Hats off to Verel Rodrigues for walking into the bear pit. Does it feel that across several areas of social/economic pressure that people are getting much better at handling the bias of the press - actually willing to challenge them rather than just be shouted down by them?
Well handled, Verel... Why do these presenters always look like they relish the possibility of trashing XR representatives? They ask the most uninformed, bigoted, gotcha questions, so that instead of being allowed to explain the dire predicament, you end up defending Gail for buying food and driving... Maddening.
These presenters at GBNews don't understand what leading by example is. Quite common after 13 years of Tory rule. Respect to all of you who are doing what needs to be done if we are to stand a chance against overwhelming odds. Thank you.
Woman there clearly thinks, that when you start to want to change the system, then magically you obtain the ability to function out of the system and - of course - your diesel car turns into som non-polluting mode of transportation.
Great tackling of the tired old hypocrisy argument. I for one crave a blunter approach taken though. When an interviewer accuses hypocrisy, just say - are we calling for individuals to change their own actions? No. Are we saying people should make the personal choice to drive less or go vegan? No. If you want to, that's great and admirable, but no one is judging you for your personal choices. We're not asking for personal choice change, we're asking for systemic change to help support a society-wide shift. Add incentives and disincentives to move the group behaviour in the right direction, whilst letting people keep their free individual choices. Nuff said, hypocrisy argument falls apart.
His answer to the Chinese question wasn't really sufficient. He tried to dodge the question. If XR is to be taken seriously by the majority of the population, you need to be able to answer those kind of questions directly.
would he have time in that interview? He couldn't really win tbh, the interviewers went at him as if there is no urgency to drasically reduce emissions.
Simple, we lead by example and are the change we want to see in the world. It's the only way to change anything. China has no respect for Human Rights, are we going to do the same just because? I know this is a tricky one, considering our government's legislation and attitude to refugees and foreigners in general, but indulge me. You're on the right track, in the last few interviews I watched I thought it was going well. Just tell them the UK historically is at the front of change and that is what makes it admired all around the globe. Other countries look up to us to show them the way, to lead them, show them how it's done. 😉
@@clive373 As much as I agree with him. The interviewer's responsibility is to cross examine the interviewee, not to push the agenda of the interviewee.
@@anabelaffern Whilst you and I might lead our lives with that kind of philosophy; I think it is drastically ineffective as a way of getting people on board. People need to understand how a change would personally benefit them. It's just not honest to suggest that the world sees us as some kind of climate leader. Your average german, spanyard or Italian either doesn't care or doesn't see the UK as a climate change leader. Taking such a stance only furthers the European belief that the UK *thinks* it is still a cultural superpower. So, whilst I agree that you have to be the change you want to see; I don't think this will help recruit enough people to the cause. We have to be honest with people. The UK will make an absolutely negligible difference to climate change. The pitch should be the benefit of lifestyle changes to the individual such as more wildlife, greener pastures, nicer parks, quieter and cleaner land etc. Perhaps you are more optimistic than me about the ability of people to change without a personally beneficial incentive.
dont take them seriously ; ur loss- from India where even speaking against harmful environmental projects can land you in jail. we want XR to be successful coz its one world - not China , Not India but everyone together in the Global North pushing for systemic change can ONLY help push for change in China and India
These spokespersons should be better prepared for such obvious questions. Everytime anyone speaks of China's emissions they should be reminded that both China and India produce nearly all of the goods that rich countries consume. Consumers/individuals have the most impact on these production emissions through scaling back and consuming less. Neither China nor India can afford to consume all that they produce without revenue from exports. So, which countries are truly responsible for the greatest emissions, both now and historically?

Well as far as I am aware, the message that XR has proclaimed "we are in an ecological and climate emergency," and if you read the published scientific literature being tens of thousands of publications The above statement is correct. Of course that's not to say the World is ending so to speak but a further 1.8 degrees C and possibly beyond by the end of this century, depending on a number of factors. It will indeed have daunting impacts to our species and the rest of life on earth. Will this further warming be doable so to speak, well kinda and kinda not. Depending on which way you look at it.?
