- 1989 VFL Round 9
Richmond 10.17.77
Geelong 32.19.211
24,321 at the MCG
These highlights include Ablett's 14 goals from the game with centre bounces from the start of each quarter edited in showing Ablett playing on the wing.
You can also see Ablett running back towards the wing after kicking most of his goals. It wasn't until during the last quarter that he was stationed in the forward line.
Please note this video has no sound and is as shown on the scoreboard on the day. - Спорт
Only twice have I seen supporters of another team enmasse and genuinely applaud a player on the other side. This game and in the 1989 preliminary final. Same player.
Im a Richmond supporter, was there that day clapped him off the bloke was a freak
My dad and I were at this game, such a small crowd for a brilliant performance.
I still remember he had 9 from the wing at 3/4 time and kicked 5 at full forward in the last quarter.
His last goal we were right behind the kick and it never looked like going through until the wind blew it back.
I was there that day as a Richmond supporter and can confirm that he was playing on the wing, and he was easily the greatest player I've ever seen :) anyone who claims otherwise just never saw the guy in full flight.
Went to Full forward in the last quarter with 5 goals in the last quarter
Can confirm on both counts. Watched in awe many times he made everyone else look like children. Saw him a few times destroy the tiges, and the only player who i was almost barracking to do something superhuman, even against my club. He didn't disappoint. Freak. Greatest player i've ever seen. Easily. His Son wasn't bad either...
@@TheCleaner76 So only nine from a wing. Poor effort.
The crowd is deafening
Back in the day with the billions channel 7 spent on those state of the art graphics, there was no money for sound.
It's scoreboard footage.
Garry Hocking was a beautiful kick with either foot.
between the reserves side -and the seniors ..
geelong kicked 70 goals that day
Let me know when we see this happen again!🤩
Back in the day, the VFL as well as the AFL during the early 90s didn't broadcast all of their games onto TV, only just their major games with the bigger teams or the most anticipated games of the round.
So of course with Richmond struggling and not enough resources in channel 7, this game sadly has no DVD on the Name a Game list from what I am aware of.
Still to have the scoreboard video from the MCG still in tact highlights that there is still some good quality archives being preserved.
Legend of the AFL
🐐
7:08 Tiges winning the hit-outs at half time, getting on top around the ground, and Geelong clearly favoured by the umpires. It's not over!
Was At This Match Watching The Match With A Workmate Another Geelong Supporter! Always Remember An Irate Richmond Supporter In The Crowd Complaining About The Free Kicks To Which A Geelong Supporter Stated "Look It's Not Even Threeb Quarter Time And You're Already 100 Points Behind"!🙂🐱😻🐈🎽🏉🏟️
The umpiring was outrageous though and 134 points was not a fair reflection of the difference between the teams. It was probably more like 20 goals, so the scoreboard flattered the Catters.
10:32 Why spoil the mark when you're frustrated and can just try to knock his head off instead? Ablett doesn't even retaliate, he's used to this kind of bullshit from lesser players.
Does anyone have full game
His nine in the 89 granny was better cause he faced the best in the league not a side who would lose to most reserves side's back in the day
He also kicked 14 against Essendon in 1993 when Paul Salmon kicked 10 and Essendon won.
His 8 from the flank in the 89 prelim was better than all of them.
8:00 Dusty instructional video on how to dismiss pesky would-be tacklers, then just snap the goal from anywhere within 55m no worries. Not sure if Dusty is this good on his non-preferred left foot though.
@J G And you are just a w⚓
His favourite player was Leigh Matthews, who played similar to Dusty. So that’s probably where it came from
Oztiger73 do you have this game in its entirety and/or a copy of the game where he kicked 12 against the tigers in 1990?
Btw love your vids mate
shamrock 11 thanks for the message, I do have the whole game when he kicked 14 will upload at some stage, I don’t think I have the 1990 game, all the best
That would be great if you could, cheers
Hi, do you have highlights of the game from 1990? Thanks.
@@jonburrows9816 I don’t think I do Jon, was looking for it a while ago
there's no sound
Yes, that's how the video tape is. It was a non-televised game, unfortunately no crowd noise on it
This is the scoreboard footage. This is what you saw on the screens, sorry, screen at the ground that's why there's no sound or commentary attached. I can't imagine there's a lot of these left they might have reused the tapes at the ground. I'll go through my Footy Records and see who the other games were between.
@@oztiger73 You can tell it's the scoreboard footage by the race results being up there. Awesome footage.
There that day....about 10000 cats supporters and about 200 tigers including the cheer squad
You can see him taking marks on the lead in the forward line after the centre bounce. Clearly he didn't kick 14 from the wing.
Played wing/half forward for the first 3 quarters, booted 9. Then shifted to full forward in last quarter and kicked 5. Good to see a Hawthorn supporter watching the greatest player in VFL/AFL history.
@@jonburrows9816 The story changes all the time. Without youtube they'd still be insisting he was on the wing the whole time.
@@Whoknowsuknow Nothing to do with YT. I was there in the flesh. Again, you as a Haw fan, "out of everyone", must be ultra impressed to end up here.
@@jonburrows9816 You may have been, but memory is unreliable, and these myths persist without vision.
Wing half forward full forward backline member's 😁 who cares he kicked 14 goal's the man was a freak
