The Deluxe Reverb is superb if you have the money, available space, a strong back and a choice of pedals. The SCXD is a gem of an amp, Fender did good with that amp. It is so versatile and can give a good tone at low volume. Some folk prefer the amp models and simplicity compared to the later model (SCX2). I mostly use Channel 1 (Clean = Voice 4 Blackface on Channel 2) and Channel 2 Voice 3 (overdriven Tweed), 7 (early Brit Combo ~ Vox type) and 9 (later Brit Stack ~ Marshall). Voice 10, 11 and 12 are also good (Deville etc). The effects are good, favourites Reverb 1 (Room), Reverb 3 (Spring) and Reverb+Delay. Delay 1 (Slapback) and Delay 3 (long delays) are also good. Tremolo is not great, not keen on the other effects (chorus, vibraphone). Some folk say Channel 1 takes pedals well, though I have no need due to the onboard effects (I sometimes use a looper on the input). The SCXD sounds great with single coil, humbucker and P90 PuPs. They can occasionally be found used in great condition for around $266/€234/£200 including an optional 2 way footswitch - which is an outstanding bargain! Popular replacement power tubes are JJ.
Love the comment! Thank you and this is for sure helpful. Have a great day
Most seem to favor the tweed settings.I use the twin# 8 with a JBL k110.I also like the original speaker. This amp is perfect for small club gigging too. It's either this or a deluxe with a weber attenuator. These days I wont even play through a deluxe at home without an attenuator, and that sound may be the only that rivals the super champ for reasonable/low volume playing IMO.
i had the SPXD with lil'buddy speaker yesterday and i can confirm that channel 1 takes pedals so well, the reverb and delay are great too
@@Thomas-wk8vs Yes, I now mostly use my chosen pedals into CH1, and use the built in reverb/delay 👍.
Les Paul special with the 2 P90s is my go to for recording with the Champ( Alnico 10" Jensen and a decent 12AT7) , always with a microphone.
great video. I have a SCXD with a Cajun 10", did a small cabinet with the original speaker, but followed in love for the 64" hand wired... just ordered it.... it's a life time amp..... maybe my grand sons will make some money on it ;-)
:) Thank you for your comment. Much appreciated. Have a great day and Enjoy
I have an XD and a made in 1964 Deluxe Reverb. The latter sounds like magic to my ears, up until the point it starts acting up and has to be taken into the shop.
The twin reverb voice on my super champ (#8 on the dial) is much thicker sounding and is the only one I use.I find that the #4 bassman voice to be much thinner.Comparing an amp with a 12" speaker to one with a 10" speaker, well of course the deluxe sounds fuller.thanks for the video.
Thanks for the input. I will check it out. Have a great day \m/
The super champ take pedals well?
Just to answer the age old question: Can the Super Champ XD be played at home/bedroom levels and still get a good tone - YES. This is a very important point for many people. I find that (in addition to the clean channel and various amp models) voice 7 on this amp (Vox) is very usefuI. As a result, I recently researched the all tube/valve Vox AC10C1 (which sounds fantastic). It surprises me that many people on here say the AC10C1 (10W) is too loud for home use, some have even resorted to installing a Weber attenuator at considerable cost. The SCXD has been designed very well to get a good range of tones at comfortable volumes, plus the ability to connect to an external speaker or an external PA system 👍.
I recently ran it with full band on a large stage. No issues whatsoever using a 1x12 cab. Ran at 7-8. Just right....good power section bloom. Filthy good for my Lap Steel Rig.
We appreciate the input Jeff. Thank you!
The AC10 is awesome, love all it's tones, but more specifically the gain knob just above noon. Volume level is fine, never too loud for home use but I never play late into the night and my neighbor loves hearing some rock n roll sound blowing through his driveway.
Blues Jam report. Ran it at 6 with a small pedalboard infront (SRVish rig). Asked to turn down. ooops....sounded awesome BTW.
A class A amp is always perceivably louder regardless of the watts compared to other types of amps in terms of output tube-circuit class
well it was comparing the modeling on channel two vs the non modeling of the black face. however the champ has channel 1 without any digital modeling just pure tube and that clean tone is very decent.
Correct, they're both solid state/digital. You can pull the pre tube out and still use the direct line out as a test.
love the xcx2, had a 65 deluxe reverb reissue and sold it, too many tubes to deal with too heavy and little x2 sounds a tad better as it is clearer sounding and thats with the stock 10" speaker.
