True great poetry, when she says 'you said goodbye'. But then 'could it be that you are stalling... hearts have a way of calling when they've been true...'
Being a fan of Linda Ronstadt introduced me to Kate's music. What a beautiful body of work she has left for us to enjoy. What a pure song with just Kate, her voice and a guitar. RIP dear lady.
OMWOrd! This is SO beautiful, but like a really big sock in the gut b/c of the pain of it! Very candid, and how did she not cry even, because I had to fight not to! What I love is that this woman is remaining very decent about the pain, not destroying with words. That takes courage and forgiveness. Thanks for post.
Beautiful, emotional song. Touches the heart in a very deep and special way. Hard to explain but it moves you. It strikes a nerve. some genuine heartfelt emotion that touches, inspires and stirs the human feelings. It makes me think twice before thinking the grass is greener on the other side. Look at what you've got, what your blessed with, before you casually throw it away for nothing. .
a beautiful woman and song. It happened to me and all of us. It is also a hopeful song with depth people often return to the nest egg, but there is a reason for whatever happens.
Remembering Kate McGarrigle born on February 6, 1946. She was a Canadian folk music singer-songwriter, who wrote and performed as a duo with her sister Anna McGarrigle. @@garysmith1931 Yes, it was Suzzie Roche, but Loudon didn't leave Kate for her. It was a couple of years after the marriage broke up before he got together with Suzzie.
Could anyone help me with this: Joan Baez is supposed to have commented quite UNkind in her biography of 1988 on her cooperation with the McGarrigle Sisters - the book has no Index. Does anyone know the details - the comment or page?

Wow, how powerful,
and Louden deserved it,
what a schmuck.
Great gift by Kate left to music and humanity.
Kate, you will always be truthful, kind, and aware. You sang the song many women lived through.
I was in the audience that night when Kate McGarrigle sang this and it was filmed. It was stunning.

How I loved them back when I was young, wandering around Europe with a cassette tape player and about 10 tapes. This was one of them.
Just simply the best. It’s been fifty years and still heart breaking.
No song has a lovelier middle-eight than this one, building to the gut-wrenching climax of "Here they come, here they come, here come my tear--ears."
I first heard this song over 30 years ago and I still love it as much as I did then. So simple, so heartbreaking.

Probably the most perfect lyric and melody on tragic romantic parting that has yet been written. Godspeed, Kate!
Beautiful lyrics, sung from the heart! So sad that such talent is taken from us too early!
Exquisite....... clear, true. Complete focus and belief...... a perfect moment of music.
There are no words, simply divine
My brother recently died and this reminds me of him. Beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
The wise and brilliant lovely Pointe is in The End: ...hearts have a way of calling... when they've been.. true
such a clever song ,i will always go back to it in my life and it will all become clear
Loved the Sisters since 70s
Oh god how I miss her...

Avery touching and moving performance of a beautiful sad melancholic song so sad about Kate she had so much more to give and live for
What a heart-wrenching song....beautiful production.
A wonderful much missed artist.
Crying now as I listen again ...

Beautiful! I had no idea she had passed away. Another great one is gone. :-(
Just stunning.
Absolute beautiful.

Prachtig. 👍
Me encanta
Same here. Linda's music brought me to them.
magic!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATE! RIP
Wow. Kate was very talented. Only time I saw her was Opera House Belfast when I went to see Martha. Maybe 2009/10 not sure of year.
Correct me if I am wrong - this heart breaking song is about her divorce from equally talented husband Loudon Wainwright. He was alll >> ways on tour.
Yes he went off with one of The Roches of "Going away to Ireland" fame.
@@garysmith1931 Yeah, going closer to his roots... and her's, in a way.

Tribute to Kate McGarrigle (RIP 18 Jan 2011)
Took guts to sing that. Probably therapeutic at the time. Sad for her.
bellissimo
I wonder if this was about Loudon. Heart breaking song.
I believe that it was. Her son has told us that Loudon was the love of her life.
makes me think of my Mom when she had to wish one of her children bon voyage...
my bestone
sweeeeeeet
Beautiful !!!! Does anyone know if it's played in dropped D or open D tuning and where can I find the chords that she is playing ? Thanks
Drop D.
I wish I could get the .pdf from you. Could you say what the tuning is, please?
Makes me think.
It was more often me as a gentle man, saying that to a woman than the opposite.
And now from here?

I wonder what Loudon thinks when he hears this song nowadays?
Anyone know the tuning for this? It appears to be a Drop D ... I would dearly love it if someone would post a "How to Play Go Leave" video!
If you have Gtr Pro 7 or 8 I have done a transcription for this. If not, I can send you a pdf version.

This was sped up, maybe??
Martha looks so much like her mother.
Why do all commentators call her Kate? She looks like Anna. Kate was the smaller one.
Sorry, you''re wrong
Actually Kate was taller than Anna. I met Anna a couple of years ago and even mentioned that to her.
beautiful song - just a slight damper in this performance that she hammers the lower string a bit too much with her thumb.
In taste there is no dispute. I think her guitar playing on this song is exquisite, just perfect.
Well.. for me she added even more poignancy to her song. And grieve...
