  • Finally, it arrives in the UK!
In this video, we take a good look at the just-released vintage racing buggy from Tamiya, the Egress Black. Can we really justify this price point for this kit or has Tamiya just pushed it too far now.
A massive thank you to Dave at RD Models for helping make this content possible and for getting the kit to me as fast as he could. This kit was purchased at cost and no restrictions have been placed on RCKicks. The opinions in this video are that of my own.

There is a major confusion on this model. The Egress Black Edition, its just like the black edition of the grasshopper, the monster beetle or the lunchbox, just one alternate color scheme.
The Avante Black Special Edition is the anomaly in the range.

I guess the US got lucky this time. In August Tower Hobbies sold the Avante Black for 562.10 and when the Egress Black went up for pre order in Sept it was 404.60. These prices are before their discounts that are typically 40-80 dollars off. Personally I see the Egress black as a bargain as here it is even priced less than the current price of the Top Force Evo. Granted the Top Force does come with an esc and silver can.

I paid $367 for an Egress Black Edition through Tower Hobbies. If I wanted to get a 2013 edition looking online they are at least double that. If you don't already own an Egress the price is pretty cheap.

Gavin, not sure where you're seeing prices but the Avante Black edition is going for at least $150-$200 more than the Egress Black. I picked up an Egress Black for $430...that was the Tower price. Avante black editions are almost $600 (if you can find them)
I know the standard Egress (if you can find one) is going for north of $700. I missed out on the standard Egress so I'm happy I was able to find one at a reasonable price. Although at the price point I do think Tamiya shouldvhave included a motor.

We have gotten a little spoiled , 5 years any Egress would be a big deal. Enjoy it for what it is. It’s an Egress, if missed the boat on the last run this is a win. Dye the wheels, trade out the hicaps and get MCI decals for the sun. The Egress is ICONIC! And the Egress is already hopped up, MAYBE they could’ve added the titanium screws. Nothing else to upgrade the car with.

Bang on, for the money you could buy the Optima Mid, a motor, and some upgrades. Tamiya are money grabbing with this one and it’s a really poor value proposition. Is it new? I think the real issue is the rip off price in the UK. It’s £309 at Tamico in Germany (about £370 after sales tax at 19%) which is £150 less than in the UK. It’s daft that it is cheaper to buy from Germany and have it individually shipped to the UK for less than you can buy it from UK stores (where they have the benefit of bulk shipping). I don’t think many would complain if the UK price was £370. For context the Egress was £269 in 1989 so this was always a premium rate kit from Tamiya.

I have bought some cool stuff for the black ed, I am making a glossy black car with minimal stickers, only silver and white ones. I bought the big bore aireation shocks for it, and some other candy. Just waiting on titanium screws before I start=)
I have the optima mid from before, and finished my javelin in white today. The avante black is a very much less driveable car, if your going to drive it go egress. I upgraded my avante with tourque splitter and hicaps, the egress still drives much better. I need to work on that avante. Great video - ultimately the market will determine the price - whilst I am not a buyer for this model I'm glad it exists - I want Tamiya to be a profitable and successful business so it can keep pumping out these beautiful cars for years to come - some of which I will buy.
Plenty of other greats brands do a similar thing. Using Porsche as an example, it is relatively easy to buy a Macan, but not many will be able to buy a Sport Classic 911 - the 'value' of which is questionable too.

    I own a mk8 golf GTI 21 plate clubsport
it justifies the price increase over a 245 bhp golf GTI
soon as I got it vw then brought a clubsport 45 edition (45 years)
It literally the same car as I have, nothing different, suspension, same bhp
You get 4K exhaust but that’s a option on mine
Basically you’ve paid another 3/5k for 45 badges
They all sold instantly and they are now more to buy used than a new one
What I’m getting at is this black edition will be the same, nowt different just resale imo

Gavin, why does this cost so much in the U.K.? Before a coupon.. the EBE was $404.??.... After said coupon and Tax.. $355.96 or something... So I was surprised , that the EBE is pricey for what is and isn't there... I was more surprised to see the pre-order at such a low price. Compared to the price of the 2013 really release.. another thing that's blowing my mind is that the pre-order for the Hotshot II blockhead edition.. is listed at a price of $214... Which is way cheaper than the re re of the original hot shot... Which costs less than the blockhead wild one but like $35 or something like that... Usually a four-wheel drive car would cost more... In conclusion... While the EBE isn't that special as the avante one... I'm glad I was able to get it for the reduced price that I could.... It's still a beautiful car... But I agree with a lot of what you're saying about it.

No Eggres should cost more than an Avante purely because it's cheaper to produce being mostly plastic.
The fact it has no special motor added is a big slap in the face, maybe Tamiya have looked at the market and realised half of these won't even get built and the other half will just be put on a shelf so why bother adding a motor.
Also Tamiya has such a huge Japanese and Asian Market that they cater to that they price them how they want to. I guess they think we give you so many good cheap budget and medium price kits you won't mind paying more for this as it's mostly collectors buying them.

My Yokomo CAL3 wasn't even that much, and it's a proper racing buggy! The fact that it's a Special Edition, still doesn't warrant the price tag, no special one off parts, (ESC or motor to commemorate it's release), just a black set of wheels and body. I'm sure the collectors that have plenty of cash don't mind, but those of us that try and budget, surely won't justify the spend... Like myself. Tamiya didn't even need to create any extra special tooling to make the kit, as they already have the 2013 model tooling.

Beside that, I got a 1/8 Losi Hammer Rey RTR for less than 400 wich puts a strange taste to the tamiya and kyosho pricing.
