I love how sweet and soft spoken both the sisters are.
You can also get a clear sense of both of their personalities…Kate appears to be more outgoing and talkative and Anna appears to be much more shyer, quieter and reserved. They both seem to be quite close to each other.
And from all that I’ve read, this does seem to line up with their personalities in real life.
Martha (Kate’s daughter, also a talented singer songwriter) is looking more and more like her nowadays, and now I believe that Martha is now the age (or close to it) that Kate was here.

The guitar Hiram played that night may have been his finest moment on "Late Night". And look at Kate and Anna. I love how they are both equally pigeon-toed when they are semi-nervously sitting there with Dave. That's some powerful sisterhood genes right there. And Kate dresses *so cute*! Perfect 80's look. RIP Hiram and RIP Kate.

They apparently were born in Montreal or thereabouts, and grew up in Saint-Sauveur , Quebec. If the McGarrigles had indeed lived in Saint John at some point in their lives, then "... they and their parents moved... " BACK to their Quebec origins. Saint John or New Brunswick is not mentioned in either sister's biography.

What other network show (in the US at least) was having on the McGarrigles not just for a song, but also an interview segment?? This is just fantastic. Can't thank you enough for posting it.

If nothing else, I really miss Dave Letterman (on either show) for the great music that he always presented and loved... from The McGarrigles .... to Warren Zevon ...... to Tom Waits, etc.

Weird to see Kate so old here. I used to hang out with her swapping songs and playing guitar with her in 1970-71, Saratoga Springs, so I remember her as being so much younger then, which of course she was. And Anna was still working as a secretary in Montreal. La vie passe si vite!

I much prefer Knopflers playing on this recording. Hiram was a fine guitarist but he wasnt cutting for me here and to me misses the 'Mark'. Will Lee is nailing it even with those counter-intuitive note selections and turnarounds but what else would he do? Thank God for sheet music.
This is a great song that I only discovered because of Don Gillers videos here. My son heard me playing it and thought it was Abba. Then he came over, saw the video and said well its at least one of the girls from Abba. Ha ha.
Ive heard of these two and will listen to more. I have heard of Rufus Wainright and Loudon Wainright III. The family is some kind of musical dynasty.

I prefer Mark Knopfler's guitar on this song as well, but I think Hiram does a wonderful job here, especially considering he probably had never heard the song an hour or two earlier. I dig the little volume knob swells.

Just watched the Get Back doc where in 16 days, the Beatles wrote and recorded an albums worth of songs -- Let it Be album -- with the pressure of cameras on them the whole time. Even rehearsing the songs to record them for the most part in one take -- adding to the challenge. Not to take away from the fabulous McGarrigles -- but they had two weeks with the pressure of cameras on them and couldn't successfully write one song -- which is testament to what the Beatles accomplished with Let it Be.

I don't see any connection between your pro-Beatles speech and this performance by the McGarrigles. I mean, I could talk about Leonard Bernstein working with a Vienna Philharmonic - and it would be just as irrelevant. No offense intended, of course. 🥃🐧

They created so much wonderful music but they don't mesh well with this kind of performance and interview style, and a good interviewer should have known that. Their lack of engagement, and Letterman's lack of curiosity, is unfortunate.
