  • Coke Studio Season 9| Season Finale
    Song Name: Rang
    Kalaam of Ameer Khusro
    Music Directed by Shani Arshad
    Produced by Strings
In all its melodramatic glory, and approximately 40 years ago, a shrine echoed with the sound of a traditional qawwali performed in an epic collaboration by the maestros, Ghulam Farid Sabri with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The divine kalaam of Amir Khusro - ‘Rang’ - soared through the skies. In what has been deemed as the most anticipated performance of Coke Studio’s Season 9, the two families return to the platform for the first time since, as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Amjad Sabri collaborate to perform the very track, four decades later.
Recorded in the first and only take, as the song’s melodic heart unfolds Rahat’s vocals float over the top, forging ahead into well-known territories. With the rasp of Sabri’s rumbling vocals fuelled by a momentary key change, combining the sounds of the past and the present whilst igniting the sense of nostalgia most gracefully - carrying you off to somewhere else entirely. Embodying the classic traditional essence, the kalaam comes alive enriched by the raw, soulful inflections warming your heart and soul for many more decades. #CokeStudio9

Born on 23 December 1976, Amjad began learning qawwali music from his father at age nine and joined his father on stage to perform in 1988 at age 12. His father trained him in Raag Bhairon, which is practiced in early morning. For this training Sabri had to get out of bed in the mid night, then after performing tahajjud (a midnight prayer) practised the baja.[4] Sabri presented the work of his family and travelled widely to India, America and Europe where he was known as the "rock star" of qawwali.[5] From then on he remained one of the most acclaimed qawwali singers on the Indian subcontinent and performed around the world.
Sabri's last musical project was with Coke Studio. He performed qawwali, "Aaj Rang Hai" with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in Episode 7 of Season 9. Sabri's performance on the platform came out to be his first and last one

myself Harsh tripathi from Delhi....the song is too good to praise. The Coke studio has surely created magic by two songs, has raised the bar much higher, one is Chhap tilak by Abida parveen and RFAK, and the other is this one, Rang. It is extremely sad that Mr. Amzad Jafri ,the singer of this masterpiece was shot dead in broad daylight.....but it is even heartening that in such hostile environment ,the Pakistani musicians are churning out the numbers like this one. Our Indian film music, except Rahman and Amit trivedi, and Sanjay Bhansali.....everyone is following the wrong line.
I don't care about my compatriots who dislike this song and my comment.
Actually they don't dislike the song, they don't want to show that they like it.

This voice. His voice rises. It resounds in glory. He was glorious. He will remain and we shall fade away. We who open our mouths in anger at each other, others we don't know, whilst his words were of love, for one that he didn't know. Sing louder Amjad Sabri wherever you are, so the thunder of lesser men is drowned by the flight of your soul.

Someone like me, who is a Qawwali enthusiast, will only get lost in trance for this one; besides this one being articulated by Two Legends, the vibration brought tears to my eyes. Additionally, I have never heard Rahat Khan Saab crossing the edge of his honeyed voice, but gladly listening to this way, that is anyway pleasant.
