask questions - especially during trying times. I'm very happy to see you safe.

    I am flabbergasted that you felt you had to explain yourselves to viewers, explaining why you did what you did. It bought tears to my eyes and made my blood boil all at the same time. You did a fantastic job under difficult circumstances. Be proud of what you did, you are answerable to no-one, least of all people who were not there.
    Btw, I loved the pink PJs. It wouldn't have mattered if you'd been bollock naked, the most important thing was that you had your life jacket on.

    Your boat is not a purpose designed vessel for heavy sea rescue work. As you said it was a huge learning experience for yourselves. Yet you stepped up, managed the situation, especially the risks, and you succeeded. Nothing shouts success like success. It was the right decision to leave him on his boat given the choice to rescue the boat as well as the sailor shown by the need to rejig the lines - multiple transfers between the boats would have resulted in injury for sure. You and crew deserved that award big time. Well done. Umm, the pink jammies were cute...

    Good on you guys. You did it all correct. Leaving David on his boat was the correct thing to do. Towing an uncontrolled boat is very risky for smaller boats. Preventing a tow rope from breaking is worthy of some thought and experimentation, but you have to work with the material you have at hand, so well done. As for using your anchor chain to tow another boat, I wouldn’t do that. Your anchor chain is for the safety of your own boat. To redeploy the anchor chain would put that at risk, so not a thing to do. Use the other boat’s anchor chain, but he didn’t have one if I heard that correctly.

    • @SailingCoco
      @SailingCoco  2 года назад

      Thank you so much. It’s so great to read your comment and think that we made some good decisions at the time. It’s good to hear about the anchor chain as we had never thought about using it before but was advised it a lot since the video! And yes that was correct, he didn’t have an anchor or anchor chain!

    My guess is the line snapping prevented your cleats from ripping out or breaking. I think a drouge off the back of David's boat might have helped some with the snatching, but you did what was possible given the lack of a means to communicate. The cruising community thanks you, even though David did not.

    You've made your goal of 10,000! Good for you. You've proven your seamanship and your humanity with this latest crossing. Now you'll need to navigate the turbulent seas of public opinion. I'm an ol' cowboy from Montana - been on a sailboat once, by accident - so I can't speak to that. I do have a wander lust and sailing channels have satiated that a bit. I follow quite a few. Dellos, LaVagabond (early years), Nahoa, Zatara, Parley, to name a few. All of them at one point or another have dealt with plus and minus of comments. For me, I'm just grateful that you document and invite us along for the ride. Thru you we, the viewers get to see and vicariously experience things and places we are not ever going to get to any other way. I'm a German naval architect and can assure everyone that the cleats and clamps surely must be calculated for such case. At least for the displacement of your own boat plus a safety factor of 2 minimum. Only one thing I'd done differently is the type of line, a braided line typically has not enough stretch to balance the inconsistent pull disturbed by the waves. But if there's no other line that's the way it is. Hope you'll have a towing line onboard from now on sufficient to tow at least your boat. Check out rules of Lloyd's register for example for dimensions of towing lines, you'll be surprised what an fat line is necessary.

    First off may I congratulate you all on the rescue of the French sailor that you did. Please take no notice of the bad comments that you get, they haven't got anything better to do. I was in the Royal Navy for 18 years as a Leading seaman, when we ever did towing of other naval ship we used a hurricane hawser, That is 60 foot of 3inch rope with soft eyes at each end then cable at 30ft and then another length of 3inch of rope with the same eyes. you could make you own Hawser up with say 20ft X 2 inch X 2 with soft eyes in and 20ft of anchor chain in the middle. a shackle for your soft eyes to connect the rope to the cable. Hope you under stand what am getting at. Good luck.

    What a well done recap. It is clear that the decisions you made were well thought out given your knowledge, experience, and the immediacy of the situation. As far as using chain to tow anything on land or sea - beware that if the chain snaps (and it can unfortunately) the recoiling chain is capable of putting a hole through most anything. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together.

    you did the correct thing by NOT USING THE ANCHOR CHAIN in rough seas. the rope snapped because the weight became to much, when using a chain in those condition THE CLEATS would become the weak points and would of ripped out

    • @SailingCoco
      @SailingCoco  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, that's great to know! Would have been much worse if the cleats became the weak points!!

    Amazing job guys. So many would have left the boat behind. When towing you could get the boat being towed to chuck out a stern line with a few knots in it. They will stop his boat surfing down the waves and turning sideways. Anyways in the end you made it and that in itself says you did something right. David may not have known you were trying to hand him over to a more suitable towing vessel the coast guard. In any case the most important thing is you did what makes the world a great place, the good shines bright in some of us. Well done and happy sailing.

    To me, first of all: We, the sailors on this planet, have to say: Thank you for rescue a helpless stranded man on the ocean. This is, we all should have done in this situation.
    And to me, you did a great job. Because he still is alive and no one suffers a serious injury. So I have to say: Well done! - Bravo 👍👍👍👍
    Everything I wrote yesterday, please don't got it as a criticism. I'm for 4 decades captain of a 800 t Trawler. I'm drilled in maneuvering such situations as save as possible.
    Now I know, my hint with the anchor plus chain was a fail, because the damaged vessel don't have one. sorry for that.
    Fair winds to you and your family.

