    From what I’ve learned the N52s water pump and thermostat last WAY longer than the N54/55s. The turbocharged engines run way hotter and still use the same pump. The electric pump can literally not keep up with keeping the engine cool and thus needs replacing every 60k miles vs the N52 which last anywhere from 120k to 140k miles. I plan on changing mine and I’m at 135k mikes but haven’t had any issues yet but preventative maintenance is key with BMWs!

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  2 года назад +4

      If its not broken don't fix it it will not leave you stranded all it will do is put you in limp mode and let you continue to drive without overheating the car. Mines on 179k and still going strong and the water temps are perfect and I can see it all live on the ID4MOTION cluster I'm really shocked to say the least I made it this far still on original but as I'm planning to take this car off the road next month, I will be overhauling the whole car as a whole and I think its about time I do the water pump. The car has served me very very well in 4 years of owning it and 50k miles later since I owned it without any issues so its about time I give it that much extra love

      @@BMWDoctor FCP euro just had a sale on the water pump and thermostat kit! If you planned on doing a water pump they may do another around Christmas time or just after the holidays. Got my thermostat, pump, and coolant for $340 USD out the door. I plan on replacing it next month since I got the parts already but yea typically I wait on maintenance but the parts were on sale so I figured why not!

      I’m at 209k on the same pump. Base n52 is built to last since it’s using peripherals made for more powerful engines. I would say BMW’s N52 engine is in the top 10 most reliable engines of all time. I have less issues with this N52 than I ever did on an Iron Duke, 2JZ, or a K engine.

    I have a 2006 530i with this engine and I do actually need the OEM solenoids, the china ones WILL fail, as I bought the car with bad vanos solenoids, little did I know about the cheep ones out there, or if I did I ignored the naysayers, but alas, you guys were right. I have cleaned my disos and replaced a starter, the tubes in there, and the valve cover (I bought it with a hole in the cover, so I replaced the chain and tensioner, and briefly tried the plastic valve cover, another story lol) metal valve cover now, but other than that, well and a battery, it's been flawless. Sunroof works, radio, nav, computer stuff all works. The only thing is, besides doing Delphi coils, not much in ways of performance I can do. Plus it's pricy, although you can weld up a junkyard diff and have lots of fun, but I think I may sell mine and go another direction sadly, but I do love the motor. If the car wasn't so nice, I'd pull the motor and stuff it in my Miata, but then that engine also it's pretty long. Kinda like my comment lol.

      since you had the 530i your engine is the original n52 and came with the magnesium valve cover right? BMW doctor highly recommends the magnesium one as well, but on the forums i see people complaining about the one time use bolts snapping in the block. Im getting a 328i coupe (i hate the 330i sedans) so no magnesium valve cover comes with it, just plastic, do you think its worth it to convert to magnesium instead? Im probably gonna be replacing the entire valve cover anyways and eventually maybe the intake so just wondering if thats a good idea

    Some valuable info on these engines.
    If your head gasket is leaking from the timing cover check the head bolt visible next to the oil filter housing gasket. It's common these crack from over tightening at the factory and lead you to believe your head is blown. I had a head gasket and head bolts ready to change my head until I ran across this and ended up being a 16 dollar fix instead of a head gasket replacement. This also causes an oil leak that if you don't know, seems like your leaking oil out of your OFHG even though you may have replaced it.

    93k and 12 years on my E89 N52, faultless and i near redline every day.. But do 5k oil changes. OK small amount of oil in plug 4. Changed coils at 80k, but didn't need changing, weren't faulty.
    To be honest never had any engine problems on any cars other than MGTF cyl. gasket.

    Just got home from a nice drive in my N52 E91 about 35 miles with 25mpg when the best I could get before was 21.8mpg. I’m super happy with it right now, I don’t know if it was me cleaning the solenoids (lol I know Doc!), replacing my positive terminal on my battery (long story on that), getting underneath and finding one of the cable connectors by the oil pan dangling off its holder (caused about 7 SES codes about “post CAT lambda, exhaust vanos and exh cam shaft sensor errors), or the high mileage Techron I tossed in the tank but I’m happy it’s driving better and can move on to upgrading my suspension

    I have a question: How serious is the known failure of head bolts in the VANOS area of the head on the N52?
    Mechanics say they find the tops of the smaller bolts frequently enough in the bottom of the oil pan, and it is a known issue. If you have one broken, is it necessary to take VANOS apart to repair or repair immediately? Thanks!
    I love my E60 N52, it has been the most reliable car I have ever owned, other then a dead battery once, it has never left me stranded and is still going strong at 125K miles. Replacing your coils and plugs around 100k will add some peace of mind.

    Got mine at 127000 it has 209k now
    Great car, repairs can be a pain in the ass and there’s always extra steps compared to other cars, but it breaks less frequently it seems. BMW picked good parts vendors for these cars. If it weren’t so expensive to buy the parts, I don’t think I’d ever need to drive anything else again. It does everything I need it to and can drive 200 miles a day in the city without complaining.

