The song tells of a rural Mississippi family's reaction to the news of the suicide of Billie Joe McAllister, a local boy to whom the daughter (and narrator) is connected. The song received widespread attention, leaving its audience intrigued as to what the narrator and Billie Joe threw off the Tallahatchie Bridge. Gentry later clarified that she intended the song to portray the family's indifference to the suicide in what she deemed "a study in unconscious cruelty," while she remarked the object thrown was not relevant to the message.

You are correct, her name is actually spelled Bobbie....Whoever uploaded that video just didn't spell it right. You can't always depend on accurate information to be posted by some of these people that upload videos. It is RUclips after all. Great reaction by the way.

Bobby Gentry is an American singer-songwriter who was one of the first female artists to compose & produce her own material. A lot of her songs were stories. Her biggest hit was in 1967 with "Ode To Billy Joe". Other songs are "Mississippi Delta", "Fancy", "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Sunday Mornin" (with Glen Campbell) etc.

the family is talking about a boys suicide very casually as the eat dinner not realizing the girl was in love with Billy Joe hearing the news that he was dead made her lose her appetite. I don't know if mcobb is the right word to describe the story but it os a great song by a talented artist. I grew up in the delta and jave not been back for a couple of decades and hearing this reminds of how the women all sound there when they talk. I guess i never noticed it before because it was something i had always heard. Loved the reaction as always

The movie is titled "Ode to Billy Joe". It gives one explaination of what happened in the song but people have been trying to read between the lines and come up with answers since the 1960's. Ms. Gentry wrote all of her own songs.

Wow that was a great reaction. Thing is about her, it's pretty strange for that time. She went through college and had at least a bachelor's degree in sociology and yet she was this amazing woman from the coal country with a lot to sing about.
And when you see her doing this, she's also doing a non-trivial strumming pattern with her fingers while she's singing all these incredible phrasing cadences that are way off the beat and definitely counterpoint and fairly difficult what she is singing. She was really amazing.

I wish the "subtitles" weren't there. They detract from the song, for first time listeners. The song is marvelous and stands on its own, with no written interpretation. Her reaction was terrific. Very intelligent and sincerely listening.

This song was released in 1967. Max Baer Jr. who played Jethro on The Beverley Hillbillies directed and produced a movie about the song that was released in 1976. The song also resurfaced in 1976 and became a hit again around the time the movie came out. I remember having to go with my sister to watch that movie in the Summer of 1976 at the local Drive-In Theater that has long been shut down. You neeed to watch the movie. It is as haunting as the song is.

You hit it right on the nose when you picked out how the family was being so nonchalant about this young man's suicide (and not even noticing their own daughter's grief and pain). That was the whole point of the song. Everybody has debated what she and Billie Joe had thrown off the bridge and why Billie Joe jumped when those were just part of the story not the major point.

  • @TheOnespeedbiker
    @TheOnespeedbiker 6 месяцев назад

The movie was just an interpretation capitalizing on the popularity of the song. As mentioned below, BJ described the song as about unconscious cruelty (the parents casually talking about the suicide without realizing the relationship between the daughter and BJM) . She further stated the lyric about her and BJM throwing something off the bridge was simply to demonstrat the two had a close relationship and nothing more along with other lyrics in the song dropping several hints about there being a close relationship/friendship between the two.

I do not know how the movie came to the conclusion it did as to why Billy jumped off the bridge.. I was very surprised at that reasoning… but I guess Bobbie Gentry gave the okay for the writers to take certain liberties with her mystery of the reason why he jumped off the bridge.. i noticed this reaction was posted over a year ago.. if you still haven’t seen the movie.. get ready for a surprise.

From what I understand, people wondered what was thrown off the Tallahatchie bridge, the something they were fighting about on the bridge, and threw over the bridge was a baby, he jumped in after the baby and lost his life, that's what people speculated. The reason she lost her appetite is because the story is hers, his, and the baby, that she tossed.

Listen to the song without watching the video. You'll get a much better idea of what the song is about without the visual distractions. The song was highly controversial when it came out because of the enigmatic verse: "He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge and she and Billy Joe was throwin' somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge." The question everyone wanted to know was what were they throwing off the bridge? And did it have anything to do with why Billy Joe committed suicide? (By the way, the movie was called "Ode to Billy Joe", same as the song title.)

Don't bother with them film.. it only adds confusion to the song. It's about her family completely ignoring the daughter's pain at the loss of her friend and total disregard of the loss of a young man's life.

Is the song in insinuates that there was something going on between Billy Joe
And the singer. Maybe something nefarious. It seems like Bobby lost her appetite. When she heard he died, signaling that she was involved.

The TV film misses the point of this ballad and introduces stupid Hollywood nonsense on a ripoff of this classic rendering. I suggest you don't waste a second of your precious life giving it a viewing. There are better tasks to engage in: weeding, washing the dog, ironing the laundry, serving on jury duty, and going through an IRS audit.😐

This is the worst version of this song to react to because it gives you a bunch of stuff to read, some of which are spoilers, while you should be listening to the words. I can tell you were distracted because this song should leave you more emotionally affected.

In the movie Ode to Billy Joe- Billy and the main girl character in the film are sweet on each other... tragedy comes when Billy gets drunk at a local fair and thinks he is going to partake of prostitutes and no longer be a virgin - however he is so drunk- the local preacher ( a man) takes advantage of him and rapes him... when Billy wakes from his drunk he is horrified and thinks there is something wrong with him, and that he cannot have the girl or live a normal life... he end his life jumping off the bridge. His girl without Billy saying it in so many words figures it out and let's the preacher know she knows his sin..and he'll have to live with that and Billy's death. The item Billy & the girl threw off the bridge was a ragdoll... the girl's ragdoll.. throwing it was a symbol......like lost childhood. Good movie,

The movie is the same as the song, Ode to Billy Joe. It stinks.
Billy Joe deleted himself. It's a fictional tale about "unconscious cruelty," according to Bobbie.