Why wouldn’t you do a princeton vs superchamp? Both 10 inch speakers, also if you turn down the mids knob via fender fuse to 7 (From the default 10!) it’ll sound WAY less boxy. 63 and 65 spring reverb also available via that software and tons of cab simulations too
They were using the older XD not X2. Fuse doesn’t work with XD.
..but good info for those with an X2 though.
I’m pretty sure you have to plug into the second channel on the Deluxe Reverb to get reverb.or tremolo.
Not on the 64. Trem and Reverb on both channels. The footswitch must by plugged in for the Trem to work…
I learned something today... Thank You
It's hard to get the feel and sound of an amp on RUclips. I recently picked up a local used Super Champ XD. It's okay for practice and lower volumes. I do use the SCXD about once a week. I'm not a big fan of the reverb on the SCXD. Even my amps that don't have reverb, I prefer the reverb on my Boss RV-6 pedal plugged into a non-reverb amp over the reverb on the SCXD. My SCXD seems weak on output compared to my other similar wattage amps. I've heard the factory bias is set low on the SCXD's. I've not tried to bias the amp. I paid a little over $200 for the SCXD. I'm sure one would pay well over $2000 for the 64 Deluxe Reverb. I personally prefer a conventional amps with pedals over modeling amps.
the room was really affecting the sound, a few quilts up on mic stands would help
Yeah, mad treble bouncing off the walls. Made 5he Champ sound as good if not better thsn the 6X priced Deluxe.
The better amp overall is obvious but pound for pound I like the champ better. Were u running pedals on the champ? Stock speaker & tubes?
Hi Paul. No pedals, all stock and all good. I agree. It all depends on the budget nowadays.
Thx for reply, it’s 1st on my list
Welcome Paul, great! Quality, versatility, and value for the price. I think you'll be happy with it. Have a great day \m/
@@paulhamrick9092 They can be found used in great condition for a good price. Mine came with the optional Fender footswitch; very useful to select CH1/CH2 and Effect ON/OFF. It also had a matched pair of replacement power tubes by JJ (a popular upgrade) although the stock tubes seem to be good.
great comparison Superchamp by farrrrr! also slightly less expensive
Got you. 😊
You guys are showing yourselves instead of the AMPS I can hardly see the letters anyway just switch the image?.....
You havent dialed in any reverb on the 64 Deluxe Reverb RI because on normal Channel the reverb is disconnected...
Not sure about that. We will check it again. But in any case it's ok because we like how it sounded. The next step is the blind test. If we can really hear the difference
You can be sure! The normal Channel has the reverb out of the circuit.. In fact all Fenders blackface have this feature, either being the reverb or tremolo
ok, Thanks Andre!
I am afraid you're wrong: "Modified from the original design, this modern iteration offers luscious, tube-driven spring reverb and rich, pulsating tremolo effects on both channels." That's what Fender say about their 64 hand wired reissue ;)
@@friedmojo that's why I was kinda confuse when Andre said that there's no reverb. I believe I heard and we were tweaking it. Anyway I really need to check. Haven't have time to check it again. Thanks for the input Ulrich! Much appreciated
The Super Champ XD sounds so much better pushing a 12" alnico speaker. The 10" Fender speaker doesn't do justice to the amp.
Thank you for the input! Much appreciated. Have a great day
Have you ever connected the output to the Fender SC112 speaker cabinet (for use with SCX2 Head)? I think that has a Celestion speaker; I'd be interested in that option.
Absolutely, I built a cabinet with a Jensen P12Q Alnico. Really raspy. I replaced the stock 10" with a Jensen C10Q Ceramic. The 10" is good but the Alnico is amazing
I have the Super Champ X2 head and run it through a well worn in 1X12 cabinet Fender Eminence speaker. The cabinet and speaker used to be a solid state Fender Princeton 65 amp combo from around 1999 or 2000. I merely gutted the old ss amp out which has rendered a very nice seasoned speaker & cab. The tones I get with this improvised rig are VERY TASTY..............
"Here we will test an insanely loud amp without turning it up..." ah guys, come on...
HRD iii for $500AUD or Super Champ X2 for $600AUD?
I already have a Blues Jnr IV modified with Neo Li'l Texas speaker and a few British-type amps (AC15C1, Jet City JCA2OH, HiWatt T20/10 Mk.1, my cab for those is a Bassbreaker 112 w/V-Type) a couple of Laney combos (Cub12r w/Vintage 30, a VC30 210 made in UK w/stock Jensens, VC30 112 clone w/Strauss Vibrolux speaker, basically a 70/80), and a Princeton clone along with two 5W Champ clones. A Fender Bassbreaker 15 combo that i use at home or for DI to desk or interface using Impulse Response Tech.