    Hi Dr Dean - I’ve been trying to watch all your videos. They’ve be helpful with building the courage to buy a 08 e70 N52 (Canada) 191kms. Is it possible to provide a service internal chart for all those parts? Upon purchase, I replaced the OFH and cooler gaskets, front crankshaft seal, eccentric sensor seal and idler pulley and belts. With a chart I’ll know when to do it again before it becomes an issue. I’m planning to do the ccv line next and possibly the vanos solenoids next. Too cold here now tho

  • @rap_freestyles
    @rap_freestyles 2 года назад

    One thing you forgot Dean is that the metal cover N52 are far more reliable as far as Ccv and gaskets. They have a detached ccv valve that’s 15x larger and fails much less often. The hoses fail before the valve. On a magnesium cover n52 a leaking valve cover gasket is VERY RARE!!! It is probably the valvetronic motor or eccentric shaft seal!

      I can tell you right now mine is straight piped and in no way does the N52 sound like a lambo, you are over exaggerating. The S85 straight piped sounds like a lambo when straight piped as that’s a V10. No straight six will ever sound like a lambo

    Also if you have vanos related codes is more likely blocked vanos solenoids strainers located on the side of the block. Check them first before you spend your money on the solenoids.

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  2 года назад

      If they are blocked that means your solenoids are definitely blocked ! There is no "CHEAP" way out of this engine no matter how much you try. Money needs to be spent to get this engine functional so no cleaning filters is going to work. If they are blocked in the first place that means you have a problem with the vanos system itself.

      @@BMWDoctor Is it good idea to change filters as well as solenoids? I thought i was being clever, bought some after market solenoids and fitted one. Thought good refresh. It ran bad. Don't do it, bite the bullet, buy genuine if you really need to replace. Learnt my lesson.
      I think the solenoid was one of those zebra donkey hi-breeds.

      Exactly my point indeed ! No matter how much I’ve said it in 2 years people will still use the cheap ones I can say it 100,000 times in one video and people still don’t get it. They will try anything to get the cars running as cheap as possible, but that’s why I like this era of BMW as they just won’t let you do that and I’m thankful bmw did that thankfully and they continued it to the F series they only accept genuine or nothing. And of course we will get the people who come saying but what if you can’t afford genuine ? Well then you shouldn’t be owning this car in the first place 🤦‍♂️ the BMW M5 is no different you try stick cheap on it it will punish you and punish you let that be the ultimate phrase as believe me that car likes to punish you if you neglect it, that’s why even on that I haven’t gone cheap. To be fair with you I don’t think I own any BMW that is using cheap parts other then BMW and to be fair where I get it all at trade price which is 60% off the retail value just with my trade number it really does help keep these cars in best shape cheaply aswell.

    hello bmw doctor. I have an engine failure and with the help of several garages I can't figure out what the problem is. the code is P16B7 with the carly adapter. the information I have points to a fuel issue, it could be an injector but I don't see why it isn't continuous then. the malfunction occurs when i ask for power and that is when i have been driving for about 15 minutes. If I drive very slowly, the problem goes away. we have already made an attempt to replace the fuel filter, but there is no filter under the car. it concerns a BMW 130 i cup 2006. can you help me?

    Hey boss, I have the 2008 N52 (Canada spec) with the plastic valve cover. I have changed the gasket (myself) and the oil filter housing gasket, belts, tensioner pulley no problems.
    My ?: crankcase vent is part of the valve cover is that correct??
    When/how do you know when the ccv needs replacement?
    I change oil & filter religiously every year or 5,000km whichever comes first.

      So CCV on yours will be different bro. You have the Y hose therefore usually I would reccomend just to check it for cracks as they usually become brittle over time. Usually people will notice issues with them come the winter and when it’s freezing cold that’s when it usually happens to crack the pipe and of course, you have the CCV in the valve cover so they do like to go BUT, If that is gone just replace whole valve cover. This is partially why bmw changed the design to make it easier but as I always say if your taking the valve cover off the likeliness is your gonna break the hose removing it from the cover anyway, therefore just go ahead replace the hose at the same time as the valve cover.

      I agree ! but let’s face it it’s a headache to overhaul that engine and let’s be clear N52 a baby can work on it’s that easy. M54 is purely no match for the N52 if your a novice as the N52 is literally a easy engine anyone with no skills can jump in enjoy and repair hassle free as everything is just so simple. M54 does sound better though I agree on that no need for backbox delete as the sports exhaust that’s already fitted makes them sound very nice. But still I love the N52 it’s just a passion for me for that engine.

And that’s what many say and they end up in problems big problems hence why my channel is so big. Majority of people on here ended up with problems tinkering with the car thereself and in the end gave up and sold it because i didn’t respond to help them. Unfortauntely it ain’t just about changing parts on this car a lot of computer stuff has to be changed when you change parts on this car. I think if you go through all my comments on the videos you will see how many are in desperate need after playing about with the car themselves and I can’t help them, purely because they made that choice to mess about with something they knew nothing about.

    nissan vq, toyota 2gr, ls and others can claim that title. The n52 is smooth but in my experience is a dog, lacks torque. Complicated engine, relatively efficient, relatively high hp/litre but not the highest. Fun to rev out though, screams to redline, all the power at the top, so characteristic of BMW engines.
