I have often wondered if there was a way to wind yarn with a center pull and that's as far as I got. Who knew it could be so easy? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and tips. You have become by go-to for anything knit or crochet. Love watching your tutorials, you make your instructions very clear. Thank you, Chandi! You are truly a bright light! 🌹
I simply adore you’re videos! And your yarns! Everything is exquisite! Great taste in colors, fibers, patterns also wonderful classes, perfect videos. Everything is handled with elegance!! Congrats!!! ,
Very clever and awesome ideas!! I have used my hand to make balls of yarn, but NEVER thought to use my thumb to create a center pull!! Thank you a million times for this. Love your videos!
I just got a swift and ball winder as a birthday gift from my beautiful children, and it is oddly satisfying to wind the center pull balls of yarn!!! 😍😍😍😍
Thank heavens I found this video! I just opened my first package of this wool for the Mysa Wrap...fear and trepidation as I didn't know how to wind it. All good after seeing this THANK YOU!! xx
I tried it today! My thumb is short but it turned out well!😂😂😂😂😂😂 this winter was my first time using hanks so you can imagine how long it took me to un tangle my mess!
Another really great video... Im so happy to have seen BOTH options in a single video! This vid has made me want to purchase a swift and winder.... and as usual, I want every color of yarn you make lol. Also, you are adorable!
Too funny!!! You are fantastic huni!!! You so remind me of me and hen I was as full f life as you are huni!!! Keep the faith and continue to keep the world smiling huni, you are fabulous! X
My husband is going to appreciate the thumb wind method because I somehow create the "BIG HOT MESS" when I try to wind the skein. He can now just relax and hold the yarn. I'm so glad this came up, none of the other knitting/crochet videos ever showed this method. Whew what a life saver "most likely mine".
@@ExpressionFiberArts Update: I received my yarn the other day 😍 My husband was kind enough to hold ghe yarn while I wound the yarn💕💕. They both went great until...I tried to pull the ball enter yarn from the Royal Gray 😭 I dont know what I did wrong because it is a HOT MESS and my hubby is trying to undo it. 🥰 The skein of Cadence went perfectly 😊. Great idea! I never thought of using my thumb. Usually I make round balls which have the annoying habit of rolling around all over the place........getting chased by my cats..... I have just tried your method and it works much better.
Reminded me of the child's rhyme: Little Jack Horner sat in the corner, eating his Christmas pie. He stuck in his thumb and pulled out a plum, and said what a good boy am I. Yep, your thumb to wind the yard which so happens to be shades of plum.
This is a great tip. Thank you very much. I have a yarn Winder but I never had the yarn Swift to hold my Hank. I just ordered one from Amazon. The last Hank I did oh my heavens what a mess I had LOL this is my first time seeing it done on the thumb.

This is great!! I've been trying to find a way to do this by hand for months now. Now I don't have to have my yarn clumps sit in the corner of my room while I sit there and look at them with disgust.
Hi Shandy: I am truly appreciating your videos...and looking forward to even more. You have asked for "requested projects". I am a moderately new knitter....at this point I'm good with washcloths (LOL) and fingerless gloves. I am wanting to make leg warmers for my granddaughters...and would like you to do a video of a pattern for those. Also: is there a way to size such items as fingerless gloves and leg warmers to the different sizes? I've figured out how to make smaller gloves for adult women (smaller needles...fewer cast ons and rows) but it feels like guess work...:-) Thank you again!
Why isn't the yarn sold already in a ball? It seems to me that as many people work with yarn and buy yarn, the companies would just ball it for their customers. I loved the video! No room for that equipment, but love it!
My guess - maybe because most unwinded yarns seem to be handspun/dyed and the makers don't have/don't want to invest in winders? It seems most winded yarns are sold by large companies that spin with machines. Also skeins show off color variations of a yarn better.
I hate yarn barf! :) I saw a video using a toilet paper roll instead of the thumb. I like this method as it leaves a hole in the center where I can put the ball's label and even has room for a swatch if I've made one.
I was at my computer working when I remembered that I needed to go back to Chandi’s video about how to wind a skein…so, before I go do that I open my email and there is an email from Chandi with precisely that video in the content…. Makes me wonder….
I am not looking forward to winding my two recently purchases skeins on the back of a chair. Can we ask for it to be wound into a ball when we order it? Could that be an option when odering- I'd even pay a bit extra. I'm doing the sock KAL so I know I will use one right away!
Hi Kat, thank you for your comment. Chandi is using a Stanwood (www.amazon.com/dp/B0078T6KQY?tag=cropyarnwinder-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1) in this video. It is on the pricier side but an amazing tool. I hope this answers your question. 💕
I have the exact swift and ball winder and was so happy to not be hand winding a center pull ball again...BUT...I have issues now with almost a yarn vomit situation about 1/3 from end of ball. Is this a problem with me not using enough tension when I wind?? All I know is hand winding my center pull balls stayed all together to within a few yards or so. The softer the yarn...the more problems I am having with the ball sort of disintegrating into a mess of loose outside wrapped yarn. I'm thinking of using a rubber band to hold together to see if that helps. Disappointed that the money I spent isn't better than the old fashion hand wound center pull.
Yes, it can definitely be a tension situation. I would make sure the hank of yarn is "tight" against the yarn swift. That will help with the tension of the yarn while you are winding it into a ball. Hope this helps!
I was wondering can you do a tutorial on how to finish the winded yarn spool like you know how you have the center where you pull the yarn out then the other end is on the outside of the spool what do we do with that so its not flying all over the place and unwinding the the ball. Also can you do a tutorial on how to read knitting patterns for sweaters/can you do a sweater tutorial because I want to knit a sweater but I'm not sure how and I don't understand the patterns thanks. Blizzards of love Chanelle
I wish those swifts were really that easy to use. I was not successful - the yarn kept getting stuck on the pieces on the ends. I do love your yarn and patterns. I just wish that the yarn came in center pull cakes.

@@ExpressionFiberArts Haha, I just think I need to be more careful next time. To hand-dye our yarns, they have to be unwound in skein or hank form. We sell such a volume of hand-dyed yarn that we simply don't have the manpower to rewind the yarn into balls before shipping.