      @SailingCoco  2 года назад +2

      Thanks Kuno!! We didn't take it as criticism at all, we really appreciated it!! We love hearing advice and especially as you have so much experience with it!! The sailor in this circumstance didn't have an anchor but we never knew this was a way we could tow so will definitely give it a try if the similar situation arises in the future!! Thank you again!!! 😊

      @@SailingCoco It will work, pretty well. But even this practice comes to a Limit, if weather will be too bad or waves are too powerful. Nobody will be in the surroundings of a freaking anchor and its chain. 😉

    I think the best learning is doing. You have learned lessons by doing what you thought needed to be done and it worked out, end of story. Would you do everything exactly the same should the situation present itself again, probably not. But then, would any of us be able to say we would after facing such a critical moment in life.
    I have spent time catching up with your sailing adventures, started at the beginning after watching the rescue videos. While you may cringe at it I’ve enjoyed it. You have seen such beautiful places and been through so much side by side. Thanks for sharing your journey.

    DAVID got lucky...I was impressed that you saved his boar as well as for many that is their home and everything you own. You did put your boat at risk but its your boat and your morals... and given experience now and seeing that David made a bunch of money and left the boat you might have not put your boat at risk as if something had gone wrong you would bear the cost when you did not go out to sea unprepared he did. So I guess saving the person and leaving the boat behind is best over risking your boat for his but I still think it was very honorable you risked things to help a stranger. I do think on your end it was brave and kind of you.

    • @SailingCoco
      @SailingCoco  2 года назад

      Yeahh I think we would assess the situation differently next time and maybe not worry about the boat, especially if we had to tow through the night again! But it's hard to know what we would do as I guess it's all circumstantial at the time!

    Pro tip for the heros, when you travel to the tiny islands in the south pacific bring things to give to the islanders because they are so remote its hard for them to get things. Possibly a small gesture of honor for the chief of the island. Some will personally give you a guided tour of their volcano.

    Hello to you both of you and congratulations on your little award you got and recognition for what you did that was awesome you deserve that. As far as any suggestions or ideas I would not know anything I can say that would help I used to be involved in search and rescue in the mountains for some years growing up. But nothing to do on a boat like what you all did I think you handled it very well getting close enough to observe the condition of the guy in the boat and coming up with a plan. If anybody had any negative things to say about it I don't know why because they're not the ones out there and six or eight foot waves going up and down chancing on having a collision with another boat and sinking it's a lot different watching what you did than being out there and actually doing it you cannot just jump in there and do something without making a plan and you handle that very well. And it's good to know that the guy was okay. I can't believe you sold his boat but I guess he had enough of the ocean life LOL. Anyways God bless you both stay safe and healthy. Watching from Roseville California USA. And I have much respect for what you all did take care now.

    You guys did an absolutely marvellous job, your achievement is beyond any criticism! Your actions definitely saved David.. I see his boat is a Dufour 2800. I have the same boat. They are, basically, a family coastal cruiser, very light (the 2800 refers to the weight of the boat in kilos). They are a great little boat, but they are not made for ocean crossing. Also they were all equipped with inboard diesel engines, I wonder what happened to his. Anyway, congratulations on getting across the Atlantic, not being last and towing David to safety.

    Guys, it's a credit to you all for your actions during the crossing!! We are currently in the final four years of saving to enable me and my family to buy our own cat to start our life on the ocean. A question if you don't mind: what do you guys use as a source of income to sustain your lifestyle? we have currently got 3 houses which we rent and I am hoping that will be enough to support us for our new adventure, but if there are any other options which you guys use that could benefit us, it would be met with great appreciation?
    Your videos are perfect the way they are, true and raw, that's is what makes watching them so much fun, Plus educational. We will keep following your journey and maybe one day sail alongside you.

    • @SailingCoco
      @SailingCoco  2 года назад +2

      Hey Mike!! That's great to hear that you and your family are working towards your cat!!
      We started a photography business 9 years ago which is still running with our team (only on weekends since Covid but it suits us more as there is less stresses with being open less) so we both take a small wage from the company each month (just over £1k each) which we try to live on one and save the other for a rainy day. We also have two properties that we rent out. We find that the cost of living on the boat is far less than living in London, especially is you stay at anchor! We tried to make this boat as self sufficient as possible (with the washing machine, water maker & generator) to avoid having to go into marina's regularly unlike our last boat which racked up the bills!
      Happy to answer any other questions if we can help in any way!!
      Good luck with the boat plans and keep in touch! Will be great to see you at sea sometime!!

    • @SailingCoco
      @SailingCoco  2 года назад +1

      Hey Mike!! Been thinking about your question and £2000 a month is definitely more than enough to sustain living comfortably on the boat!! We've been speaking to friends and that is their max monthly budget too. I also remembered our friend has a website with so much great info on this! She and her partner lived on a Lagoon 42 Catamaran for a year and tracked their monthly expenses and it was always under 2000 Euro's! Here's the link if you'd like to look 😊 frompennytomany.com/category/monthly-expenses-all-blogs/
