Thank you for this post-surgery video, Tanya! Did you lose any of your up-close vision/nearsightedness after Lasik? I'm considering the procedure and have learned that many people cease to be able to see up close afterward and require reading glasses.
Hi Tanya, it's good to know that you can see clearly now! :-) Many people are very happy with the results of having LASIK, but here are some more bits of info to inform people's decisions about having the procedure done. I discussed it with my optometrist, and he actually talked me out of it. One of the biggest reasons for that is because, as we age, our eyeballs shorten and lose their elasticity. For myopic people (having short-sightedness), this means their vision will improve naturally with age. There aren't a lot of things in life that do that. Several years after that conversation, I noticed a change in my vision. There was in fact a measurable improvement and new prescription lenses. I believe that this process continues because every once in a while, I notice something new coming into focus at a greater distance. Taking this a bit further, suppose you have your eyes corrected to 6/6 or 20/20. Then you become hyperopic (far-sighted) in your later years. You eventually lose the ability to read close-up without correction. My decision between driving and reading my bills without glasses leaned toward the latter, especially because I'd be driving with sunglasses anyway. During my conversation with my optometrist, he mentioned that there are exercises that can reduce mild myopia. But the effect is temporary. And as the eyeballs harden, exercises become less effective. Also, I know someone who had hard contact lenses. it turns out that her lenses re-shaped her eyes over time, causing her myopia (and astigmatism) to improve. It's important to state that, in neither case did our vision improve to perfection without correction. LASIK can give you that. However, it's equally important to state that the results of LASIK may have long-term side-effects that you may not be aware of. One side-effect is long-term degradation of vision, particularly in the direction of hyperopia (far-sightedness).