I've been told an XD or X2 is basically a Deluxe Reverb on the non-modeling channel.
You can get it to sound as good as any Princeton with a decent speaker( alnico jensen P10r and an ECC81 to replace the ecc83 as it makes the 6v6s work a little harder and the "valve" tone becomes more obvious), an Eminence GA 10 sc64 10" speaker makes it really ring.
@@giulioluzzardi7632 cool. Thanks
Good demonstration of tones choices on each amp. Sorry boys but this is NOT a fair comparison of two similar amps. They are not similar at all. Try comparing the deluxe to a 1x12 Princeton or the SC to a Princeton 1x10. Cheers.
We are just showing or comparing what you can get from your money. (price wise)
@@alvindeleon Thank you. I get it. They are both great amps. I have the Super Champ X2 modded with a Celestion 1x10 alnico gold and I love it. You get a Fantastic and flexible amp for half the price or less. I'm thinking about getting a 65 Princeton Reverb and comparing to the Deluxe. These are more similar for comparison sake. I'm simply making a suggestion that might help your viewers. Thanks for the video. Cheers!
@@uptopmikep7065 Sounds like an awesome plan! Thank you Michael! Much appreciated Have a great day. Rock on \m/
Add a 10" alnico jensen or an Eminence GA10 sc64 and an ecc81(12at7) into the little Champ and it will sound even better. Bargain if you csn still find em.
Comparison doesn't make any sense. Why don't you compare the XD to the blues JR or the mustang ? Besides, channel 1 on the XD is the best, not any of the simulated voices.
The comparison DOES make sense: the objective of the exercise is to compare the quality/sound/tones/options of amps in DIFFERENT price ranges to see whether it is worth splashing out big bucks or not. Different people will draw different conclusions. The only inescapable fact which is NOT arguable is that the expensive amp IS a better sounding amp. But is it worth the hundreds of bucks more that they are asking ? In my view ... YES.
Bad test friends, superchamp have great sound. This amplifier is plastic champ 😂
change the speaker for the super champ and the bass sounds will appear
Thanks for the input. \m/
Mine seems to have too much bass
Hand wiring a Fender tube amp is easy as hell, and it pisses me off that they, and Marshall, etc charge as much as they do simply because they're hand wired. Hand wired tube amp circuits are always the simplest designs!
Thank you for the insight Paul. Now I know
5w Great for playing at home, studying, it has 16 voice options without you going deaf, guaranteed fun!
❤️🙏🤟
Really apples and oranges fellas given the speakers are worlds apart. A cheap 10" vs a nice 12" Jensen or Eminence. Put a 10" Celestion in a SuperChamp and it's a killer rig. I am getting a Superchamp head and running through a custom 1x12 cabinet.
Hi Jeff. Been discussing this with Dan and we actually talked about what you just said 😊 hopefully we can try a blind test
@@alvindeleon when u think about the SC is a hot Princeton basically.
@@jefflevesque5316, Thanks! Been using the Super Champ a lot on practice. Super tones coming out of it \m/
@@alvindeleon Yes, some great options on the SCXD. If you do consider carrying out a blind test by connecting to an external speaker, suggest you include all the amp models. You did not demo the ones that I find useful: 3 (heavily overdriven Tweed), 7 (Early Brit Combo aka Vox) and 9 (modern Brit Stack aka JCM800), there are many others. That is a pretty astonishing range of tones from this compact amp! You may have to alter the gain/volume settings to get the best results (I have settled on Gain 7/Volume 3-4 for home use) 👍.
@Jeff Levesque Did you consider/try out the Fender SC112 cabinet (Celestion speaker); what did you think of it? I like the stock speaker (I am used to it - it does what I need). I have plugged into a Jensen C10Q that I have in another amp, but I prefer the brightness of the stock speaker (brings out the crisp Fender cleans). A lot of people change it out for an Eminence Patriot Ragin Cajun, but that seems to dull the Fender clean tone.
Nope!
Cab M...
I don’t get it. Why is the bald guy involved at all ?
Oh , I didn’t realize he’s the other guys probation officer 👮♀️
?
What a joke. You dont even know the 1st channel doesnt have reverb...
